We're trying to think of a name for our new daughter and I want to find one that is actually fun/useful to have rather than one that we like but is horrible to actually be called.

I'm a Sarah and am staggered to hear that someone on here doesn't like being called it. I LOVE it! Okay, it's quite popular (I was born in the 70s and there were 5 in my class at school) but it's a decent name, everyone knows how to spell it (unless you're one of those strange people who spell it without the 'h'), it sounds nice and spans the ages.

My only slight issue is that my surname begins with a vowel sound so the two names kind of run into each other when said together.

I would definitely suggest OP, whichever name you choose, practice saying it out loud with your surname!

There were 4 of me in my secondary school form in the 1970s, along with 4 Karens, but with different spellings. I'm the "proper" version though! Wink I share a middle name with a Middleton first name.

Lweji · 03/02/2015 20:03

Yes, no I won't say what it is, but there are a few versions and a most are on the top girls names.

redredholly · 03/02/2015 20:05

So I hear what people are saying: basically names that are pretty and beautiful are good (and don't hinder a career), and names that are popular and classic are good (but not faddish, only heard of in one decade).

I always hated my name as a child and people used to as ask me "why do you have a boys name" The male version of my name ends in 'der'!

My shortened name is used for both sexes although far more common for boys.

About 5 years ago I legally changed my name legally, although only the ending of my name. I made it sound slightly different and also gave myself two middle names!

My parents never gave me any and I'm really pleased with my choice. People ask me no about my name as they say it's quite unusual.

CremeEggThief · 03/02/2015 20:09

Correct, Hound Smile.

bettyboop1970 · 03/02/2015 20:10

How about bettyWink

whatbecomesofsnow · 03/02/2015 20:10

My name is Charlotte and i HATE IT!
Ive always been called Charlie even at home from very young and i love it, i did go through a stage in my teen's of wanting to change it to something "cooler" but i think most people do
Most people, even my PIL actually thought it was my real name and i was very nearly made to miss out on a holiday abroad because they booked it as charlie took ages to convince border control it was a genuine mistake

What a contrast your real name is to your MN name Grin how beautiful, meaning perfect night...gorgeous...I wish I had known this before naming dd 2.

Its a beautiful name.

Rollonpayday · 03/02/2015 20:14

My name is very imaginative and very different, it's.....Debbie!

zeezeek · 03/02/2015 20:16

I'm a Zara. It used to be a bit of a pain because it was quite rare when and where I was growing up and I got called Sarah an awful lot. I've always liked it.

I'm married to a Swede and we wanted to give the girls Swedish names - so chose Malin and Majkin - though she's known by her middle name of Summer!

ScrambledEggAndToast · 03/02/2015 20:26

I like mine it's Eleanor. Get called Ellie.

Claire. I like it, common for those in late 30s/early 40s but quite rare now and fairly classic.

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 03/02/2015 20:42

Yay Creme, beautiful name.

TiggyD · 03/02/2015 20:43

Not revealing my real name. Half my friends call me Tiggy/Tigs anyhow. It's a dull common name. Can't say I dislike it. It's just my name. Would have preferred being called Jonnny Thunderkiss though.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 03/02/2015 20:46

My name's Clare. Not really fussed on my name but I dont hate. I could have been lumbered with a lot worse I suppose.

UrchinMadeOfAcne · 03/02/2015 20:50

Thank you Jimmy. My mum would be happy to hear that!

UrchinMadeOfAcne · 03/02/2015 20:50

Ha! Name change fail.

RhubarbAndMustard · 03/02/2015 20:54

Hated my name growing up. Still not keen as it doesn't suit me at all but MN seem to like it. I'm an Elizabeth.

I love Amber and Naomi. Much more beautiful and less PTA sounding!

curlyweasel · 03/02/2015 21:21

Mine's very boring. Can be a boy's or girl's name and spelled with only one letter. I always wanted my sister's name (Libby). I named my DD Lydia, which I've always liked. Was going to call her Fleur, but it really didn't work with our surname (and possibly a wee bit try hard in retrospect - what with us having no French connections).

lunar1 · 03/02/2015 21:24

I like my name, wish my idiot parents had spelt it the conventional way though. I think if people want to chose an original name they should change their own and not burden their childrenWink

julietbat · 03/02/2015 21:27

As you might be able to tell from my username, mine is Juliet.

I wasn't particularly fussed either way as a kid but I love it now I'm an adult. I get quite a few compliments and I've only known two other Juliets in my life so I feel pretty special Wink.

Bakeoffcakes · 03/02/2015 21:28

I really like my name. It's a classic name that's pretty but not too flowery. Both DDs have classic names too.

I won't be giving my name out on the Internet though.
