to find my BIL's declaration of love for my sister annoying and awkward?

For example we all had dinner at my mothers on Friday evening. We'll be having a conversation, and then he'll just come out with "god I love you" randomly in the middle of the conversation.

He does this quite a lot.

They have been married 7 years so not really in the honeymoon phase.

Of course I'm happy that me sister found someone who clearly adores and loves her but I don't think during group conversations you have to randomly interject with declarations of love for your partner.

Number3... for some of us, I guess, the clue is in the word 'private'. What a leap to 'jealousy', it's just laughable.

Only people who need an audience do as OP's BIL does. Perhaps he's waiting for a round of applause/

I personally think that covert glances and little smiles say so much more. It's private and I'm not interested in sharing with anybody else.

Horses for courses.

I'm quite happy for OH to tell me he loves me in public.

Lying you said 'I too wondered if he needs to do this to compensate for something?'

So he must be up to something because he says publicly he loves her?

Now that's a leap.

alxjames · 23/02/2015 14:33

I'm quite happy for OH to tell me he loves me in public.

I don't think anyone is against this.

There's a heap of difference between doing that and interrupting a normal conversation sounding turned on.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 23/02/2015 14:34

Why else would he do it? Why the need to involve other people and interrupt conversations to do it? It is pathetic, there's no other word for it.

My husband tells me he loves me too - quietly, without involving other people in the conversation; I wouldn't find it endearing at all to have some kind of attention-seeking ring-master type, who has to show off.

Like it or not, many people (certainly me) think that such antics are needed by those who have to publicly demonstrate and 'prove' their love for some reason. They don't care a jot for other people's weak stomachs... why not just stay at home, sit next to each other and type this tripe on FB, that's the place for it.

Number3cometome · 23/02/2015 14:34

Just ignore it?

If he is attention seeking he will soon stop.

SirChenjin · 23/02/2015 15:04

The OP doesn't give the impression that they've been doing anything other than ignoring it - unless I've missed that post? Ignoring it doesn't seem to have worked so far - probably because he's too much in love to care Grin

Number3cometome · 23/02/2015 15:14

Just don't go out with them?!

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 23/02/2015 15:33

Did she create him in a lab? choob

DinosAteMyFamily · 23/02/2015 17:13

Maybe he doesn't realise he's talking out loud?

It's the only plausible explanation for such a repugnant display. Go down the behaviourist route; stab him with a fork whenever he decides to share his feelings in inappropriate company.

feelings. Urgh.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 23/02/2015 23:31

Yes stab him with a fork. Failing that, scoop your own eyeballs out with a teaspoon. Saves witnessing such behaviour. Grin

DrankSangriaInThePark · 24/02/2015 08:52

People that don't tell you they love you usually love you a lot more than the people who tell you they love you love you.

OP- could you PM me his name? Grin My dear friend had a boyfriend that used to do that. We'd all be sitting in our university room, necking cheap cider before going out....there'd be about 15-20 of us, and there they'd sit, across the room from each other, and he'd be going "I love you" and she'd go "me too" and the rest of us would spontaneously projectile vomit.

StackladysMorphicResonator · 24/02/2015 10:41

What Lois said. The only option.
