As it says above really.. how long did you wait until you bought a home? and at what age? or do some people prefer to keep renting? We can't afford a mortgage but it doesn't stop me spending all evening looking on Zoopla :(

I was 23 he was 24. Engaged 2 years. Bought a house in December, decorated and did it up ready to move into after our wedding in the following July.

Didn't live together before we got married.

echt · 23/02/2015 07:16

We were both 40 and had been together about four years.

nooyearnooname · 23/02/2015 07:23

We'd been together 14 weeks when we bought our first house....started looking at houses 6 weeks after we met! Blush. I was 37....

yomellamoHelly · 23/02/2015 07:24

We were 22. Had loved together about 9 months I think - all hazy (less when decided to buy obviously). Been together 3 1/2 years. Weren't allowed to put up any pictures , shelves etc (and make place we were in "home") in the flat we were sharing so felt a bit like student living again. Cost same to buy as to rent only money invested in ourselves rather than someone else - was our thinking.

yomellamoHelly · 23/02/2015 07:25

lived ! Blush

Dontnic · 23/02/2015 07:38

I bought my first house at 24 in 1998 with my partner, now husband, who I had been with for 2 years.

I didn't really need to save as my partner is 7 years older and had the deposit already.

LaLaLaaaa · 23/02/2015 07:39

Both 30, been together 2 years at the time. Now married and 34 and rent!

however · 23/02/2015 07:40

Over 30. We'd known each other about 4 or 5 months. Married about 4 years after that. Still together 16 years later.

Nooyear, sometimes you just know, right?

Roobo · 23/02/2015 07:42

23 and 24, had been together for 4 years. This was 5 years ago.

ArgyMargy · 23/02/2015 07:42

Mid-20's, we'd been married 2 years and were living in my house. Together for 3.5 years. It was 20 years ago.

Cheby · 23/02/2015 07:48

I had just turned 30, DH was 29 but turned 30 2 weeks after we bought it. We had been together 18 months and were engaged. It was a flat in London and we loved it, sold it 3 years later for double the price we paid and moved up north, just bought a family house. There would have been no way we could have got the deposit together to buy at the price we sold it, we were incredibly lucky. The London housing market is ridiculous.

RufusTheReindeer · 23/02/2015 07:51

He had his house at the age of 18

I moved in when we were 21

We are 46 this year

So it was a completely different time, houses are so expensive now

Maths88 · 23/02/2015 07:52

Not sure if we count as still in the process of buying but I'm 26, Dh is 27, we have been together 10 years and married 4 and out first dc is due in September. We've been living together for 5 years renting due to dh only finishing uni a year and a bit ago (did a phd)

RufusTheReindeer · 23/02/2015 07:53

Sorry, I was 17 and we had been together less than a year when he bought it

It was a bit of a family affair and I wasn't allowed any input at the time into which house he bought, we were engaged at the time

SicVitaEst · 23/02/2015 08:04

DH and I were 26, had been renting for 3 years previously. We knew we would get married at some point, but saving for house more important.

bruffin · 23/02/2015 08:05

I had my own flat from the age of 21, met dh at 25 and married at 28 when he moved in. We then bought house together 2 years later.

FunMitFlags · 23/02/2015 08:05

Got together at 21/2. Bought house at 29/30 iirc. Rented several flats and house first, partly to save a deposit and partly just be to be free to move around and enjoy life without many commitments.

KatieScarlettreregged · 23/02/2015 08:10

Got my first mortgage when I was 20, my 2nd when I was 23. Met DH when I was 24, we both sold our places and bought a house together when I was 26. Sold that and bought out current house when I was 36. Buying was cheaper than renting back in the day which is why I had a mortgage on my own so young.

pressone · 23/02/2015 08:25

People commenting about the era
. My first house purchase was 1990, however DS1 (29) bought his first house 4 years ago at age 25, no partner no help from parents. DSS1 (26) bought his first house jointly with his girlfriend 2 years ago. DD (27) wants her own house but "can't afford it" - I suspect 3 foreign holidays a year don't help (talking Jamaica/Maldives not a day trip to Calais)

LegoLady95 · 23/02/2015 08:37

16 months after meeting (aged 27 and 29) we sold our own houses and bought a joint one. 10 years later we are married with 3 children and on our second house together.

Cockadoodledooo · 23/02/2015 08:49

About 18 months. 21 (me) and 23 (him). Completion a week before our wedding day. We were very lucky in that my parents had given us a budget and said use it for the wedding or the house, as you see fit. So we used a chunk of it as a deposit and still had a lovely (smallish) wedding day. Mind you, the 5% deposit was only £2.5k back then! (1998)
We don't own our own home any more (had to move further south for work and couldn't afford to buy in this area), but we're still very much happy together 17 years later.

BMW6 · 23/02/2015 08:56

Dh and I married in 2005 (got together year before). Bought house in 2009, I was 50 and Dh 48. I rented flat from age 24 till house bought.
We were only able to buy house because I took early retirement and used retirement lump sum to put down 40% deposit.

BMW6 · 23/02/2015 08:57

Correction - I was 51 in 2009 (retired 2008)

LarrytheCucumber · 23/02/2015 09:13
  1. We had been married 5 years and only achieved it by moving to a cheaper part of the country (this was 1979).
AnneElliott · 23/02/2015 09:19

I was 20 and DH was 27 although we weren't married then. Been together 2 years and the flat cost only 43k!
