We're trying to think of a name for our new daughter and I want to find one that is actually fun/useful to have rather than one that we like but is horrible to actually be called.

My name is Sherri. I like it.

MaxPepsi · 03/02/2015 15:37

I don't really like mine at all. It's a classic name and does actually suit me so my parents chose well. I just would have preferred something else.
I absolutely loathe the shortened version and refuse to answer to it. But I do admit to being a bit weird over that!

daisyswirl · 03/02/2015 15:40

My name is jane and i hate it! Its an old lady name and obvs that nosy lady miss marple. I hate my second name too..i was named after both of my grandmothers so never had a chance really!??

00100001 · 03/02/2015 15:41

I love mine, It's Princess Sha'Nay Nay III

No jokes.

Chillyegg · 03/02/2015 15:42

I love my name I'm named after my great grandma and in English it translates as rainbow ( 1st name) and rosebush (last name). My first name was also written slightly wrong in the registering certificate by my dad so I'm probably the only person with the spelling if my name.

theworkofsatan · 03/02/2015 15:42

I hated my full name (Rebecca) when I was younger but as I have got older I quite like it now. On the other hand I hate Becky, or even worse Becki or any other variations on the spelling of Becky. When I was younger (20s) I liked Becks as the shortened version of Rebecca.

redredholly · 03/02/2015 15:43

Very interesting. I love Amber too! My DH won't have it though. I reckon he must have fancied a few Ambers in his hippy days and been traumatised.

confusedandemployed snap! Really, really didn't like it growing up for reasons you stated, and then as I got older the variations of "Hell" that were used for nicknames/jokes. Including a charming re-write of Hells Bells by ACDC about my chest Angry
Decided it wasn't so bad though once my DM told me what other ones she was considering for me Confused

mumofboyo · 03/02/2015 15:47

I neither like nor dislike my name (Angela) though I do prefer not to be called Ang or Angie. I prefer my sister's name though that would be too much information!

Eva50 · 03/02/2015 15:47

Xanthe is my favourite girls name. I love it. I also like Eleanor.

I hated my name as a child. It's Scottish and a combination of the names of my two aunties. I'm still not keen and would never have chosen it. I would like to be called Joanna or Joanne.

I'm not going to say what my sister is called as that would be too much information. Sorry!

ComtesseDeSpair · 03/02/2015 15:49

I like mine - Carla. It's not weird or unheard of, but neither is it particularly common: I've never been at school or a workplace with another Carla. It has no particular connotations or associations, I don't think - occasionally people ask if my family are Italian but that's about it. No problems with pronunciation or spelling - 95% of the time people correctly assume it's spelled with a 'C', I rarely have to correct their 'K'. Doesn't rhyme with anything nasty (or indeed rhyme wih anything).

All of which I'd say make for a likeable name. I'd add though that names with at least one recognised shortening can be good: if you really dislike being called Isabella, there's always Izzy, Isa, Bella or Belle.

SaucyJack · 03/02/2015 15:49

I like my name in and of itself, but it something that was top ten from about 1980-2010 and so overused as to be utterly meaningless to me. Doesn't feel like my name at all. Everywhere I go I have to be known by my surname initial as well cos there's at least two or three others.

Pyjamaface · 03/02/2015 15:54

I'm called Iris and I hate it.

I know it's a popular name now but not so much 30 20++ years ago. Then it was a little old lady name and I've never felt it really suits

MrsPresley · 03/02/2015 15:54

I'm Priscilla, it's nice enough and after all these years goes well with Elvis

ok it's not really Priscilla but I don't like my name

treaclesoda · 03/02/2015 15:54

I like my name, although I'm not sharing what it is Smile

It is an old fashioned name, an old lady name I suppose. I'm almost 40. I hated it when I was younger, and I got teased about it being so old fashioned. But then as I got older, it was nice to be something different in a sea of Karens and Julies (not that there is anything wrong with either of those names btw).

I think in reality most children go through a phase of hating their names, and most of them come out the other side unscathed. There are of course adults who still hate their names, but I think most people just grow to accept their name and either like it or are a bit 'meh' about it.

QueenFuri · 03/02/2015 16:00

No I hate my name it is Jacqueline awkward to spell and doesn't sound right most people call me Jackie which I hate in equal measure! When I was younger I wanted to be named Sophie and if I ever have a daughter that shall be her name!

SocialMediaAddict · 03/02/2015 16:01

Amber is a hooker name ??

Now that's a first. Jesus.

emwithme · 03/02/2015 16:06

I always wanted to be called Jessica. Jessica is clever but still popular, can play multiple musical instruments well but is sporty enough to be picked for school teams, doesn't panic when she walks into a room full of people but can cope with being on her own too.

But I'm not. I'm Emma. I contemplated changing it when I grew up and then (like someone up there ^) realised I actually quite like it now (and also realised that changing my name wouldn't change who I am inside). I don't have to spell it for people (although half the time I type it as Emam), can shorten it to "Em" if I want to and loved it when my niece (now 9) called me "Maunty Memma"

fullasagun · 03/02/2015 16:09

I love my name, but it's become very fashionable due to Frozen, I'm very popular with my niece Anna though Smile Smile

FreudiansSlipper · 03/02/2015 16:10

Amber is a beautiful name

I love my name. My mum also liked Layla another lovely name but thought my name suited me better

Dawndonnaagain · 03/02/2015 16:17

Hate, hate, hate my name. It's an old fashioned classic, apparently. Same as an actress named Lumley. I have always been the shortened version.
