As it says above really.. how long did you wait until you bought a home? and at what age? or do some people prefer to keep renting? We can't afford a mortgage but it doesn't stop me spending all evening looking on Zoopla :(

Bought first house with dh when I was 35 and he was 33. We'd been together 7 years.

Costacoffeeplease · 22/02/2015 20:58

Met DH when I was 19, he was 23, he already had a 3 bed house he'd bought when he was 21! But this was 30 years ago

When we got engaged we sold that house and bought another one together, so I was about 22

Groovee · 22/02/2015 20:59

I was 19, met dh 3 months previously and we bought a new build which we got 8 months after meeting.

shaska · 22/02/2015 20:59

Woah. Everyone bought so young! I was 28, DH 33. We'd been together about three years I think. We only bought because I had an unexpected inheritance from a distant relative, otherwise we never would've been able to afford to (in London).

Five years on I'm still one of very few people in my friend group to own something. Honestly so surprised at the ages posted!

BigFatFurryCatPuss · 22/02/2015 20:59

I was 22, DH (then DP) was 28. We'd been together just over a year then, we've been together 9 years now, married for 6.

myotherusernameisbetter · 22/02/2015 21:00

Well, i bought my first flat just before my 18th birthday. Met OH when I was 28 and on my third flat, he was on his 2nd. We moved into mine for a bit, got married. We bough and moved into "our" house when I was 30 and he was 35.

StayGoldPonyBoy · 22/02/2015 21:00

Rented for two years after already being together for two, and them bought a house when we got married. We could only afford the deposit on our mortgage because we came into some money which paid for that and the wedding. We'd still be renting otherwise, we earn enough to pay the mortgage and live comfortably but couldn't save for a deposit and rent at the same time on the money we are on now

gingerbreadmam · 22/02/2015 21:00

been with dp 3 years (known each other since about 8 yrs old tho) dp was 26 almost 27 and i 29 almost 30 when we moved in together into a rented flat.

sadly cant see us ever being in a position to buy. we both have debt and would need to pay that off really before saving for a deposit and were not in a position to do so at the moment.

i am newly pg and even finding the money to move and an increase in rent is going to be a big hit on us financially. so crap. i work full time and dp does as many hours as he can realistically whilst doing his pgce.

LuluJakey1 · 22/02/2015 21:00

I bought a flat 13 years ago at 22 and DH bought one about 10 years ago. I got some equity in mine and moved to a house 8 years ago then met DH 6 years ago. We sold his flat and used the equity to pay off some of my mortgage when we got married at 30, which was 5 years ago.

We have been lucky with property. We both inherited smallish amounts of money which we have also used towards the mortgage and kept overpaying. We've paid it off and the house has increased in value by 60% despite the property slump after I bought it. It needed some work but we have done it gradually. We know how lucky we are.

myotherusernameisbetter · 22/02/2015 21:01

We've moved twice since but have stayed put for nearly 11 years now - we'll sell up and move as soon as DC finish school.

louwn · 22/02/2015 21:02

25 and we'd been together about 4 years. Got married when we were 28 - always wanted to buy a house first so wouldn't feel guilty about spending money on a wedding! : )

tumbletumble · 22/02/2015 21:03

I was 28, DH was 27, we'd been together 5 years and had just got engaged.

StayGoldPonyBoy · 22/02/2015 21:04

Oh sorry, forgot ages. Rented a student flat at 17 together and got married and moved into 'our' house at 19.

soontobemumofthree · 22/02/2015 21:04

DH bought a house aged 26yrs (100% mortgage!) but we then rented elsewhere until bought together aged 33 and 34 yrs (and 3 DCS) as his house dropped about 25% value and had to pay that off then get a deposit. Work moved so many times too so wouldn't have been practical. No intention of ever moving again.

Sadface1 · 22/02/2015 21:06

So interesting how everyone has different experiences, i'm glad i'm up here rather than London area as at least it feels as though maybe one day we will be able to afford to buy. I'm 20 and DP 21, been together just over 4 years, lived together for 2. DP's mum has a 4 bedroom house to herself (with the dogs) and has offered for us to move back there while we save up which might be a possibility but hate the thought of giving up our independence to move back home :-( would also be an hour further away from work. I think we might get a caravan, we can decorate it how we want then and don't have to pay rent Grin

I was 19 DP was 28. We had been together a year.

pollypocket123 · 22/02/2015 21:09

Aged 31, 2 years ago, married 2 years but together many more before that!

Squitten · 22/02/2015 21:11

I was 26, DH was 32. We had been renting together for 6yrs, been married for a year and our eldest was 1.

We are fortunate that DH is a high earner. Prices are crazy

SpringTimeIsComing · 22/02/2015 21:13

It was a long time ago (27 years) we'd been together 2 years but mortgages were very easy to get and no deposit was needed.

maddening · 22/02/2015 21:15

I was 30, dfiance 33 and we had been together 4 years though never lived together - we worked and lived 40 miles away from each other so moved to half way between when he had learnt to drive.

Archer26 · 22/02/2015 21:15

23, dp was 22. We had been together 5 years. 95% mortgage- we've been here 5 years now and just seen the repayments drop for the first time. Phew.

Latara · 22/02/2015 21:16

I was age 30 and single when I bought my house. I'm now 38 & currently single, living in the same house.

pressone · 22/02/2015 21:17

Age 23 been married a year together 5 years joint mortgage but my deposit (and I paid off his ccjs to get him on the mortgage).
Age 29 bought house on my own (who didn't see that coming!) although living with the man who was going to be DH2 for 3 years
Age 33 bought house with DH2
Age 43 bought house on my own (very amicable divorce xDH2 helped me decorate!)

devilinme · 22/02/2015 21:17

I inherited a house in London. I have never actually bought a house. I've sold this one and exchange tomorrow with DP on dream house. We have been together 5 years.

We don't have a mortgage.

I am very lucky and under 50.

DextersMistress · 22/02/2015 21:19

I'm 30, dp in his 40's and we've just been accepted for a mortgage so hopefully within the next few months. We've been together 8 years.
