tinned tomatoes one of the worst foods to eat

dhdjdbrjrkbr · 31/01/2015 11:55

Just seen someone post that tinned tomatoes should never be eaten due to the BPA and the acidity of tomatoes meaning it leaches alot and is not safe for children to eat.

I had no idea tinned food contained plastic, aibu to cut right down on them? Often go through 12 cans a fortnight :(

MrsDeVere

Don't bother the op with your observations.

She has almonds to activate.

IAmAPaleontologist · 31/01/2015 14:45

In the olden days people didn't live beyond 40..........not true. The average life expectancy was low because of high rates of infant and child mortality. That is how averages work. High numbers of people dying young bring down the average. If you survived childhood you could expect to live to a pretty decent age.

Also, what do you eat to get through 12 tins of chopped tomatoes a week? I am intrigued.

shaska · 31/01/2015 15:00

I wasn't going to continue engaging but I'm too tickled by ancient tribes knowing all about how great activated almonds are. Just look at the water! It's proof of their advanced knowledge of the arcane science around phytic acid and enzyme inhibition!

or else, soaking things in water made them softer, which, if you had ancient tribe teeth, was probably quite a relief

Yes I do but until today I had no idea that tins contained BPA. It never occoured to me and I'm coming here for some balance because I follow more one sided people on twitter.

I just think they get a bad reputation. Neither fruit nor vegetables, so no IT company is ever going to use them for branding. In the middle ages people used to throw them at villains and oafs. So, I am pretty ambivalent about them, but if other people like them, then it doesn't bother me. They rubbish on toast though, makes everything soggy.

KindleFancy · 31/01/2015 15:34

I don't, but I can see how I could get through a lot.

I use 4 tins in a spag Bol or the sauce for meatballs (although I make these supersize, so have a few portions to freeze for dc too).

I put them in a cottage/shepherds pie and usually chuck a tin in if I've made a casserole.

So if I had a larger family and we had spag Bol, meatballs and two casseroles in a week I could use about 12...although as I'm typing this, I think I'd be sick of tomatoey foods after all that.

You really need to bin anyone who promotes Mercola as talking any sense.

"
FDA Warnings

In 2005, the FDA ordered Mercola and his Optimal Wellness Center to stop making illegal claims for products sold through his Web site [15]. The claims to which the FDA objected involved three products:

Living Fuel Rx, claimed to offer an "exceptional countermeasure" against cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, autoimmune diseases, etc.
Tropical Traditions Virgin Coconut Oil, claimed to reduce the risk of heart disease and has beneficial effects against Crohn's disease, irritable bowel syndrome, and many infectious agents
Chlorella, claimed to fight cancer and normalize blood pressure.
In 2006, the FDA sent Mercola and his center a second warning that was based on product labels collected during an inspection at his facility and on claims made on the Optimum Wellness Center Web site [16]. This time the claims to which the FDA objected involve four products:

Vibrant Health Research Chlorella XP, claimed to "help to virtually eliminate your risk of developing cancer in the future."
Fresh Shores Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, claimed to reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer, and degenerative diseases.
Momentum Health Products Vitamin K2, possibly useful in treating certain kinds of cancer and Alzheimer's disease.
Momentum Health Products Cardio Essentials Nattokinase NSK-SD, claimed to be "a much safer and effective option than aspirin and other pharmaceutical agents to treating heart disease."
The warning letters explained that the use of such claims in the marketing of these products violates the Federal Food Drug and Cosmetic Act, which bans unapproved claims for products that are intended for curing, mitigating, treating, or preventing of diseases. (Intended use can be established through product labels, catalogs, brochures, tapes, Web sites, or other circumstances surrounding the distribution of the product.)"

I only eat value tinned tomatoes- no plastic lining- we eat around 15 cans a week between us.

Canned tomatoes are a valuable foodstuff, full of lycopenes and other antioxidants, still a fair amount of vitamic C, and fibre.

A great food.

Bettybodybooboo · 31/01/2015 15:39

Love them in toast.

Rather drop dead happy Well fed and with a glass of wine in my hand than live till 90 ga ga and pissing myself in a home.

dhdjdbrjrkbr · 31/01/2015 15:39

Some of what he says has merit though. He was only sued over two products I think, he's responded on his website for both sides.

Anyway I did say 12 a fortnight.

Some of what he says has merit though.

That's how you get sucked in. Get you nodding along then turn up the bullshit dial to 11.

And 'only sued over two products'? did you read what he claimed his products could do? Eliminate your risk of getting cancer?? The man is dangerous and spins fear into money...for himself. He is massively wealthy.

Did he now. I did snigger just reading on his website 'find out the truth about who is profiting from the bird flu scare in my new $$$ book'. I rather suspect that he profited nicely from that too, as his book apparently peddled health cures that I'm sure are available from his website and may or may not be (I'm guessing not) FDA approved. He also said nothing ever came of the bird flu scare, just like previous threats 'like Ebola'. Hmm, he might need to revise his thinking on that one.

fatlazymummy · 31/01/2015 16:11

op latest research indicates that dementia (alzheimers) is linked to diabetes type 2, which is linked to obesity, as I'm sure you're already aware of.

bigbluestars · 31/01/2015 16:12

passatta- too thick, too much like ketchup, too sweet- doesn't have the same acidity of tinned tomatoes.

Artanco- "comedy glass bottles" Grin- made me laugh!

ErrolTheDragon · 31/01/2015 16:12

All the brands of passata I've ever looked at have added salt. So if like me you've got someone in the family who has to be really careful about sodium levels, then anything with added salt isn't the best option. If you usually add salt anyway then fine (if you don't mind the cost of course)

LIZS · 31/01/2015 16:15

Don't cans contain aluminium - surely that leeches through to the contents in the same way ? It isn't so long since we used lead in tankards, flasks etc
