We're trying to think of a name for our new daughter and I want to find one that is actually fun/useful to have rather than one that we like but is horrible to actually be called.

YourMaNoBraBackOfMyCar · 04/02/2015 10:16

I'm Leanne. Patron saint of shoplifters.

Booboostoo · 04/02/2015 10:17

My name is Nafsika. It was my grandmother's name so that is nice but otherwise it is a pain. It's difficult in my native Greece and impossible in other countries. No one can spell it and friends squirm trying to pronounce it.

Aherdofmims · 04/02/2015 10:23

I like my name, which is Francesca.

I am older than most people in this country with this name as it became more popular later on, which is nice as hopefully people think I am younger!

In Italy it is a very traditional and perhaps somewhat dated name.

My reservation about it is that it could be considered a name that no actual posh person would be called but that someone trying and failing to be posh would choose for their child. But broadly I like it.

bathshebaeverbusy · 04/02/2015 10:32

It's Gillian.
I have a love / hate relationship with it.

CrazyBaubles · 04/02/2015 11:41

I've always liked my name - right up until a certain film came out and kind of ruined it. It's Fiona. I was the only one in my school and I haven't met many others - not too obscure but not masses of us around apparently.

I don't have Dc yet but I lean towards classic names. Rose is a favourite of mine at the moment

FryOneFatManic · 04/02/2015 12:07

I like my own name, but can't tell you what it is as it's distinctive.

My DD has a pretty classic name, that had been my great grandmother's name. She really suits it. It's not in the top 10 (maybe not even the top 50) but it's nice (Harriet).

I think if I was minded to choose another name for me, I'd have liked Alexandra.

My DM, however, has admitted that one name on the table for me when I was born was Tabitha. I am sooooo grateful I never got that!

drbonnieblossman · 04/02/2015 12:41

My name always gets a quizzical look and a "sorry ?". But I love it.

My name is Ellis.

Which I'm guessing will out me. But whatever. I'll live!!

Ninaprettyballerina · 04/02/2015 13:02

My name is Nina. It's really not common at all now a days but back in the day it was. There were 3 of us in my school class

wanttostayasecret · 04/02/2015 13:08

I like my name, but not how I got it!

My name's Sacha.......so was my mother's neighbour's alsatian Hmm

Stinkylinky · 04/02/2015 13:22

My names Layla.

I really like having a different name, it was really uncommon when I was younger but I do hear more and more children called it now.

I was named after the song by Eric Clampton which I love!!

I do get miffed at people spelling and pronouncing it wrong. Some bloke at work kept calling me Lauren, when I pointed out that my name is actually Layla, he just said "Lauren/Layla, same thing" Erm no it's not.

VitoCorleoneAgain · 04/02/2015 13:30

I always wanted to be called Gloria when i was a kid, because i was sure that anybody called Gloria must have magic powers HmmBlush

I am named after the Marillion song from the 80's

TheListingAttic · 04/02/2015 13:37

I'm not wonderfully keen on mine - Hannah. It's not awful, but ever since I was told the second option was Jessica I've wished they'd gone for that!

Think it's very much a question of personal taste - unfortunately you can't really guarantee your DD will like her name just because other people with that name do! (Nice thought though!)

Crabstick · 04/02/2015 13:42

I'm Emma. I like my name.

Wailywailywaily · 04/02/2015 14:05

I have a very unusual name with a very unusual incorrect spelling. I love my name and have shortened dthe explanation down to "I am named after a Cornish princess" it seems to be enough explanation for most people. I have no idea where I got the idea from but I have a feeling I made it up as an exasperated teen Grin

AdamsMissus · 04/02/2015 14:18

My name is Evie and my DH is Adam. (yes, really!) I never met any another Evie until I had my own DC and suddenly it is super popular. I don't mind it but would rather be just plain Eve which seems to be a bit more grown up.

ClumsyParents · 04/02/2015 16:10

I didn't l like my name when I was a child as it is unusual, I wanted to be called "something 'normal' like Sarah or Emma."

Now I'm an adult, I love my name now because it is unusual and regularly get complimented on it.

I'm Claudine

JackieTheFart · 04/02/2015 16:16

My name is Amy.

I like my name.

I always liked the names Sylvia and Gloria as a kid because they sounded like silver and gold! It's weird because my mum said she was the same as a child - we only shared this recently!

SoonToBeMrsB · 04/02/2015 16:23

My name is Jessica and I really like it. I'm known as Jess to all but my parents, though I've started to embrace my full name more as I get a bit older.

FreeSpirit89 · 04/02/2015 16:35

My name is Amy-Louise.

I hate it. I'd rather just plain Louise. Amy is pretty for young girls, and little old ladies, not an adult.

youarethequarry · 04/02/2015 16:47

My name is Chelsea. Largely considered a chav name and as I have seen on here 'off putting to employers'. I love my name. Not common in my age group (early 30s) but not too wacky. I also have a senior marketing job and have never once felt judged based on my name. People seem to struggle with spelling which is why I gave my son a really difficult name to spell (since my simple name proves people spell anything wrong anyway)!

UrchinMadeOfAcne · 04/02/2015 17:03

Great username, youarethequarry Wink

JadziaSnax · 04/02/2015 17:21

My name is Alison, I absolutely hate it. Sounds dull, boring and frumpy. Not sure what I'd have chosen instead though, probably something classic that didn't scream 'born in the 70s'.

MrsMarigold · 04/02/2015 17:36

I like Alison, like the Wife of Bath "Husbands had she four at churche door"

lekkerkroketje · 04/02/2015 17:44

I have a French version of a bible name, which is commonly (misspelt and pronounced) everywhere across Europe, but avoids the 'huh' and gives me an extra 3 words in which to pretend to be local Grin I hate hate hate the English misspelling, even though the French spelling isn't exactly uncommon either.

Theresadogonyourballs · 04/02/2015 17:53

Hate mine. (Sick of repeating it, sick of spelling it, sick of people saying, "pardon?")
My three siblings have totally normal, nice names. God knows what my parents were thinking. My mum actually concedes now that it probably wasn't the greatest choice, (she heard it on the telly when preggers and thought, "ooh I like that").
I've never met anyone in real life with the same name, although an acquaintance of mine claims she knows another.
Can't actually put it here as it would out me instantly!
