To feel giddily excited about giving my daughter this gift

My DD has always had whatever I could provide....sometimes more than her friends sometimes less.

But she's never had a decent phone not the be all and end all i know, but phones are pretty important to teenagers aren't they?

By the way this isn't a stealth boast or anything like that.

She's always had hand me downs or second hand ones.On the only occasion she had a new one from a shop it wasnt a very good one.The one she has at the moment is one off ebay she bought with her money.

So last weekend a relative said she could have her old iPhone which was very kind of her and she dropped it off on Saturday but its scratched badly and the screen is smashed right across.

I think the relative was thinking she could get a new case and repair the screen but to be honest I was gutted when I saw the state of it....she accepted it and was grateful and Is talking about doing extra hours at work to pay for it to be repaired. But was so excited she rushed home to get the phone and her face when she saw it broke my heart.Shes not deprived or anything she has a kindle fire and a lovely bedroom but a nice phone just hasn't been on my list of priorities.

So I've bit the bullet and bought her anew iPhone 6. A gold one its bloody lovely! I'm going to give it her tomorrow and make out its a little valentines gift!

She's 17 by the way. She'll never in a million years expect one.

Everything Aww thank you!

I'm a soppy old cow nowadays! I swear I used to be tougher!Grin

I agree with PP, the only surefire way to wake up a teenager before they need to be awake is with a bacon sandwich and a shiny new iPhone

Good luck!

Allstoppedup · 13/02/2015 19:37

I think you're lovely OP

ISpeakJive · 13/02/2015 21:55

What a lovely thing to do, OP! Your daughter is very lucky to have you as a mum.
I'm sorry if I'm repeating what others May have said but you have just bought her the iPhone 6. Ask her to guard it like a Rottweiler! There are nasty thieves in school too.

HiawathaDidntBotherTooMuch · 13/02/2015 22:00

That's really lovely of you. Your daughter sounds great. My DC are younger, but DS1 is always so grateful if I get him something he really likes and enjoys. I enjoy doing it too.

Ohnodisaster · 13/02/2015 22:04

Ah-that's lovely!
On my 17th birthday my parents surprised me with a car -an old banger that my dad had done up, nothing swanky.
I'd already gratefully opened the voucher for some driving lessons which I'd asked for and thought was great so was absolutely gobsmacked when I went outside and saw it! It was the most amazing surprise as my parents had never given me the slightest inkling that I could have my own car.
I will never forget beaming from ear to ear all day!

Koalafications · 13/02/2015 22:05

Oh please wake her up! I'm sure she will be thrilled Smile

I insure my ip6 for £6.99 a month thru a company called insurance2go, they were recommended on money saving expert and that covers loss, theft and accidental damage.

zippyandbungle · 13/02/2015 22:47

Sniff. l'm having a moment. I wish you could video her reaction for us. You are a lovely mum and she's a lucky girl to have you. And of course vice versa.

NancyJones · 13/02/2015 22:50

Definitely wake her up. What would be lovely is to tell her what you said up thread, that you bought it as a direct result if how gracious she behaved when she was given the old smashed one. She will remember receiving the phone for a long time to come and it would be nice for the reason to stay with her too.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 13/02/2015 22:56

You are lovely OP.

I remember clear as day being surprised with a brand new 10 speed bike on my 13th birthday. I had never seen anything so cool.

Plomino · 13/02/2015 23:04

Oh wow ! I wish I was there to see her face . It's the best best thing when you give them something that they totally don't expect . My mum did it to me when I was 13 . I was pony obsessed from about 4 . Every birthday , every Christmas , only one thing on my list . A pony . But we were an average family , and it just wasn't going to happen. In the end , we found a pony that I shared for four days a week as long as I did all the work and a small financial contribution . I adored her , in the way that only a pony mad girl could . And then one day , went up to the stables , to find pony and all her stuff had gone . Owner had done a moonlit flit , owing the livery yard a lot of money . I was devastated .

About a week later , my mum asked me to help her out with the food shopping, and said "we might as well go and collect your stuff from the stables ". The yard owner said " oh I put it all in the old stable for safe keeping " - which had both doors bolted . When I opened the door , there stood the most beautiful palomino welsh - Arab cross pony . Mine . I couldn't talk , hell I'm sure I stopped breathing . It turned out that both my parents and the yard owner were so outraged by the previous weeks events , that they had colluded to find me a pony of my own , funded by a very fortunate chunk of inheritance that turned up at the right time . She was my best friend and partner in crime for over 30 years .

I so hope she's as pleased . I'm sure she will be .

ICantFindAFreeNickName · 13/02/2015 23:15

I'm so excited for you. We bought my ds an I phone 6 for Christmas when they first came out. He would never have asked for it in a million years, as they were so expensive. His face as he was opening it and gradually realized what it was, was worth every penny.

Plomino - that's a lovely story.
