We're trying to think of a name for our new daughter and I want to find one that is actually fun/useful to have rather than one that we like but is horrible to actually be called.

Trickydecision · 03/02/2015 22:36

redredholly, I do not believe you could not guess. Towels and tee shirts was a big clue, also general smug housewifery. Not a popular person on MN, very unfair that she stole my name.

Gemzybelle · 03/02/2015 23:27

I'm a Gemma. Never really been fond of it. A bit boring and frumpy imo.

I have chosen Abigail for DD2 who is currently on the way. I think its a beautiful name Smile

ihave2naughtydogs · 03/02/2015 23:36

I like my name - Iona . my sisters name is horrible but i cant say it because it would out me.

Momagain1 · 03/02/2015 23:36

you can't win though.. my DD(14) is a Rebecca/Becky/Becca but says why couldn't you have called me Sky or something "cool" like Raven...

She can start a nickname if she wants.

My kids have one serious name and one unusual name each. Since a second middle name is easily done in the UK, you can get quite unusual, but they can ignore it later if they want.

StrawberryTot · 03/02/2015 23:41

I dislike my name as it's so boring, thankfully people rarely use my full name . I still to this day think I've been naughty if someone uses my full band, oh the nostalgia of a misspent youth Smile
I however love my DC's name, my DD's has lots of shortened variations and is known by all. She is also the only child with the name in her school. My DS has a very unusual name, I've never to this date met anyone with the name, plus everyone spells or pronounces it incorrectly. He has a couple of nicknames. Sadly I can't tell you his name as it would instantly out me!

StrawberryTot · 03/02/2015 23:42

Name not band oops

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 03/02/2015 23:46

I don't like my name because it just doesn't suit me. It would out me to tell you as its unusual for where I live. Think German car. Confused
Don't name your child after an inanimate object!

LadyRivers · 03/02/2015 23:49

My name is Michelle, love it now but hated it when I was growing up.

iwanttogotothechaletschool · 03/02/2015 23:49

I have a very unusual name, have never met or heard of someone else having it, and I absolutely hate it. I hate having to spell it out, it gets mispronounced and everyone thinks it is a boys name. Even ticking the female box on forms and putting miss in the title bit and I still get things addressed to Mr crappy name. Growing up it was sheer hell having to explain my name to every new person I met, I now use a lovely short and feminine name instead.
So my opinion is go classics not quirky.

Clearlymisunderstood · 03/02/2015 23:50

I like mine, it's L e a h not too common but not unheard of.

CharityD · 04/02/2015 00:09

Yes, I do like my name. It's of it's time, nowt fancy, but perfectly nice.
I like my anonymity though, so won't say what it is. Smile

toffeeboffin · 04/02/2015 01:59

Love my name - Alex, shortened though from Alexandra. Lots of variations on it too.. Alexa, Lexy, etc.

Minerves · 04/02/2015 02:59

my name is Minerva and though i like it as an adult i always hated it when I was younger, and I still usually go by Neva instead.

steff13 · 04/02/2015 03:13

Stephanie. It's fine, not too common, but not weird, either. I was named after my father.

My daughter is called Sarah, I think it's a beautiful name.

SomewhereIBelong · 04/02/2015 07:37

I'm a Tess, straightforward name - always suited me, I love it.

bigphatarse · 04/02/2015 08:05

My name is Chaley. Hyper-unusual I know. I LOVE it. Hated it as a youngster as wanted to be like the other kids and called 'Debbie' or 'Jackie' (This is in the 70s), but I love it now as I always get comments. My parents chose it from a James Joyce novel and it is Irish.

AnotherGirlsParadise · 04/02/2015 08:23

My birth name was Aleksis. It's considered a masculine name in Finland, where I'm from, and I've always hated it. I changed it by deed poll a few years ago.

glittertree · 04/02/2015 08:32

My name is Janna I really like it ...and in all my years I've never met another Janna :)

hstar1995 · 04/02/2015 08:46

I love my name Smile my name is Holli-may

Failedspinster · 04/02/2015 08:58

I'm Claire, which was a very very popular name where and when I was growing up - there were three in my class alone. The net effect was that I never felt attached to my name growing up, and often didn't respond to it if I heard it called (just presuming that it would never be me that was being called). I also went through the usual phases of wanting to be called something a bit longer and more interesting.

As I grew up and moved elsewhere I started to like my name more and now I actually see it as a bit "classic" and inoffensive. I don't have daughters, but had girls' names picked out for both my babies just in case -DS1 would have been Rosamund Charlotte and DS2 would have been Frances Christina (Frances after the character from the Russell Hoban books, and Christina after my amazing, tough great-gran, who was my heroine.)

StayGoldPonyBoy · 04/02/2015 09:36

My sister and I have unique names, we both like them but if we'd have become accountants or lawyers instead of the creative jobs we do have, they'd have maybe sounded daft! That's something I considered, does it suit an adult, a child and a baby and would I take it seriously on a CV.

Not fussed about being outed, really. Mines Ariadne and hers is Helene(Hel-ain-a). I think hers is prettier than mine, mine often sounds clunky in a Yorkshire accentGrin but at least people don't try tell me my name is Helen when it isn'tHmm

I like less common names too, I think some classic ones are pretty but I didn't want DD being the 5th x in her class. Her names Ingrid.

leedy · 04/02/2015 09:38

If I'd had a DD she would have been Ada.

redredholly · 04/02/2015 09:48

My DH likes ingrid!

My name is Dawn. I really like it but a lot of people who ask my name think it's Donna shortened so call me Donna. Hate hate hate that. Old friends and family used to call me dawnie when I was younger which I dont mind at all.
