To think Americans have better sweets

My favourite sweetie shop has started selling US imports.

Yesterday I had a pack of black cherry jelly beans covered with chocolate and today am happily munching my way through a pack of Raspberry M&Ms. Bloody expensive mind you.

Is it true that you can't get blackcurrant foodstuffs in the US? Something to do with blackcurrant bushes being banned due a fungus that that went rampant or something?

I think this might have been a long time ago, but that is the reason for the grape flavoured stuff.

I may, of course, have that all wrong. That does tend to happen. Grin

Couldn't agree more about Hershey bars. I was so looking forward to trying them when we went to the States last year but they were quite, quite disgusting!

So famous and so foul!

emilywrites · 20/02/2015 19:03

YANBU! Reeses Peanut Butter Cups are the best candy, of any time, in any place.

Hershey's Kisses are luscious, and, when a single Kiss is pushed into the top of a chewy-baked, warm peanut butter cookie, the result is something divine.

Peppermint Patties are amazing! The proper way to eat them, of course, is to store the bag in the freezer and eat each Pattie immediately after extraction (they don't freeze solid).

emilywrites · 20/02/2015 19:05

Marvin, black currants are no longer banned in the US, though they used to be.

I grew up in the US, and we had black currant bushes in the back yard. My mom used to pay me to pick them; she made jelly and juices with them.

People in Europe keep telling me that this isn't possible...

laughingmyarseoff · 20/02/2015 19:10

YABU, their chocolate tastes like it's gone off. In the US I tried desperately to find a good one to get my chocolate fix, the nearest I could come to was M&Ms.

laughingmyarseoff · 20/02/2015 19:10

Although salt water taffy=awesome

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 20/02/2015 19:14

I played Jan in Grease at Christmas and had to eat American sweets. Tootsie Rolls are ok. Twinkies are the most vile creation I've ever tasted.

zebracustardcream · 20/02/2015 19:17

Australia has proper Cadbury stuff not the vile new recipe. And cherry ripe and treat bars. Nz has chocolate fish. Mmmmm

US candy is gross except reeses and jelly belly beans.

ColdJerseySpud · 20/02/2015 19:22

I have to hold my hands up and say I think Twinkies are vile. Absolutely Vile.

Apparently im not normal in my family for thinking that.

Peepants78 · 20/02/2015 19:33

I love all the cinnamon favoured sweets. Red Hots, Hot Tamales, Dentyne (they used to do cinnamon one here I think?), big red...

londonrach · 20/02/2015 19:35

Yabu...american chocolate and sweets are vile.....

Dakiara · 20/02/2015 19:58

I like Nerds, Sweetarts, Junior Mints, Starburst. There tends to be some nice (if rich) peanut stuff over there too. As far as chocolate goes, the Ghirardelli stuff is nice, the filled square ones.

HappydaysArehere · 20/02/2015 20:19

Have you noticed there are invariably offers on Cadbury's chocolate bars? The Americans have changed the make up based on their horribly incorrect theory that if it is cheap they will sell more. What they have done to this lovely old favourite is a crime. We should march as one to their Embassy and demand our rights. "Give us back our Cadbury's chocolate" and all you shareholders who sold part of our British way of life should hang their heads in shame.

Scrumbled · 20/02/2015 20:25

I will forgive them for their candy sins as they gave us Reeses Peanut Butter Cups.

TwinkleThis · 20/02/2015 20:28

In answer to about 85% of these "this stuff is vile" responses, I would add...

"...because I didn't grow up with it."

Palate, palate, palate!

notnaice · 20/02/2015 20:28

Yabu British chocolate and sweets are the bees knees. or was until Kraft got involved Angry .

mumeeee · 20/02/2015 20:29

YABU. American sweets are horrible and full of artificial colours. Also I can't stand their chocolate.

Taz1212 · 20/02/2015 20:32

Hershey's chocolate tastes like chalk to me and I grew up on the stuff! Now that you can buy Reese's Pieces etc here I'm happy. I don't miss any other sweets.

Bean89 · 20/02/2015 20:35

Their chocolate is shit, but their powdered donuts are boss.

BreakfastAtStephanies · 20/02/2015 20:36

Hershey bar white with cookie pieces in is disgusting. Truly Eeeeeurgh. DD has a very sweet tooth indeed and couldn't eat it. Said she prefers Cadbury Oreo Bar but she hasn't had one of those lately and probably that has changed.
However YANBU about the gorgeous Jolly Ranchers. We all love those. DS hunts them down. I also like Mikes and Ikes ( like very tasty jelly beans ). DD likes Nerds.

ToysRLuv · 20/02/2015 20:56

People throwing chocolate away? I don't think I have ever tasted horrible chocolate. Apart from some extremely dark bars or creme egg, which is basically just full if sickly icing, not cream (lying cunts!)

Primadonnagirl · 20/02/2015 21:01

Agree that Sees Candies are the best though..Cannot believe they haven't tried to bring them to the UK..it would finish off Thorntons for good.

bluebeanie · 20/02/2015 21:09

YABU. It's rubbish. I tried allsorts of 'classics' such as Baby Ruth, Twinkies, etc when out there. All naff. I will give them credit for stocking Mountain Dew drinks though (not the bright green energy drink crap sold in the UK). I miss that being sold here.
