tinned tomatoes one of the worst foods to eat

dhdjdbrjrkbr · 31/01/2015 11:55

Just seen someone post that tinned tomatoes should never be eaten due to the BPA and the acidity of tomatoes meaning it leaches alot and is not safe for children to eat.

I had no idea tinned food contained plastic, aibu to cut right down on them? Often go through 12 cans a fortnight :(

He also linked extensively back to his own website. The website that makes him a fortune.

dhdjdbrjrkbr · 01/02/2015 11:21

Well we are not going to agree on it anytime soon. Ibdo find lots of his stuff useful, but he is running a business.

I'm also a Doctor. Not a medical one, but in a far more relevant field that the author of that article. And it's not just the tinned tomatoes he's talking out of his backside about. Seriously - any idiot can post on the internet and claim to be an expert. I caught my cat trying to post on here the other day...

dhdjdbrjrkbr · 01/02/2015 11:45

Anyway forget I ever posted that guy. Lots of cancer charity's have concens over BPA in cans

Oh for crying out loud. You're more likely to get run over by a bus then be killed by tinned tomatoes.

QueenAngst · 01/02/2015 12:12

dhdjdbrjrkbr it's not true lots of cancer charities have concerns over BPA in cans. The Breast Cancer Fund is not a nutural cancer chairty. They are an American advocacy organisation who campaign for removal of 'chemicals' in everyday products. Worryingly, they appear to have zero knowledge of what a chemical is. There is also some laughable science on their website.

RandomNPC · 01/02/2015 12:17

We have an NHS homeopathy clinic at our local health centre- the GPs frequently make referrals- it is very busy.
The homeopath who runs it is also a qualified GP.
It's still bollocks. That GP should be ashamed.

LIZS · 01/02/2015 12:30

But if offering homeopathy enables gps to see higher priority patients quickly and treat them more effectively, surely ,even if it is a placebo effect , it is worthwhile.

noblegiraffe · 01/02/2015 12:33

The European Food Safety Authority issued a press release a couple of weeks ago about their extensive investigation into the safety of BPA.

www.efsa.europa.eu/en/press/news/150121.htm

"EFSA’s comprehensive re-evaluation of bisphenol A (BPA) exposure and toxicity concludes that BPA poses no health risk to consumers of any age group (including unborn children, infants and adolescents) at current exposure levels. Exposure from the diet or from a combination of sources (diet, dust, cosmetics and thermal paper) is considerably under the safe level (the “tolerable daily intake” or TDI).

Although new data and refined methodologies have led EFSA’s experts to considerably reduce the safe level of BPA from 50 micrograms per kilogram of body weight per day (µg/kg of bw/day) to 4 µg/kg of bw/day, the highest estimates for dietary exposure and for exposure from a combination of sources (called “aggregated exposure” in EFSA’s opinion) are three to five times lower than the new TDI."

So even at 12 tins of tomatoes a week you're probably well under the 'safe' level of exposure.

BertieBotts · 01/02/2015 13:02

wowfudge You're probably more likely to get run over by a giant, genetically modified tomato which has escaped the farm Grin

tobysmum77 · 01/02/2015 13:07

yes, a bit more internet scaremongering yippee!!!! (takes big glug out of pepsi max can) Wink

noblegiraffe · 01/02/2015 13:08

LIZS that depends on whether you think it is a good idea for GPs to lie to their patients and sell them snake oil.

If it were just some NHS clearly branded placebo it might be ok, but homeopathy is a massive industry with many adherents who aren't shy of doing dangerous things like advocating sugar pills for malaria prevention. The NHS using homeopathy is giving legitimacy to them.

Fishandjam · 02/02/2015 22:45

OP, it's dihydrogen monoxide I think you should be worrying about, not BPA. It's in loads of stuff, including tinned tomatoes.

RandomNPC · 02/02/2015 22:48

Yep, Fishandjam is right. dihydrogen monoxide. That's the real killer, tens of thousands every year.

RandomNPC · 02/02/2015 22:49

I even hear in some vaccinations too!

chickydoo · 02/02/2015 22:54

Well I'm stuffed then ( or maybe just a stuffed tomato:))
I reckon we get through 6 tins of toms a week here.

dietcokeisgreat · 03/02/2015 07:00

Well, some people believe in jihadist ideas/ gods i don't believe in/ that coasters are sacred/ children should be fed at 5pm etc etc - i just don't agree!!!

most of us survive eating plenty of tinned toms.

EugenesAxe · 03/02/2015 07:20

But then I know loads of people that dishwasher clean IKEA bowls (not BPA free as I recall) and melamine plates - they will leach BPAs that you will then eat when you use the vessels.

These things are everywhere. I think I recall hearing that Heinz have made their children's spaghetti tins lining BPA-free.

Pesticides and stuff on food - again I know lots of people that don't wash fruit and veg that look 'clean'. Cucumbers are the ones that baffle me most - they are in a skin tight plastic wrapper so obviously this dusty residue on the skin is nothing to worry about Hmm.

SomewhereIBelong · 03/02/2015 08:09

BPAs could well turn out to be the PCBs of this generation -

PCBs - oh they're safe in concentrations we are finding, safe, safe, safe, errm maybe we should rethink that a bit, ermm we were wrong, avoid, errm they're toxic... OMG the ozone layer, biomagnification leading to toxic fish etc etc......

but whatever is the case, making fun of someone for having concerns is one of the nasty parts of MN

Worldgonecrazy speaks the truth!

I just had tomatoes on toast and now I can see my spleen.

Oh why didn't I listen?!

I melting, melting, MELTIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGG.......

SomewhereIBelong · 03/02/2015 11:52

Hmm really big and really clever...

BPA act like hormones - they are oestrogen mimics, not poisons/toxins - anybody here an endocrinologist?

GobblersKnob · 03/02/2015 14:26

Well this thread inspired me to have tinned toms on toast which I haven't had for years. It was delicious and now I'm going to be having it all the time so the message is obviously getting through.

dhdjdbrjrkbr · 03/02/2015 17:41

but whatever is the case, making fun of someone for having concerns is one of the nasty parts of MN

It seems the majority here are more interested in insulting or belittling.
