to find my BIL's declaration of love for my sister annoying and awkward?

For example we all had dinner at my mothers on Friday evening. We'll be having a conversation, and then he'll just come out with "god I love you" randomly in the middle of the conversation.

He does this quite a lot.

They have been married 7 years so not really in the honeymoon phase.

Of course I'm happy that me sister found someone who clearly adores and loves her but I don't think during group conversations you have to randomly interject with declarations of love for your partner.

Grin at balia and mrsmin
Op whenever he speaks could you not say 'gawd you,re funny' and see if he picks up on your sarcasm and how annoying these statements are.
Hmm wonder if he says it to your sister in private too or if its all for show.

carabos · 22/02/2015 21:48

Don't people normally just do this with a look? At least people in a ltr? Sometimes in company you just sort of float above the conversation and if your loved one catches you doing it, they give you that look. They don't need to say it aloud.

PiranhaBrothers · 22/02/2015 21:51

I thought it was quite sweet until you said the in a turned on way? bit of it. That's a bit creepy.

I assumed it was the 'wife says something funny/geeky etc.' and he says it without really thinking.

ARoomWithoutAView · 22/02/2015 21:55

I think it depends how it was done. With the intention of making him look good. Or is he free spirited enough to let his feelings out when he is touched, in which case no problem. You are certain of curse that we wasn't talking about the Wall's sausages.......

Daryldixonswife · 22/02/2015 21:56

I assumed it was the 'wife says something funny/geeky etc.' and he says it without really thinking.

No, sadly not.

Its like -

  • Weather was nice today
  • Yeah it was, should be good all week
  • Great, means I can leave my washing out to dry
  • God I love you!

(The conversation are never that dull Wink but you get the idea)

Ah...... then it was definitely the sausages

NoArmaniNoPunani · 22/02/2015 21:58

Play them at their own game, you can get into a gross out Olympics. Next time he does it wait for the perfect moment to say 'Christ I want some Bumsex tonight'. The possibilities are endless.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 22/02/2015 21:58

Urgh... you are most definitely NOT being unreasonable, Daryl. He, on the other hand, is being an obnoxious and self-absorbed arse to do this in company. Your sister has a very strong and settled stomach and zero gag-reflex, obviously.

gamerchick · 22/02/2015 21:59

My husband does this to me but not interrupting conversation. I don't mind or find it nauseating.

I'm well chuckling at some of the assumptions on this thread though Grin

i felt cringed out just reading the original post, puke making or what ? who in their right mind could feel jealous ?

Alisvolatpropiis · 22/02/2015 22:33

Yanbu. It is weird.

I'd find it very, very difficult not to snort with laughter initially.

However as time went on I imagine I'd find it very, very difficult not to stab him.

Once you notice things, they become annoying and you notice annoying things more.

Have you ever asked your sister about it? Is it in line with his general personality? Is it said loudly or quietly?

Shodan · 22/02/2015 22:42

I would be happy if my BIL and SIL kept it to an utterance of love.

As it is, their way of expressing their fascination for each other includes full-on snogging, his hands inside the back of her trousers; her sitting on his lap and nuzzling his neck and other PDAs.

All while we all find the carpet/ceiling/bookcase terribly, terribly interesting Grin

mrsfuzzy · 22/02/2015 23:53

shodan that is just too full on, how old are these people ? certainly not jealous but this does sound a bit immature, ever tried a bucket of cold water over them ?

Chessie00 · 22/02/2015 23:56

So he doesn't say your sisters name? Maybe it's directed at you?

[snort] Grin

balia · 23/02/2015 00:00

So I asked DH - he said it was because grouting is a 'fairly boring job'. He is a classic romantic, I feel.

Anyway, maybe OP's BIL is just very religious? I think a fervent 'Amen' is the correct response.

GiddyOnZackHunt · 23/02/2015 00:07

If it's a response ironically or sweetly to something in the "This is why I married you" sense then OK.
If it's a random "I want to fuck you" thing then no, that's icky.

SirChenjin · 23/02/2015 07:56

Just say to your sis, each time, passionately, 'YES, I love you too' and then look pointedly at everyone else there as though expecting them to follow up

^ Yes, this - do this. Brilliant!!! Grin

Eminado · 23/02/2015 08:04

Balia i think i love your husband Grin

PoppyAmex · 23/02/2015 08:04

British people crack me up, they really do! Grin

The list of things you find "embarrassing", "mortifying" and "cringing" is hysterical.

RestingFuckFace · 23/02/2015 08:29

Oh god if my brother did this to SIL, Id cringe my rear end off.

They have been together for about the same amount of time, it would make me want to hurl!!

I adore them though, mainly because they don't do shit like that Wink.

RitaOrange · 23/02/2015 08:44

Maybe there is a mirror behind her head and he can see himself...Grin

Seriously he sounds like a twat .

He is trying to convince someone , probably himself.

HellKitty · 23/02/2015 08:46

I've sat between DP and future mil before and had to listen while they both discussed how much they love me. I cringed but it's natural for them. My family were all very 'proper' and never uttered the 'L' word. Just agree like the other poster said or go random like Anchorman -
'I love you so much'
'I love lamp'
