To wonder why on earth people buy ready mixed pancake batter

When it only takes a minute to mix an egg with some flour and milk?

OP posts:
Bambambini · 17/02/2015 20:05

Groove - how do you make em? I make thin crepe type ones.

Bambambini · 17/02/2015 20:06

Pan is definitely important, also has to be the right size.

Wordsmith · 17/02/2015 20:06

I'm wondering who all these people are who never buy eggs or milk or flour except for making pancakes. If that's you - then yes, buy ready mix!

whattheseithakasmean · 17/02/2015 20:10

I remember last year DH bought some ready mix after pancake day because it was reduced to something like 1p. It was vile - even the kids refused to eat the pancakes.

If you usually use a mix, it may be worth trying making your own, as the huge difference in taste may surprise you.

It takes even less time to open the sachet.

SummerHouse · 17/02/2015 20:18

The date on this ^ bad boy is Jan 14.

Groovee · 17/02/2015 20:23

I have a pancake pan, it should only ever be used for pancakes. Non stick one only been used twice.

I have tried crepe type ones and scotch pancakes and they just don't work. Dd's godmother decided to teach me one year and even said "listen we all have strengths and weaknesses and your strengths are beautiful cakes and cookies, mine is pancakes!"

rookiemere · 17/02/2015 20:43

I made two types of pancake batter today: traditional thin style ones and American thick ones.
Do I get some sort of an award ?

Smuggest eejit on Mumsnet this evening

Waltonswatcher · 17/02/2015 20:52

Nah- I get the award. I made the regulation milk ,egg ,flour ones and for my little allergic one I made buckwheat pancakes with coconut milk.
Flipped the tasty little buggers too .

Vickisuli · 17/02/2015 20:58

I agree with OP, can't believe people buy ready mix for something so simple but then I think the same about sponge cake ready mixes where you have to add an egg and oil to them. So that's a packet of flour and sugar then?

To the person who talked about "bit of salt, some baking powder, a little sugar, some melted butter", er you're making pancakes wrong. Egg flour milk, nothing else required.

I suppose if you don't have flour or eggs in as standard, and you buy the expensive type eg organic/free range then a mix would be cheaper. But I a) always have flour, eggs and milk in and b) buy cheap so flour costs 30p and eggs £1 for 10 and will also make a load of other stuff on top of the pancakes.

a half pint 1 egg mix made 4 of us about 5 small pancakes each this morning, so it goes miles.

Eltonjohnsflorist · 17/02/2015 21:09

How can you not believe it after 12 pages of people saying they use it vickisuli?

Waltonswatcher · 17/02/2015 21:15

But the thing is , does anyone really give a shit ?!
So some people but them . Fecking hell . So what?
I'm obviously less judgemental than I thought .
12 pages on pancakes- and it'll all be said again next year too .

SummerHouse · 17/02/2015 21:22

Yeah but next year they will have invented pre drizzled golden syrup. Grin

RunAwayHome · 17/02/2015 21:23

I don't have eggs on hand on a regular basis - why is that so strange? I don't particularly like them cooked in anything I can taste them. If I plan to make a cake or other baking (which I do enjoy, but it's for occasions), then I buy them then. I sometimes struggle to use up the remainder. I do buy free range when I buy them, yes.

Mostly I do have flour in, but it's been sitting around for ages, since again, its main use is for baking. No guarantee I have it at any point - depends on when I last baked and how much I used. I check these things only when I intend to bake again.

I'm single, live alone, cook pretty simple things for dinner.

I haven't even made pancakes today, but I don't see why it would be so strange to buy a mix if I wanted to!

TheGoodEnoughMum · 17/02/2015 21:58

Not since the 70s but we also found silver fish then too. Kitchen zoo!!!!

TheGoodEnoughMum · 17/02/2015 22:00

Sorry - that was a weevils answer to @ArcheryAnnie

Spinnerbear · 18/02/2015 07:49

I don't personally like the mixes, but I don't judge those who use them. I make my own from scratch, with mixed whole wheat and white flour, cut down the oil and add greek yoghurt and they are lovely. I just make my own by preference. No judgement here either way.

MERLYPUSSEDOFF · 18/02/2015 09:33

You can make batter with water. A chef mate showed me. Twas ok.

(I buy cake mix, pastry mix and scone mix for DTs to do on their own. Makes them feel grown up. The scone mix is lush BTW. Even the kids cant bugger it up)

Jackiebrambles · 18/02/2015 10:37

I can't believe people have the time to make pancakes in the morning on a week day!
Although I guess it is half term.

My packet pancakes were ok, but I don't think I'd buy Betty Crocker again. I made my own mix last year and the pancakes definitely were nicer.

weeblueberry · 19/02/2015 16:23

It took me less than 3 minutes to make up the mixture for pancakes on Tuesday. It's not very onerous... :)

I did make it up the night before though. Not because DD is at school or needs to be out the door but they were American style ones and they get even fluffier if you leave the mixture overnight.

GatoradeMeBitch · 19/02/2015 18:37

I bought the Betty Crocker mix this year because I thought it would save on washing - but it was shit. You know how you can buy 'mock' bacon and faux sausages for vegetarians? This stuff was mock pancakes. They looked like pancakes but tasted of absolutely nothing and had to be cooked for absolutely ages before the gooeyness went away. I'll make them properly next time.

HSMMaCM · 19/02/2015 19:07

I made pancake mix while I boiled the kettle for my tea and then put it in the fridge until needed.

MidniteScribbler · 19/02/2015 19:53

I use the pre-mix when we go away for a weekend to a cabin as it's easier than taking little amounts of ingredients and not worrying about whether they have mixing bowls etc.
