We're trying to think of a name for our new daughter and I want to find one that is actually fun/useful to have rather than one that we like but is horrible to actually be called.

I'm another Alison. I always disliked it...so boring, not awful just felt blah to me. I live overseas now and it's a much more unusual name where I live so I like it a little more.

I have a friend called Natalia and I just love her name, I love saying her name! Na-taal-lia!

RaphaellaTheSpanishWaterDog · 05/02/2015 01:46

I hate mine....it's a biblical name, but I'm not saying what! When I was a child in the '70s I wished I was American and told everyone my name was Emmeline (my middle name is Emma - don't like that much either, although it's a perfectly decent name, just don't think it suits me - and thought for some reason Emmeline sounded American!).....

Since I was about ten I've been known to close family/friends by a nickname that relates to a combination of my first and middle names - I always liked that, but the older I get (48 now), the more childish it sounds to me and yet I wouldn't want to revert to my 'real' name.

Annoyingly, cousins, aunts & uncles have always insisted on calling me by my much-hated first name, despite my signing cards with the nickname.....like they're rubbing it in......grrr!

Mind you, my parents' alternative choice for a name for me was Fleur - whilst that's more exotic, I don't think that suits me either.....

If I'd had a DD she'd have been Clementine Ivy (Ivy after my grandma), but we had a DS who has quite an unusual first name and an extremely rare middle name. He likes the shortened version of his first name, but hates his middle name!

Wailywailywaily · 05/02/2015 08:44

Hacluyt that is my name but my dad chose a more unusual incorrect spelling. Its defiantly Cornish Grin

Wailywailywaily · 05/02/2015 08:45

Oops looks like I take after my dad, I ment Hakluyt

Hakluyt · 05/02/2015 08:47

Waily- I love Clarissa! The "at least it's not.."was a reference to TamzinGrey's user name. I wasn't dissing the name, honest.Grin

misstiredbuthappy · 05/02/2015 09:07

On my birth certificate im Roxanne Envy bloody awful but my friends and family use my middle name Zara.

I dont know what my parents were thinking putting them names together !

Wailywailywaily · 05/02/2015 09:35

Hakluyt I'm being a bit dense sorry Blush My Name is like Tamzin but for some reason people I newly meet or who have only read the name always call me Tazmin or Jazmin, it is one of those names that people cannot seem to get right. Its even worse for me because it is spelt so unusually Hmm.

Anyway I completely got the wrong end of the stick not for the first time

I still love it

Wailywailywaily · 05/02/2015 09:37

Clarissa and Vivienne are great names too :)

Hakluyt · 05/02/2015 09:41
Grin

TamzinGrey is a character from a series of children's books I spent several years of my life secretly pretending to be. All the time. She was everything I wanted to be! He best friend was called Clarissa but hated it and would only answer to Rissa. It was me confused things- I got a bit over excited at the sight of the name. Tamzin Is a wonderful name (sadly vetoed by do, who is a clod) I am now trying to work out how you spell it..........

Wailywailywaily · 05/02/2015 10:13

Grin your DD is saved from a lifetime of explaining that her name is indeed Cornish (its my story and I'm sticking to it) and not pronounced Tazmin!

My dad was listening to a Thomas Hardy play on radio 4 on the day I was born, thats where he got it.

Mine is spelt as the son of Tam Wink

Wailywailywaily · 05/02/2015 10:15

I wish I had read the book, Clarissa sounds like my sort of character

Hakluyt · 05/02/2015 10:23

There's a whole series of them- quite hard to get hold of nowadays. But keep an eye open for the Romney Marsh books by Monica Edwards. They are obviously very dated now (I am old) but they are still among my comfort reading.

HelloDoris · 05/02/2015 10:24

I adore the name Vivienne , DH refused to consider it for DD2.

My name is Cheryl (soft c sound)Not sure I'm all that enamoured by it, still I was the only one at school with it.

DD1 is Evelyn but we call her Evey
DD2 is Harriet but we call her Hattie

TamzinGrey · 05/02/2015 14:09

Hakluyt - great to come across a fellow fan. I loved Tamzin too, hence the username. Rye Harbour, where the books were based, is not far from here and I fantasize about Tamzin and Rissa every time we go there. Did you know about the appreciation society? www.monicaedwards.co.uk/

Roomba · 05/02/2015 14:47

Not going to outright say my name here, but I do like it (it was good enough for Henry VIII to marry several times is all I will say Grin. I also like that it has a million different ways it can be shortened, if required.

girliefriend · 05/02/2015 14:52

My name is very popular now I believe in the top 5 girl names.

I still like it a lot though and didn't know any others with the same name growing up.

Kahlua4me · 05/02/2015 17:19

My name is Isabel and I love it. Always have I think, even though people often spell it wrong, including my family at times!

Trickydecision · 05/02/2015 18:31

TamzinGrey and Hakluyt, another fan here, thanks for the link.

Crazyzowhat · 05/02/2015 18:46

Peachy1011 · 05/02/2015 19:18

Not met too many others called the same.

meoryou · 05/02/2015 19:18

i share my name with several actresses, think Connelly, Gray, Lawrence, Aniston (ive you cant work It out then you don't deserve to know ! :)

meoryou · 05/02/2015 19:20

ooops ... I meant ;)

not sure I like it at all!

ByeByeButterfly · 05/02/2015 19:50

My name is Stefanie.

Yes I like it. It's not spelt the traditional way and it never bothered me. In fact my Gran sometimes gets my name wrong in cards and it phases me non - it's not like she's called me something rude or something!

My daughter is the same in that her name isn't the traditional spelling but not so unique that you couldn't recognise where it came from.

Would I recommend someone used my name? If they already liked the name Stefanie/Stephanie then yes definitely. But some find it dated (I don't get that surely society decides when something is dated or not but anyway) but other than that it's an inoffensive, classness name from my experience (met a Stephanie on the breadline and a Stephanie on a £422k a year job).

I love some of people's names on here - it's interesting to see if any of my families name have/do come up!

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 05/02/2015 19:57

Mine's Laura, quite dull really. Now I'm in my 30's I like it more than I did as a child.

iamdivergent · 05/02/2015 20:16

I like my name now but used to hate it - it's not popular or common but if I told you it, would definately out me so I can't Grin

I have heard of a few others (mainly Eastern European) but I dont personally know anyone else with my name and I always get Hmm face when I introduce myself
