Housewife2010 · 12/02/2015 18:14

When it only takes a minute to mix an egg with some flour and milk?

OP posts:
Bambambini · 13/02/2015 08:24

Can see if it's a one off but

Wheat Flour, Sugar, Cornflour, Dried Egg, Modified Maize Starch, Flavouring, Salt

Vrs

Eggs, milk, flour

highlighta · 13/02/2015 08:26

Hang on..........you can buy ready made pancakes???? Shock

We are so behind the times here............ Wink

Oh yes, i second the tip for keeping your flour in the freezer. And eggs in the fridge, but lets not start that one off again.... Grin

Redglitter · 13/02/2015 09:12

I'd have to buy flour specially to make them. buying a ready mix makes much more sense

unlucky83 · 13/02/2015 09:14

BrockAuLit -just like Sash says - I think you make the batter a tiny bit thicker -but I make thin pancake batter - makes thinner, more crepe-like pancakes but you can use a fairycake/cupcake tin too to make restaurant /auntie Bessie style individual ones -and any spares bag and freeze and then just warm up with your roast (or in my case for a snack ...Blush).
Biggest problem is them sticking - I have a deep metal fairy cake tin just for yorkies I don't wash it, just wipe out -never sticks..never tried silicone ones - but don't think it would work...

StopCallingMeRichard · 13/02/2015 09:15

I agree OP. I've always wondered why people would buy shop bought.

We make pancakes all year round for breakfast, lunch and tea. I make them and the kids make them. You've got to wash the pan and spatula so I don;t think a mixing jug and fork are hugely more work.

I think you have just hit a nerve.........

bigjimsdiamondmine · 13/02/2015 09:17

I do it because we don't have flour in the house and its pointless to buy a big bag and only use a tiny bit. Pancake mix is only 99p anyway and saves wastage!

keepitsimple0 · 13/02/2015 11:15

for people who say it's pointless to buy a big bag of flour for pancakes, you can use flour for other things too. i'll begin the list with cookies, cakes, waffles, and sauces.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 13/02/2015 11:17

keep.. If you have time to bake cookies, cakes, waffles etc. we don't keep flour in as I probably bake once a year and don't have enough storage space to keep it 'just in case'.

I don't think you need to be SAHM to bake. I work full time. I have two DDs. It entertains them to make these things. it's an activity.

keepitsimple0 · 13/02/2015 11:29

but to be honest, I also like cooking/baking myself. it's downtime for me too.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 13/02/2015 12:01

I didn't say anything about being a SAHM! Some people don't have time to bake (workers, SAHM's, whoever). Some people don't like baking. Some people frankly can't be arsed to bake. These are the people who probably don't want a bag of flour lying around for years on end to go mouldy and therefore it makes much more sense to buy a ready make pancake kit!

Baffles me that people don't understand that other people's lives, preferences and choices are different to their own.

Queenlizandabottleofgin · 13/02/2015 12:04

gottobe it won't just go mouldy it will get flour mites and weevils!!

Pancake mix in bottle all the way !!

keepitsimple0 · 13/02/2015 12:17

I understand, don't worry.

We all cut corners in cooking. I just like to resist that trend.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 13/02/2015 12:32

Flour mites and weevils are way worse than mould Smile.

Good for you keepitsimple.

Don't even know why I'm arguing about it, we don't eat pancakes! If we did though I wouldn't buy a giant bag of flour for that one day in 2 years time that I might decide to do some baking.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 13/02/2015 12:34

We have flour, milk and eggs in right now. Also have ready made pancakes. Not the pancake mixture to add water to, but actual pancakes that just need cooking. We got them from Aldi this morning.

I dont like them anyway, but will see how the DCs get on with them.

Mammanat222 · 13/02/2015 16:56

Before this thread I didn't even know you could buy actual pre made pancakes.
I was intrigued so I grabbed a pack from M&S. They aren't cheap but my God are they handy. A minute in the microwave and they are good to go. They also taste just like the home made ones.

Also there is no mess / washing up / prep. I am converted

I have a toddler and 3 week old so this is the only way we're having pancakes this year and yes I know its not Shrove Tuesday yet but I was too curious and had to taste the wares

Just to add that I don't have any flour in my cupboards!

Rowanhart · 13/02/2015 17:39

Sainsbury's value batter mix:

Tells me to add precise amount of egg and milk.

9p a packet so don't waste flour (more economical(.

Perfect yorkies and pancakes every time!

skyeskyeskye · 13/02/2015 18:36

I bought it last year for the first time, and made pancakes for the first time. I will be buying it again this year. I don't keep flour as I don't have time to bake, so it is far more convenient to buy the ready made batter mix once a year.

I also buy frozen yorkshire puddings for the rare occasion that I roast a dinner.

Shoot me now Grin

BrockAuLit · 13/02/2015 18:47

sashh you have made my day - thank you!!

Shock
GotToBeInItToWinIt · 13/02/2015 19:42

Frozen Yorkshire puddings all the way here too!

sashh · 14/02/2015 13:50

BrockAuLit

Glad to help.

And if you add sausages to the tin while it's warming you will get perfect toad in the hole.

justmyview · 14/02/2015 13:59

sashh and brockaulit

If you like yorkshire pudding / toad in the hole, please can I recommend this recipe - it's brilliant & very child friendly and not soggy

blackheartsgirl · 14/02/2015 14:26

I've never had flour weevils, not ever. My mum has though and she stores her flour in a sealed tub and still get them..I wonder why

Ive never made perfect yorkshires either

Weebirdie · 14/02/2015 14:45

I will nip round tomorrow and tell my 89yo arthritic grandma that the things keeping her independent and in her own home - pre-grated, pre-chopped, pre-mixed etc - are now banned by the Harridan Court of MN.

Dont be ridiculous. Anyone with a bit of sense would understand there was no need for the OP to post a list of disclaimers.
