To think Americans have better sweets

Oldsu · 20/02/2015 17:44

My favourite sweetie shop has started selling US imports.

Yesterday I had a pack of black cherry jelly beans covered with chocolate and today am happily munching my way through a pack of Raspberry M&Ms. Bloody expensive mind you.

Reese's peanut butter cups, cherry dr pepper that's about it.

Hershey's is totally BOAK

Shakshuka · 21/02/2015 05:07

Yabvvvu.

American chocolate is foul and now they want to stop us having decent chocolate

Peanut butter M&Ms are lovely but generally British chocolate and sweets are a zillion times better

claraschu · 21/02/2015 06:26

For me, 100% maple sugar candy is the best sweet in the world: one of the only kinds of sweet worth eating. I have never seen in in the UK or Europe, so I guess YANBU.

TheNewStatesman · 21/02/2015 07:23

See's candies are very good indeed. Peanut butter cups are good too (esp the dark chocolate ones).

Hershey's, however, is absolutely disgusting. Someone brought some into work once. I had to make myself an extra strong cup of horrible instant coffee to wash the horrid aftertaste out of my mouthit really was that disgusting (and I am NOT a chocolate snob). I later on discovered that Hershey's uses a "soured" milkthat's why it tastes like something that's gone slightly off. Yuck! But apparently that sour/vomit-y flavor is considered part of the appeal by those who like it...

ChocolateCherry · 21/02/2015 07:40

I bought some Twinkies from B&M. I'd heard of them but never tried them. God they were horrible. Like sweet fish fingers filled with pus.

mathanxiety · 21/02/2015 07:48

Oh yes they do have Salt n Vinegar 'chips', and Flaming Hot Cheetos are better than Chili Heatwave Doritos imo. And the Take Five bar is a masterpiece.

Hershey bars otoh are truly horrible, and the lack of blackcurrant flavour anything is a sad, sad thing.

You can always find it in Polish and E European shops though.

Mousefinkle · 21/02/2015 08:25

Yabu. It's all GMO chemical shit. In this country you buy sweets that make sure to put "contains nothing artificial" etc on the front. Over there it says "contains artificial flavours and colours and GMO ingredients" Grin. Very off putting.

I had the Halloween oreos and pumpkin spice ones shipped over, such a let down! Tasted like custard creams tbh. Haven't dared to try Hershey's because everyone says it's shit. They've destroyed our precious cadburys. The 'breakfast' cereals are HIDEOUS and shouldn't even be allowed to be called food. To me, a lot of American food is some weird experiment to see how the body reacts to certain chemicals. Maybe that's too conspiracy theorist of me but seriously...

The ONLY thing I envy is trader Joe's and whole foods. If we had a healthy supermarket like that I'd be happy.

whothehellknows · 21/02/2015 08:34

Cinnamon & wintergreen sweets are awesome.

Notso · 21/02/2015 08:50

Jelly Belly Beans,
Mike 'n' Ike's,
all the different flavoured M&M's,
Reese's cups particularly the white chocolate ones,
anything cinnamon flavoured,
Oreos,
root beer,
Cheetos,
That really nice red liquorice stuff.
Love all of the above.

nochocolateforlentteacake · 21/02/2015 08:52

The cereals are mind boggling too. Sweets, biscuits...in cereals?

Siennasun · 21/02/2015 10:24

Yabu American chocolate in particular, and their food in general is not great.
I do like Cheetos, even though they can barely be classed as food Grin

chocolateorsalad · 21/02/2015 11:06

The only thing I really like is Junior Mints. A friend brought them back from the US and they were so addictive. I could have eaten 20 boxes. I tried Candy Corn, thinking it'd be nice after seeing it on TV and in films, but nope, it's gross.

The only thing I like the idea of is the themed sweets. America seems to go all out with Halloween and Christmas themed sweets. Apart from a couple of jelly spiders in Haribo, we don't really get that over here.

chocolateorsalad · 21/02/2015 11:08

Oh and Twinkies were so disappointing. Tastes like pure sugar and chemicals.

trixymalixy · 21/02/2015 11:15

YABU, I thought the Hershey's kisses someone brought us as a present were off, but no that's just how they taste. Vile!

I do like American grape flavour though.

emilywrites · 21/02/2015 13:01

I hope that Cadbury chocolate can be fixed so that it tastes more like Hershey's, actually. This will save me time and money locating chocolate that I like.

AliceinWinterWonderland · 21/02/2015 13:03

I'm American and I prefer the British sweets. Grin Chocolate is so much better here!

AliceinWinterWonderland · 21/02/2015 13:04

I don't like Hersheys, but if you really want it - they usually have it at Asda as well as tootsie rolls and reeses.

TalkinPeace · 21/02/2015 13:10

On the other hand I do wish you could get frozen lemonade in the UK

and Root Beer - decent root beer is my fave drink when I'm stateside

Crocodopolis · 21/02/2015 13:10

Junior Mints are the bomb.

RabidFairy · 21/02/2015 13:14

I far prefer UK sweets, although I like the odd US sweet.
UK chocolate is far nicer than US chocolate, but German chocolate is the winner.

emilywrites · 21/02/2015 13:16

I miss cinnamon candy as well. I hope some sort of cinnamon candy is added to the Cadbury stable.

Also, Pumpkin Pie is the best ice cream flavor ever. I've asked for this in British supermarkets, but I haven't ever found it. Not anywhere in Europe, either.

fatlazymummy · 21/02/2015 15:20

The only American sweets I've ever has are M+M's (the chocolate ones). They don't compare to smarties, IMO.
Last year, our local co-op had a promotion on hershey bars. I don't think they could even give them away. I know they were still festering on a shelf months later at rock bottom prices.
I don't think British people are ever going to take to American sweets and chocolate, tbh, no matter how many other 'Americanisms' we adopt.

Ev1lEdna · 21/02/2015 15:29

Butterfingers and Pretzel Flipz - Yes! But... jelly tots and fruit pastilles and their chocolate, ion general, is rank.

serin · 21/02/2015 15:30

YABU (except for the peanut butter cups).

We send ration boxes of British sweets and chocolate to my cousin's family in California and they were born in the USA. It is something my Gran used to do and since her death we have continued the tradition.

They send us hoodies and baseball caps in return (they are better at them!!)
