tinned tomatoes one of the worst foods to eat

Just seen someone post that tinned tomatoes should never be eaten due to the BPA and the acidity of tomatoes meaning it leaches alot and is not safe for children to eat.

I had no idea tinned food contained plastic, aibu to cut right down on them? Often go through 12 cans a fortnight :(

I don't think we need to take this question seriously from a poster who thinks the necessity for gluten free diets is an attention seeking fad.

dementedpixie · 31/01/2015 12:07

that mercola site is a lot of scaremongering rubbish

dexter73 · 31/01/2015 12:08

I think if you are that worried about it then stop buying them. Just buy fresh tomatoes and cook them instead.

Or swallow apple pips or you will grow a tree inside you.

LIZS · 31/01/2015 12:10

Report is 2 years old and of questionable provenance. Noone would eat anything based on their "facts"

Mercola posts a lot of unsubstantiated shit about a lot of things.

dementedpixie · 31/01/2015 12:10

Ah, dear Gillian, where is she now I wonder?

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 31/01/2015 12:13

i would never treat Mercola as a source of reputable scientific facts tbh.

mrsdevere
I'm afraid that unless you can back that up with peer reviewed research you are simply talking rubbish.
EVERYONE in the playground knows that swallowing chewing gum is a problem because it stays in you for 7 years.
Please check your facts before posting

dexter73 · 31/01/2015 12:15

I remember reading that someone registered their dead cat for the same qualification that GM has and enables her to call herself a Dr!

Mrsstarlord · 31/01/2015 12:16

Just buy them in cartons.

I read that as Just bury them in cartons (thought that was a touch extreme!)

Pretty much all cans are lined with BPA plastic sad the advice came from a doctor

Was it 'Dr' Gillian McKeith?

Mrsstarlord · 31/01/2015 12:16

My MIL has added raw chopped onions to her huge list of things that kill you if you eat them. Even choosing a simple salad in a restaurant means interrogating the waiting staff about the provenance, preparation and presentation of every single ingredient. I love her to bits but ordering food with her leaves me wanting to chew off my own hand.

SomewhereIBelong · 31/01/2015 12:34

Recently on the BBC news - so forgive me if it is wrong:

"Swallowing the occasional piece of chewing gum is unlikely to cause problems.

But if you are a regular user who swallows their gum every time you have it, the pieces could stick together and cause a painful blockage known as a bezoar, explains Vishal Saxena, a consultant gastroenterologist at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in London.

Bezoars normally pass out through the gut. If not, surgery or medication is required. "

dementedpixie · 31/01/2015 12:36

www.hoax-slayer.com/onions-magnet-bacteria.shtml - onions are fine (I love the hoax slayer site!)

Tzibeleh · 31/01/2015 12:42

Gosh, that must mean that JK Rowling is a doctor! I thought she'd invented bezoars for Harry Potter, but they're real after all. I wonder what Dr Rowling has to say on the matter of chopped onions and tinned tomatoes? (Pass the mandrake root, please.)

violetbunny · 31/01/2015 12:46

France are banning BPA as of this year. Manufacturers of canned food in France are therefore switching to cans with alternative lining. The thing is, nobody knows if the alternative is any better or worse than BPA...

Jellymum1 · 31/01/2015 12:48

but you are supposed to make onion soup and have chopped onions in your room when you are sick! so the onion thing is true...you can chop and eat, but not chop, store and then eat. you see

florascotia · 31/01/2015 12:50

Bezoars (from the stomachs of goats!) were prized in the Middle Ages /sixteenth century. They were believed to protect people from poison. The word bezoar means 'antidote'.
