to think UKIP can no longer deny being racist

We keep hearing about all these UKIP members and supporters in the news for their racist speech and articles.
Farage says he doesn't want racists in his party, but there is the photo of him drinking and grinning with one of the Chelsea mob who were filmed in Paris.
Apparently there will be more on the TV tonight.
It's time that all sensible people spoke out against these hateful characters.

I believe that photo was taken before the Paris incident. How was Farage to know the man would go on and do what he did?

UKIP are a party that wants to get us out of Europe, which can only be good for the UK. They want to control, not stop, immigration, that can only be positive for the UK.

KeemaNaanAndCurryOn · 22/02/2015 12:13

Babashka - UKIP have policies that are racist, sexist and homophobic.

If you're ok with racism and don't approve of gay marriage, then how about stuff like....Things like, you know, getting rid of women's maternity rights, the statutory 4 weeks paid leave a year, that kind of thing.

KeemaNaanAndCurryOn · 22/02/2015 12:22

Or just a bit stupid?

KeemaNaanAndCurryOn · 22/02/2015 12:24

But don't worry if we misunderstood what she said about that.

She's racist as well. www.theguardian.com/politics/2013/dec/08/ukip-victoria-ayling-immigration-nigel-farage. Phew!

Chertsey · 22/02/2015 12:42

I think there's lots to dislike about them and they undoubtedly attract racist voters, but TBF they have expelled members who've said openly racist things.

I'm really worried they're going to get in round here and TBH the more racist they are seen to be the more likely that is to happen. The other parties were way too late to realise that immigration is a big problem for poor people, who see their housing, work and schooling opportunities damaged by it.

Personally, I'm a proper leftie, who abhors all things UKIP, but I can see why they appeal to people who feel the main parties have abandoned them.

TheFecklessFairy · 22/02/2015 12:46

That photo was taken looooooooong before the incident in Paris. The far Right is gaining power across Europe from what I can gather. It will happen here, too.

Sallyingforth · 22/02/2015 12:49

Babashka - yes the photo was taken before.
But so what? It shows the sort of person that Farage associates with. They were clearly very comfortable together.

I think we all need to remember these people grew up in a time where racism was acceptable. It's hard to change your conception of the world from one you have known since you were small.

Dawndonnaagain · 22/02/2015 14:21

FreeSpirit I am 56 years old. I was brought up in the belief that racism was unacceptable. Age is not an excuse for prejudice.

richthegreatcornholio · 22/02/2015 14:26

Babashka - UKIP have policies that are racist, sexist and homophobic

Can you post links to these policies from UKIP themselves?

In addition, I fail to see how tightening immigration rules is in any way racist. It's a sad state of affairs when patriotism and wanting the best for Britain and British people gets you branded a racist.

funnyossity · 22/02/2015 14:34

Dawndonna I thought that when I read FreeSpirit's post.

I was brought up on a working class estate and that woman would have sounded unacceptable in the 70s.

There were words we used (coloured springs to mind) that are unacceptable now but the sentiments and her wording would have marked her out as a racist back then. Although my mum would have called her "prejudiced" in old money.

LouiseBrooks · 22/02/2015 14:35

Freespirit I'm 58. It certainly wasn't acceptable when I was growing up either although some people were racist. It has nothing to do with age.

Without doubt UKIP does attract a lot of racists, homophobes etc. that doesn't mean everyone in the part is, but it's one reason I'll never vote for them. The other reason being that Farage is a complete and utter twat.

GymBum · 22/02/2015 14:46

For anyone that is deluded enough to believe Farage isn't a racist, lying, manipulative bigot please just look at his EU bed fellows, the Europe For Freedom and Democracy (EFD) group. This is an alliance of parties from different countries of which Farage is a co-president.

This group includes white supremacists who have posed in Nazi uniforms at meetings, a ex national front member, an ex member of the Waffen SS and a party leader that says rape is non-existent. This is but a few of the disgusting views of Farages and his EU bed fellows...

LumpySpacedPrincess · 22/02/2015 14:47

Just have a look at their 2010 manifesto, it was littered with racist and misogynistic views.

They've disowned it now but they were all very happy with it 5 short years ago.

Anonimousy · 22/02/2015 14:48

Ukip are vile. Let's hope people come to their senses and stop thinking they are at all new or refreshing (vomit)

maddening · 22/02/2015 15:06

Babashka - that is no excuse for giving a party of racist, sexist, homophobic and all round biggots a voice by validating them in to parliament

DoraGora · 22/02/2015 15:09

If you only expel people who are recorded for having said racist things in public, that's different from expelling people who share racist views. I can't help thinking that it's no coincidence that there are so many racists in the party.

LadyFairfaxSake · 22/02/2015 15:11

Despite being clowns UKIP are attracting support, particularly among the working class poor who, as a pp wrote, see erosion of their opportunities. Woman's Hour on R4 last week interviewed a group of women as part of the build-up to the election. Many of them expressed sympathy with some of UKIP's ideas.
What practical steps ought the mainstream parties to be taking to reclaim the ground UKIP are occupying?

Sallyingforth · 22/02/2015 16:25

Well Lady perhaps they could start by earning back some respect for the people they are supposed to be representing and working for.

If the main parties were seen to be capable of governing properly then voters wouldn't be driven away to the loonies and racists.

OP posts:
ghostyslovesheep · 22/02/2015 16:48

people on believe that shit because it serves the purpose of the Tories as well - blah blah immigrants blah blah dole scum blah blah poor people are to blame for everything

the right wing share the same agenda - Ukip are The Sun to the Tory Times

meglet · 22/02/2015 16:51

the one person I know who has said they will vote ukip is indeed racist.

Mistigri · 22/02/2015 16:52

You can only expel a certain number of "bad apples" before people start to ask why there were so many bad apples in the first place. Plus it's common knowledge that the rise of UKIP has coincided with the collapse of support for the BNP. Those ex BNP members are not now voting green ;)

scatteroflight · 22/02/2015 19:09

UKIP are the only party that want full border control - provided by exit from the EU and a points based system like Australia.

Inevitably this means that people who are racists will be drawn towards them. It is an unfortunate byproduct of being the only party who want to address unsustainable mass immigration. This does not make UKIP or their policies racist.

GymBum · 22/02/2015 19:19

Scatter then why are they associated with EFD which is a group of racists and bigoted EMPs? Farage and UKIP are racist if they weren't they wouldn't be so closely linked the national front and white supremacists. Farage is the Co-President of EFD..

It's beyound me why people don't look further than the crap Farage is feeding them.
