To feel giddily excited about giving my daughter this gift

My DD has always had whatever I could provide....sometimes more than her friends sometimes less.

But she's never had a decent phone not the be all and end all i know, but phones are pretty important to teenagers aren't they?

By the way this isn't a stealth boast or anything like that.

She's always had hand me downs or second hand ones.On the only occasion she had a new one from a shop it wasnt a very good one.The one she has at the moment is one off ebay she bought with her money.

So last weekend a relative said she could have her old iPhone which was very kind of her and she dropped it off on Saturday but its scratched badly and the screen is smashed right across.

I think the relative was thinking she could get a new case and repair the screen but to be honest I was gutted when I saw the state of it....she accepted it and was grateful and Is talking about doing extra hours at work to pay for it to be repaired. But was so excited she rushed home to get the phone and her face when she saw it broke my heart.Shes not deprived or anything she has a kindle fire and a lovely bedroom but a nice phone just hasn't been on my list of priorities.

So I've bit the bullet and bought her anew iPhone 6. A gold one its bloody lovely! I'm going to give it her tomorrow and make out its a little valentines gift!

She's 17 by the way. She'll never in a million years expect one.

But YANBU if it makes you happy

Ahchoo · 13/02/2015 16:10

Aww bless, how lovely. I love the look on theirfaces when they're given a much coveted gift they're not expecting. What a lovely and thoughtful thing for you to do.

lk26 · 13/02/2015 16:11

How nice to hear of a grateful teenager. Wish we had some in this house ??

okilydokily · 13/02/2015 16:11

That's really lovely of you - she'll be over the moon. Enjoy seeing her reaction!

IsItMeOr · 13/02/2015 16:11

YANBU at all. She sounds very thoughtful and appreciative, so I am sure she will be thrilled and that you will both remember it, probably forever.

Everythingwillbeok · 13/02/2015 16:14

She's not always been lovely!

But she's had a rough ride she was the apple of my mum and dads eye they've both passed away recently.

Her dad has gone missing and so she's not seen him for 4 years.

But I can honestly say she's matured beautifully, understands the value of every penny I earn and is the best big sister ever.

Sounds like she needs a treat. Just get a screen guard and some insurance for it ! Don't want tears if she drops it :)

Everythingwillbeok · 13/02/2015 16:18

Ah thanks prettywhiteguitar it's already insured!!!

How lovely!

Grin It's really wonderful when you can do the equivalent of '6yo surprise trip to Disneyland' particularly as they get older. Don't forget to get it insured!
Letmeeatcakecakecake · 13/02/2015 16:20

Bless you OP!

Let us know how she reacts and make sure she gets a life proof case for it! Xx

MissPhonic · 13/02/2015 16:21

What a lovely thing to do. She sounds very humble. I bet you're just as excited as she will be!

HoVis2001 · 13/02/2015 16:27

When you say you'll make out it's a little Valentines gift, do you mean you'll pretend it's from a mystery admirer? Or do you mean you'll tell her it's a Valentine's gift (family love etc!) from you? Smile

mumofthemonsters808 · 13/02/2015 16:30

My Dd would kill for an iPhone 6, your girl will absolutely love it, what a lovely surprise.

ApocalypseThen · 13/02/2015 16:31

Everythingwillbeok · 13/02/2015 16:34

YANBU. I get excited about giving my DCs gifts and treats. Sounds like she will be thrilled!

SuperFlyHigh · 13/02/2015 16:45

That's so sweet what a lovely mum! Smile Flowers

Hovis2001 · 13/02/2015 16:51

Fair enough! I just had this sudden vision of you perhaps doing what my mother used to do by sending a card in her distinctive handwriting trying to make her think she had a secret admirer. What you have planned is far sweeter!!
