As it says above really.. how long did you wait until you bought a home? and at what age? or do some people prefer to keep renting? We can't afford a mortgage but it doesn't stop me spending all evening looking on Zoopla :(

We were 23 & 26 and we'd been together for about 4.5 yrs. Married later that year. We had been renting together for a couple of years, but were keen to buy. DH inherited £5k & that was enough to get onto the housing ladder in a slightly seedy bit of London, back in 1998.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 22/02/2015 22:32

We got together at 18, worked and lived together (residential job)for two years at 21&22, moved in with my parents for a year after that and bought our home at 24. We are now six years and two dcs later and starting to think about selling and upsizing.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 22/02/2015 22:34

I was 20 when I bought my first property with my boyfriend of 2 years. 100% mortgage at an interest rate of 15% and negative equity almost immediately! I was mad. We split up after two years.

Met DH and we bought our first house together after three years ( three months before our wedding)

BuggersMuddle · 22/02/2015 22:42

DP and I had been together for just over 2 years when we bought a house. I was 24.

Prior to that we both owned flats.

Dowser · 22/02/2015 22:54

I was 23 and he was 21. Took possession of it 4 months before wedding. It cost £7950.

It was brand new and all painted white. Spent all summer painting it and charting it up with horrible 70 s wall paper.

When he moved out in 2006 or 7 I spent a year ( the house was much bigger then) turning it all back to white...and that's how it is staying.

Charlotte3333 · 22/02/2015 22:56

I was 23 when I bought my first house and met DH when I was 26, moved in together a year later and both put 50/50 into the new house. We live in Warwickshire, though, so prices are pretty reasonable, and my Dad helped me put down a deposit on my first place or I'd never have been able to buy.

SASASI · 22/02/2015 23:00

I was 25, he was 26 & we were together a year & a half when we bought our first house. but we were friends for a few years before getting together.

Momagain1 · 22/02/2015 23:09

I was 37 and he was 35, we had been married 12 years. Income and savings and the stars finally aligned.

notnaice · 22/02/2015 23:10

Bought my own house at 22 and had lodgers. Bought a different house where I lived on my own when I was 28. DP moved in when I was 31 and rented out his. Bought house together at 33 after we'd been together 2.5 years.

cherrylola · 22/02/2015 23:10

I was 28 DP was 30, and we were pregnant with DC 1 ;)
Had been together 6 years, not married and had been renting before. Came into enough money for a deposit or else we would still be renting now. I wouldn't care but DP would. Owning a home for us and his child is important to him. However, I do love the fact that I can absolutely do whatever the bloody hell I want to my home, decorating etc and don't have to wait for useless landlords to fix things when they go wrong!

Momagain1 · 22/02/2015 23:12

Seems like what era this was in mattered too.

So, 37 and 35, married 12 years, and purchased 12 years ago.

IdaClair · 22/02/2015 23:15

Was 21 and had been together 3 years.

SwirlyThingAlert · 22/02/2015 23:18

Got together when I was 18, bought our house when I was 23. First time we'd bought a house for both of us.

IdaClair · 22/02/2015 23:18

oh, seeing it matters when it was. It was ten years ago. We took out a 95% mortgage, having saved the deposit over the previous three years of renting.

mimishimmi · 22/02/2015 23:21

I was 30, DH was 33. We had been together 11 years, married for 7.

TiffanyAtBreakfast · 22/02/2015 23:24

Rented first for a year or so, then moved into a shared ownership. After another year we got engaged, and then married. A year into marriage we bought a house, and we've been here for six months. We're 27 and 28.

TiffanyAtBreakfast · 22/02/2015 23:27

Sorry so we'd been together for four years in total before buying a house if you don't count shared ownership.

Lamourestbleu · 22/02/2015 23:29

I bought my first house (a condo) myself at age 27, dh and I never lived together before marriage. When we got married I sold it and we bought a house together. We're on number house number five right now.

TiggieBoo · 22/02/2015 23:34

We were 28/24, married for 1 year, together about 3.

LadyKooKoo · 23/02/2015 00:11

Bought my first house at 20. Bought with DP when I was 26 and we had been together a year. I am now 34, we have been married 6 years and have 2 DDs.

DinosaursStillExist · 23/02/2015 00:46

I was 24/DP was 32 - he'd never owned prior due to renting with exW.
We'd been together 2 years, engaged 1 year. Lived in a VVV small flat together prior to buying.

DinosaursStillExist · 23/02/2015 00:48

This was approx 18 months ago with a 15% deposit mostly funded by me

Annabannbobanna · 23/02/2015 00:55

I was 23, we had been together 2 years and I was 6 months pregnant. We had both just started our first jobs after university and this was central London, wouldn't happen now.

zazzie · 23/02/2015 05:53

I was 27, we had been together for 2.5 years and renting for 6 months. That was 17 years ago and we sold it for 3 times what it cost to buy it, 8 years later. Our second and current house is still worth the same value it was when we bought it.

Amy106 · 23/02/2015 06:25

I was 25, he was 26. Married for four years first.
