As it says above really.. how long did you wait until you bought a home? and at what age? or do some people prefer to keep renting? We can't afford a mortgage but it doesn't stop me spending all evening looking on Zoopla :(

18 months from meeting to buying house at 27 and 34.

CliveCussler · 22/02/2015 20:40

I was 23 and single-ish. Took in a lodger-friend to help pay the mortgage and used to cycle everywhere and got fed at work.

Stinkersmum · 22/02/2015 20:40

We had our own places before we met. We're selling his and buying another together and keeping mine as pension etc. Mine is in Spain, his is in the UK. Works for me!

Peepants78 · 22/02/2015 20:43

20 and 21, together for 11 months

Badgerwife · 22/02/2015 20:43

i've been with DH 6 years, we're completing on our first house this week. I'm 35, he's 40. The only reason we can afford to buy is with the part-buy/part-rent thing and we can only afford 35%. prices down south are ridiculous and we just can't afford the repayments on a whole mortgage despite having a decent deposit.

Peepants78 · 22/02/2015 20:44

Rented together for 7 months first

BreeVDKamp · 22/02/2015 20:45

I was 23, DH 25, or just turning 26. That was a flat though, in London so that was all the space we could afford. That was 2 years ago. I know we are crazily lucky!

BreeVDKamp · 22/02/2015 20:45

Oh sorry, been together 5 years ish, married 1 year.

AryaUnderfoot · 22/02/2015 20:46

I moved in with DH before we were 'together'; I rented a room in his house.

I was 18 and he was 19 (a long time ago).

We bought our first house 'together' in 1997 when I was 22 and we had been married for 6 months (together for 2.5 years).

MrsTedCrilly · 22/02/2015 20:46

We were 25 (4 years ago) but only possible because;
One bed flat was only £53,000,
Parents helped with deposit,
Partner worked for Halifax so got low interest mortgage.

Monthly payments were £147 and now £275 as he doesn't work for Halifax anymore. So quite small scale but very affordable, feel very grateful to have our own home. Without the factors above there is no way we'd be in this position!

I hope you have your own paradise in the not too distant future Smile

ScotsWhaHae · 22/02/2015 20:47

21, ten years ago. We'd been together 3years

anothernumberone · 22/02/2015 20:47

1.5 years, married and with a baby well on the way, we were fast movers Grin.

MrsTedCrilly · 22/02/2015 20:48

Oh and we'd been together 3 years.

WiggleGinger · 22/02/2015 20:50

I was 21 DH (DP at the time) was 24 we had been together a year, this was 11 years ago and the mortgage payments were cheaper than rent. Made perfect sense!

FortyFacedFuckers · 22/02/2015 20:50

I was 20 & we had been together 2.5 years still in the same house 9 years later but the house prices have actually fell here since we bought this and would lose around £15000 if we sold and we just can't afford to lose that.

Chessie00 · 22/02/2015 20:51

We'd been together for 2 years 1 month when we bought our house...I was 19, dh was 23.

We'd lived together in rented for 18 months before buying.

2rebecca · 22/02/2015 20:53

I bought a small house before I met my first husband. House prices were relatively cheaper then as I could afford a house in my mid 20s but it was a cheap part of the UK as well.

Electriclaundryland · 22/02/2015 20:53

Bought my own flat at 24. Had been with dp for a couple of years but we didn't live together.

HollyBdenum · 22/02/2015 20:53
  1. We'd been together for 6 years and been living together in a rented house for one year. House price increases mean we're still in that house 14 years later, so I'm glad we chose a good one.
daughterofliz · 22/02/2015 20:54

We bought a flat when we had been together 3 years and married nearly 2, I was 25, he was nearly 25. We bought an actual house about 6 years later.

lostmymarblesbutfoundthewine · 22/02/2015 20:54

2 years and 19 when we brought out house. seems so young now!!

FluffyMcnuffy · 22/02/2015 20:55

22 and together 2 years.

MsVanRein · 22/02/2015 20:55

24, together 5 and a half years. Had lived together on and off before in rented apartment and in my parents house.

Permanentlyexhausted · 22/02/2015 20:57

I was 24 and single. Didn't meet DH for another 4 years, and it was another 4 years before we bought a house together.

Chessie00 · 22/02/2015 20:57

Lostmymarbles, I agree.

My youngest sister is 16 now, only a year off my age when I got together with DH.

If she told me in a couple of years she was looking for a house to buy with a bf of two years I'd be horrified...it's so young double standards
