To wonder why on earth people buy ready mixed pancake batter

When it only takes a minute to mix an egg with some flour and milk?

OP posts:
Discopanda · 12/02/2015 18:27

Pancake batter is the same as Yorkshire pudding batter and I've been making that since I was knee high to a grasshopper (it was my job growing up when helping my mum cook Sunday lunch) so I just do everything by eye. Mixing it is great for getting rid of bingo wings too!

AmyElliotDunne · 12/02/2015 18:28

Because it's nicer. I buy the American pancake mix from Costco and while I know that it doesn't take long to mix together a few ingredients, it's still 4 or 5 things once you add a bit of salt, some baking powder, a little sugar, some melted butter etc.

With this stuff it's a cup of mix and a cup of water, doesn't waste a pint of milk, doesn't need me to have eggs in stock, just a scoop, a mix and the pancakes are tasty and fluffy, where ones I make from scratch come up leathery and rubbery and taste of nothing.

susiedaisy · 12/02/2015 18:29

Because I can't arsed to mix the batter and it costs the same for us as buying flour, and eggs

Micah · 12/02/2015 18:31

My mother in law bought me some one year.

It was vile.

It is much easier to make my own. I send 9 year old to make the batter herself. I just pitch up when it's time to fry and eat :)

Royalsighness · 12/02/2015 18:32

I buy it but this year I'm buying the ready made pancakes instead.

Fuck it.

Sleepyfergus · 12/02/2015 18:33

Judgy pants much?

Goodness, I must have reached an all time low for buying a (hushed tones) ready mix.

I'll get me coat and ye can get tae fuck

Alisvolatpropiis · 12/02/2015 18:33

You can't think of a single reason why? Okay then Hmm

Royalsighness · 12/02/2015 18:34

I always make my own yorkshires but use aunt Bessie's powder and add water to make them, Because I'm a lazy slattern!

parallax80 · 12/02/2015 18:35

Camping

SoonToBeSix · 12/02/2015 18:35

I buy Auntie Bessie frozen pancakes. A few seconds in the microwave and done.

ihave2naughtydogs · 12/02/2015 18:35

Because I dont eat eggs and I hate the fucking things in the fridge. It's like a 6 pack of chicken periods or abortions in a carton. VILE

ArcheryAnnie · 12/02/2015 18:37

Has anyone ever truly found weevils in their flour?

lanbro · 12/02/2015 18:38

I make my own pancake and Yorkshire pudding mix but I always use frozen mashed potato, no peeling, no lumps and ready in minutes!

Royalsighness · 12/02/2015 18:38

I do laugh when i see biscuit or cake mix that says "just add egg, milk, water, oil and chocolate"

So basically this is just some flour and a recipe for 3 quid?

DontDrinkandFacebook · 12/02/2015 18:39

But you'll eat them in a ready made cake or batter mix Ihave? Confused

What a very weird thing to say.

lanbro · 12/02/2015 18:39

Yes, I've had weevils in flour, quite common I think

Sleepyfergus · 12/02/2015 18:39

Wow dogs, so you dont like eggs much then?Shock

BitOutOfPractice · 12/02/2015 18:40

Oh gosh OP only asked why...very defensive aren't we? Wink

I'm the world's laziest cook but even I make pancakes myself. Got to be way cheaper if nothing else

susiedaisy · 12/02/2015 18:43

I think it's the op's wording of "why on earth" that's made some people a bit defensive. "Why on earth" indicates raised eyebrows and a judgey tone of voice IMO

AlfieandAnnieRose · 12/02/2015 18:43

I've tried the ready made batter, an aunt Bessie's one, and it was vile! Didn't taste anything like pancakes. Homemade ones are much nicer.

julker · 12/02/2015 18:43

I think sometimes its just habit too, people don't necessarily realise they could do it themselves (if they don't have confidence in the kitchen)

We used to get frozen veggie toad in the hole until I tried making it, would never get one again now I know how quick and easy it is! So much nicer and the frozen one takes longer to cook too! We had bought them for years though out of habit and thinking it was more convenient

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 12/02/2015 18:43

Ready made pancakes or pancake mix kind of defeat the object of pancake day though don't they Grin.

Kaekae · 12/02/2015 18:45

Every year I have made my own and whipped up the cream, this year I have bought ready made pancakes in a packet just to heat up and squarty cream. Can't be arsed to make them this year as we all come home at different times and last year the whole pancake making went on all night. Poor me who was doing it all.

MrsMook · 12/02/2015 18:45

I can understand premade (very handy for 30 brownies) but the amount of convenience from the packet stuff compared to making normally is pretty negligible. Value plain flour is only about 28p and the same as regular brands.

BitOutOfPractice · 12/02/2015 18:48

I think why on earth simply indicates puzzlement, not judgement but obviously people feel a little...erm...touchy!
