tinned tomatoes one of the worst foods to eat

dhdjdbrjrkbr · 31/01/2015 11:55

Just seen someone post that tinned tomatoes should never be eaten due to the BPA and the acidity of tomatoes meaning it leaches alot and is not safe for children to eat.

I had no idea tinned food contained plastic, aibu to cut right down on them? Often go through 12 cans a fortnight :(

Tinned tomatoes are a great base for loads of dishes. I would have to see some very conclusive evidence regarding the dangers to stop using them.

dementedpixie · 31/01/2015 16:18

in what way was he right about bird flu?

bigbluestars · 31/01/2015 16:19

Everyone who avoids value brands is being duped.

Errol- ASDA and TESCO value range passata contain no added salt. It's only when you start to pay more that the additives begin. I am a huge fan of value ranges- I read labels closely=they are very often the processed foods that contain non of the crap that you find in higher price branded products.

Artandco · 31/01/2015 16:20

The passata we have from ocado def has no salt in it

We use passata where needed, and fresh tomatoes otherwise.

We don't buy plastic bottles due to same reasons.

noblegiraffe · 31/01/2015 16:22

demented we know he was right about bird flu because he wrote an article called 'I was right about bird flu'

I don't know exactly what he was right about because to know exactly what he thought about bird flu you needed to buy his $$$ book.

RosyAuroch · 31/01/2015 16:27

Passata in a glass bottle.

Scram · 31/01/2015 18:15

mercola is a homeopathic. therefore anything he says can be safely ignored.

MuttersDarkly · 31/01/2015 18:40

Ah, dear Gillian, where is she now I wonder?

In a darkened room, throwing darts at a picture of her fellow doctor Ben Goldacre's cat.

Possibly.

MrsFlorrick · 31/01/2015 18:48

Mutters. Gillian is alive and well here
gillianmckeith.com

no longer calls herself a Dr though. Wonder why? Wink

almondcakes · 31/01/2015 18:58

Scram, I don't believe in homeopathy, but as well as breast cancer charities and women's health organisations, the following organisations support a European ban on BPA:

The International Chemical Secretariat
European Environmental Bureau
The Centre for International Environmental Law
Health and Environmental Alliance
WWF European Policy Unit
France Nature Environnement
Inter Environnment Wallonie.

None of whom I think can be safely ignored.
France has already banned it from all food packaging and food utensils.

Tobyjugg · 31/01/2015 20:27

France has already banned it from all food packaging and food utensils

From which we can safely deduce that no BPA is manufactured in France.

Good point. People here do love to try to belittle others that they don't agree with

I have no experience of this OP, but I think some concerns have been raised on other threads this evening about the respective branding powers of Fruits and Vegetables. There are some concerns about the long term effects this may have the IT industry in particular.

Fishandjam · 31/01/2015 21:51

More about that Mercola twat here: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Mercola

bigbluestars · 01/02/2015 08:50

We have an NHS homeopathy clinic at our local health centre- the GPs frequently make referrals- it is very busy.
The homeopath who runs it is also a qualified GP.

"Yes and in the olden days people rarely made it over 40 and most children never made it to their first birthday. Your point?"

Evidence?

Average age 40 does not mean that it was rare for people to live beyond 40, especially in societies with high child mortality.

If you have a high rate of children dying before 10, then you would also have a lot living to 70 to produce an average 40.

(Of course, stats also can be used to show that divorce is associated with margarine consumption, which is why one has to be careful when unsubstantiated facts are chucked in).

dhdjdbrjrkbr · 01/02/2015 09:37

That wiki article shows his diet advice, hard to argue with what that.

Its just coming to the conclusion that tinned foods even tomatoes are procesed so probably wise to eat more fresh.

OP posts:
noblegiraffe · 01/02/2015 09:55

Why not get your diet advice and science info from someone who isn't also peddling a load of shit?

dhdjdbrjrkbr · 01/02/2015 09:59

I get it from a variety of sources! I've never bought anything off him.

When the NHS is still peddling low fat foods and diet drinks he makes more sense than them.

OP posts:
noblegiraffe · 01/02/2015 10:11

He's a crank and a quack. Posting links on here and saying 'he's right about eating fresh food' (well duh) is legitimising his shit and sending him traffic.

And people will assume you wear a tinfoil hat and don't vaccinate your kids to hear you speak approvingly of him.

dhdjdbrjrkbr · 01/02/2015 10:26

I find it a useful source.

He just posted on twitter about dry skin in winter articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2013/11/11/coconut-oil-for-skin.aspx?x_cid=20150131_tweet_coconut-oil-for-skin_twitterdoc

What's the flaw in that? Its just recommending coconut oil rather than petroleum based stuff.

OP posts:
noblegiraffe · 01/02/2015 10:37

Yeah, handily you can purchase coconut oil from his website alongside anti-vaccine hysteria.

2rebecca · 01/02/2015 10:44

If you read the stuff about him he isn't a medical doctor. He trained as a pharmacy technician so isn't even a pharmacist. He is very good at pr and bigging his prejudices and ideas up.
He doesn't have a statisticians approach to health risks though but a quack approach.
We're all going to die but it won't be the fault of the evil tinned tomatoes!

dhdjdbrjrkbr · 01/02/2015 10:46

Well I didn't see any adds for his coconut oil or saying he sold special stuff. He just recommended the product that most people have already.
