To wonder why on earth people buy ready mixed pancake batter

When it only takes a minute to mix an egg with some flour and milk?

I did some mini toad in the hole for a party once, I used cocktail sausages, but the YP rose underneath so it was YP with sausage on top

Anyone who wants to take in flour like that is a bit silly - not a great product, a pancake. Why not just eat the egg which is a healthy natural food.

Nolim · 14/02/2015 15:34

Because i am lazy and it saves me 10 mins. Smile

FightOrFlight · 14/02/2015 16:11

Re: flour weevils and storage - the eggs are already in the flour when you buy it. The weevils don't 'get into' the flour, they are already there in egg form so airtight containers make no difference.

If the flour is stored in the cupboard then the warmth will encourage hatching; storing it in the freezer prevents this as the temperature is too low.

Im trying to think what I tried once that kind of had a similar result. It kind of came out the oven all inside out, or was it upside down. Grin

One of my kids passed along the table - just eat it, just eat it.

MrsLindor · 14/02/2015 19:28

I spend very little time wondering about other peoples pancake habits tbh.

SauvignonBlanche · 14/02/2015 20:16

There's no excuse for that MrsLindor, MN would surely implode without this thread every year? Hmm

ArcheryAnnie · 14/02/2015 20:20

Because, JillyR, pancakes are delicious.

justmyview · 16/02/2015 09:21

I sort of agree with OP, but then again, why do people take a taxi instead of a bus, why order a takeaway pizza instead of cooking themselves, why pay for a cleaner instead of doing their own cleaning?

Presumably because they think that it makes life more convenient
and they can afford it

JennyOnTheBlocks · 16/02/2015 09:28

thanks to this thread i've been reminded to add some shakey jugs to the grocery delivery, thanks OP Grin

I have to ask here as i've never seen them in real life. But do weevils actually affect the taste or anything, or are they just unappetising? Grin

Weebirdie · 16/02/2015 09:51

I have been known to say, 'oh to hell with this' and just use the flour.

Staywithme · 16/02/2015 09:52

You'd hate me cooking for you OP. Yesterday I threw some frozen roasties in the actifry, ready made pie in the oven, bag of veg in the microwave and topped it of with ready made gravy. Blush I may have stuffed myself with tinned fruit and ice cream after it was lovely.

They affect the texture if it's very weevily. But if you grind a decent amount of black pepper into it, you can't tell.

From the sounds of things, so was your flour. Grin

MERLYPUSSEDOFF · 16/02/2015 11:38

I do both.
Mix - just add water - for cubs and cub camp.
Home made for at home but it is an event as the kids like every topping imaginable (but apparently not raspberry sauce and cream together). Basics flour is cheap enough and works well. Home made taste nicer IMO but I only have lemon on them. Mix is fine if covered with EVERYTHING but a bit salty for just lemon. Don't do american pancakes or scotch pancakes as boys say they are not the same. No kids, they are better but ho hum.

blackheartsgirl · 17/02/2015 01:28

The eggs are already in the flour Shock Envy

HSMMaCM · 17/02/2015 09:47

Now I need to find space in my freezer for flour. I've seen weevils in my mums flour, but never my own. If flour has weevils eggs in, which might hatch, does that mean I can't eat it as a veggie Grin.

pbwer · 17/02/2015 09:58

Because they are lazy. See also Pre-grated cheese and frozen chopped onions.

JennyOnTheBlocks · 17/02/2015 10:09

you really logged in this morning, just to say that, pbwer?

ohtheholidays · 17/02/2015 10:10

Because sometimes you can pick up a massive container of it for 20p Smile

bumblingbovine49 · 17/02/2015 10:12

I don't know why they buy the mix but I do know why they buy the ready made pancakes to heat up I find the mixes make worse pancakes than my mix does but the ready made one that just need a warm though are very tasty and maybe even better than mine. The ready made ones are more expensive than the mix though.

Having said that Dh usually buys a mix as he just can't be bothered to make the batter himself and if he fancies pancakes and doesn't want to ask me to make them (if he thinks I'm in a strop I'm quite busy) then he buys a mix
