To think Americans have better sweets

My favourite sweetie shop has started selling US imports.

Yesterday I had a pack of black cherry jelly beans covered with chocolate and today am happily munching my way through a pack of Raspberry M&Ms. Bloody expensive mind you.

B&M Bargains do loads of American stuff.

DH likes Mike and Ikes and i like the Mint M&Ms they also have Pretzel M&Ms, loads of Hersheys and Reeses stuff. And Twinkies.

Sparklingbrook · 20/02/2015 18:08

DH likes Nerds too.

squoosh · 20/02/2015 18:09

Is that why he married you?

Ho ho ho.

Nomama · 20/02/2015 18:11

Who mentioned Hershey's? It is vile, too sweet and weirdly oily... Reeces are even sweeter.

I've never tried other sweets, I just imagine they are sweet and icky.

I could edumacate myself in B+Ms I suppose Smile

TSSDNCOP · 20/02/2015 18:13

The almond M&M is a truly marvellous and wonderful invention.

They have whole almonds.

If that were here, they'd be teeny, mean little chips of nut.

I also recently sampled white chocolate M&M. Very pastel but pleasant.

Reece's and Hershey are vomity vom vom.

YABU - I used to live in Japan (where the chocolate and sweets are - or then we're - both limited in range and fairly unappetising to my palate) and an American ccolleague brought chocolate she'd had sent over to a party... For a brief tantalising moment I thought it would actually be chocolate as I knew it... But no, there is a reason the call that substance "candy" - makes your teeth hurt at 20 paces and has very little in common with actual chocolate. ..

Been bitter about American "chocolate" ever since :o Living outside the UK again now and have heard rumours an American firm have bought and violated the sacred British institution that is/was Cadburys Angry - does Dairy Milk taste like sugar and chemicals now too? Sad

SmashleyHop · 20/02/2015 18:15

YABU and I say that as an American. I love the chocolate over here. However... Reese's are heaven. Also the cookies and cream hershey's bar. I also much prefer the American Starburst to the UK one ( I cannot handle blackcurrant- give me gross fake grape any day)

ToysRLuv · 20/02/2015 18:15

YANBU. I like Hershey's and crazy flavour stuff. Also, peanut butter cups... mmmmm.....

iklboo · 20/02/2015 18:16

Oh no. It's fou'. Even DH won't eat much of it (except Jujy Fruits) and he'll eat pretty much anything!

TheFecklessFairy · 20/02/2015 18:16

I was soooooo excited when my friend went to USA and brought me back a couple of Hershey Bars. I'd heard so much about them - they are part of American culture.

They were the most disgusting thing I had ever tasted - and went straight in the bin!

fairnotfit · 20/02/2015 18:17

York Peppermint Patties are delicious, especially if they are kept in the freezer.

iklboo · 20/02/2015 18:18

After any nuclear apocalypse the survivors will be cockroaches. Who are feeding on Twinkies (

Mominatrix · 20/02/2015 18:23

YANBU, only if you mean Reese's (not Reeces!) Peanut Butter Cups and Peanut M&Ms. Also, Williams Sonoma Peppermint Bark (but I'll also accept the Trader Joe's version). Also, Jolly Ranchers and American Mars Bars and the red liquorice (forgot the name).

In general, I find candy bars pretty disgusting, and not a fan of US or UK candy. For those decrying Hershy's chocolate - I agree, but I also am not a fan of any UK chocolate (except Green & Blacks and Montezuma).

Nomama · 20/02/2015 18:25

Feckless, when a colleague brought some back it sat in the staff room until we drew straws to see who would throw chocolate in the bin.

Sadly, the lovely man who had bought it drew the shortest straw.... so I had to step in and do the deed for him! Do you know, it didn't even hurt?

Nomama · 20/02/2015 18:26

only if you mean Reese's (not Reeces!) so bad even the spelling police can't be arsed to get it right! Smile

LikeABadSethRogenMovie · 20/02/2015 18:29

Noooo!! Candy is gross over here (US). Give me a packet of Buttons or Smarties or Fruit Pastilles any day of the week.

nochocolateforlentteacake · 20/02/2015 18:31

And as for Oreos ... They are disgusting and make your teeth all black.

balia · 20/02/2015 18:34

Australian sweeties - Cherry Ripe. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

SquinkiesRule · 20/02/2015 18:38

US sweets are mostly yuck, full of High fructose corn syrup and dye. But I wouldn't say no to some Mike n Ike's or Good n Plenty or even a Payday.
Even those are way too sweet.

FarHaveITravelled · 20/02/2015 18:45

Mint Oreos are amazing (though a biscuit rather than a sweet).

xvxvxvxvxvxvxvxv · 20/02/2015 18:47

YABU

Their chocolate is worse than poundland Easter egg or advent chocolate.
The only thing they do well is peanut butter chocolate. But would be much better if Cadbury made peanut butter cups.

TalkinPeace · 20/02/2015 18:53

YABU
sorry but when I spent my summers in the states the ONLY sweet I missed when I came back to the UK was Wintergreen

American stuff is MUCH TOO sickly sweet

Capn' Crunch
Rainbow Cheerios
spray cram wit sweetener AND sugar
Carvel sugar ice cream

in fact pepperidge farm goldfish are the one thing I still like

grovel · 20/02/2015 18:53

Outrageous OP. I love the US to bits but their sweets/chocolate are simply disgusting. They muck about with breakfasts too.

grovel · 20/02/2015 18:54

Yep, the goldfish are surprisingly subtle. And yummy.

BatmanLovesPeopleHeShouldnt · 20/02/2015 18:57

I love a Swedish fish.

And Butterfingers.

But the rest... eurgh
