As it says above really.. how long did you wait until you bought a home? and at what age? or do some people prefer to keep renting? We can't afford a mortgage but it doesn't stop me spending all evening looking on Zoopla :(

Both early twenties, had been together just over three years.

It wasn't regarded as a very rock 'n' roll move, but it worked out well because, where we live, we'd have been fucked if we'd waited

Postchildrenpregranny · 22/02/2015 21:21

Am amazed how young people were!
Bought on my own aged 29, as I moved area . Had been renting for 6 years and don't think landlady had ever put it up. Was as cheap to buy as to rent but I had 100%mortgage (3x salary I think) at 18%. Tiny new- build two up two down . I got my survey, legal and removal costs paid by employer . Mortgage was crippling but I sold a £12,500 house 2 years later for £15,500
DH had bought, aged about 25, with ex wife . They'd moved at least twice . He bought her out when they split up (before we met) . Doubled his mortgage from £14,000 to £28,000. As they'd had the house only 3months I didn't really mind moving in when we got married 2years after we met . (we didnt officially lived together was we lived about 50 miles apart) It was a lovely, 3 bed detached house, (nicer than present one) and we did a lot to it with the proceeds from mine, but in 'wrong' school catchment area ,so we moved 5.5 years later (when DD1 was 2)to our present, 4 bed house .Have been here nearly 28 years but now looking to downsize
DD1 (29) hopes to buy in London this year but will need our help . (Attached but not buying with partner) DD2 (25, unattached) hopes to buy in Manchester: should just about manage it .

I bought my first house at 23. DH was renting when I met him - sharing with friends. We bought our first house together when I was 27 and he was 29, 18 months after getting together, 3 weeks before we got married.

westcountrywoman · 22/02/2015 21:24

We were 25 and had been together 7 years. Prior to buying our flat, we'd been in student accommodation for 4 years together then travelled for a year and when we came back to the UK we house-shared with other young professionals for a year. So never rented a whole house / flat.

MagpieCursedTea · 22/02/2015 21:24

We were 26 and engaged (married the following year). We'd been together about 3 years but known each other for 10.

TheOddity · 22/02/2015 21:29

24 and 6 months. I was nuts but it all worked out!

Hadook · 22/02/2015 21:50

Bought my house when I was 24, met DH when I was 28.

MrsBungle · 22/02/2015 21:54

Dh and me bought our first house together when I was 26 and he was 34. We'd been together 4 months and had just got engaged! Still going strong 10 years later!

namelessposter · 22/02/2015 21:54

3yrs, both aged 30. We both also owned other houses (and kept them when buying together)

Doilooklikeatourist · 22/02/2015 21:55

I bought my own house before I met my DH
He had his own place too ,we bought together when DS s about 1 ( he's nearly 20 now )

WorraLiberty · 22/02/2015 21:58

I was 25 and bought my house on my own

Luckily I managed to keep it completely after the divorce.

MsRinky · 22/02/2015 21:58

28, six months before we got married. We'd been together 9 years, we rented together for nearly five years, working our way up from slum bedsits to a smart new build semi rental before we bought. Was before prices went mental though.

madamginger · 22/02/2015 22:02

22 and we'd been together 3 years first and rented for a year. We got married at 25, we sold that that house 3 years ago, aged 31, and it had doubled in value Shock

BackforGood · 22/02/2015 22:02

I was 25 when I bought my first home.
Didn't know dh then.
Our first home together was completed just before I was 32. - we'd been married just over 2 yrs then, known each other for 5.

LittleprincessinGOLDrocks · 22/02/2015 22:11

I was 19 and at university. It worked out cheaper to buy our 3 bed terrace than to rent in student digs, once DH put his share of money in, so seemed a good idea. It was, still live there now 11 years on.
We had been together 4 years at that point, now married with 2 children.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 22/02/2015 22:15

29 and 36 married 6 months, together 8 years.

brimfullofasha · 22/02/2015 22:17

We were both 26 and had been together almost 3 years and lived together in his flat for a year.

ButterflyUpSoHigh · 22/02/2015 22:18

Age 21 been together 18 months. He already half owned a house with his brother though. Still in the same house 17 years later now with 2 Dc's.

GlowWine · 22/02/2015 22:18

We were about 26, been renting together for 5 and been together for several years before. We still live here now, in the same house, and have gotten married + kids. totally irrelevant

We were 32 and 33 when we bought our first home, had been together 5 years and married for 3 months. This was a couple of years ago and in London, so we saved hard for a deposit. We were renting separate shared flats before then and were keen to marry and buy a place quickly, but had various visa/work things which needed to fall into place before it happened.

FiloFunky · 22/02/2015 22:21

i was 27 dp 28. first viewed the house 4 months after getting together. got the keys 12 weeks later!

MrsKoala · 22/02/2015 22:22

We have just bought our first property together. Have been together about 6yrs, married 2. Have 2 dc under 3. I was 37 and he was 34. However, we both owned property before we met (mine was a flat with my exH and DH a house which he had just got a mortgage for but not yet moved into when we met - we rent out his little cottage as it's too small for all of us)

DramaAlpaca · 22/02/2015 22:23

I was 25, he was 27. We'd been together a couple of years and got married the year after we bought the house.

shitebag · 22/02/2015 22:27

We're in our late 20's, been together 14 years and still rent HA property and have no plans to buy as unless we have a drastic lottery win we can't afford too.
