to think sharing explicit anti-meat eating photos on Facebook is completely abhorrent and unnecessary? [Title edited by MNHQ]

I'm sat here eating a naice ham sandwich, scrolling through & minding my own business when WHAM, a picture of a sleeping puppy being carved like a joint of meat on my newsfeed. Poster is an old school friend and a (recent) vegetarian.

I mean seriously, I don't share photos of great big juicy steaks to promote my status as a meat-eater? Hmm

Siennasun it's because it's a complete puppy. As I said earlier, I would be equally as disturbed had it have been a complete cow, lamb, chicken, etc.

This is what I don't get.
I'm assuming people don't have a fit of the vapours when they chop stewing steak up for a stew (if they eat meat).

ThatBloodyWoman · 30/01/2015 15:55

But,Wii,the chook you presumably eat was whole once.
Someone chopped its head off.
I think you should know that!

LokiBear · 30/01/2015 15:56

I agree with you op. I'm a vegetarian, but I hate 'shock' propaganda like that.

WiiUnfit · 30/01/2015 16:04

ThatBloodyWoman I am well aware of that. I fear you're missing the point.

pbwer · 30/01/2015 16:08

Alpaca tastes amazing, Shame they only grow them for wool in this country.

Siennasun · 30/01/2015 16:11

I'm missing the point too Confused
The ham in your sandwich was probably, partially once a complete pig?
Would you not go to a hog roast? How do you feel about shrimp?

ThatBloodyWoman · 30/01/2015 16:16

Perhaps I am Wii!
I find it confuddling! When I've skinned bunnies before and gutted them, they've been furry, complete, cute, and sometimes even warm.
I'm sure they no less feel fear and pain than a puppy!
I don't get how some feel we're entitled to be shielded from the realities of eating animals.
I simply don't understand.

FuckOffGroundhog · 30/01/2015 16:18

Sorry, but you do know how meat gets to you right? If you have a problem with it, don't eat it.

I'm much more concerned about the pig that was killed's day than you being put off your sandwich.

As a vegetarian who regularly gets dumb comments, including.".oh vegetarians eat formed stuff so they don't have to think about what they are eating.."

oh the fucking irony. Yeah cause chickens come in nugget form.

FuckOffGroundhog · 30/01/2015 16:19

Oh and people constantly share pics of their frankly god awful looking food on FB.

FightOrFlight · 30/01/2015 16:23

Abby I understand that you are trying to highlight that the life of one animal (cow, pig, sheep etc.) is just as valuable as another (dog, cat etc.) but I feel the way you are going about it is counterproductive. The bacon sandwich reponse is what you will always get when you try and tackle this issue in a confrontational manner.

Can I ask you how long you have been vegan?

Most vegetarians and vegans have moved from an omnivorous diet. Most of us have eaten meat at one point or another in our lives. Yes there are some people who have been vegetarian or vegan since birth but the majority were once meat eaters.

We all had our own, personal 'light bulb' moments but we can't expect others to respond in the same way based on our own experiences.

Calling people out for eating meat rarely gets a positive response. You can't change a lifetime of dietary habit/culture/whatever with insulting comments.

You can't/won't change the way people think about food animals by insulting and demeaning them. All that will do is make them more aggressively omnivorous - eg a PP making a point of eating blue steak in front of a preachy vegan/veggie. That's pretty childish to be honest, sort of a 'nerr nerr I'm going to eat more meat just to spite you' but it's also a very common response when they feel people are telling them what they should or shouldn't do.

You need to take a different approach in order to get a positive response.

The puppy picture will have been computer generated, just like the 'humans are made of meat' one with the sliced up fingers (very realistic and boak making).

FFS

I know how my food makes it to my plate. My issue is with this image, not vegetarians, vegans or the bloody Pope.

it's ok to eat pigs, who happen to be v intelligent, loving, sweet, affectionate characters,

Really? The ones I've met have been bastards!

And yay to veganism, it'll certainly boost breastfeeding rates, although boo to all the dead human babies, apparently there is a lot of people out there that can't breastfeed ........

FuckOffGroundhog · 30/01/2015 16:30

The vast majority of the worlds population will never be vegetarian.

I disagree Tyzer. We can't as a world continue as we are. It's destroying the environment.

Brilliant. All the vegan parents that can't BF now just let their children die do they? Hmm

FuckOffGroundhog · 30/01/2015 16:31

All babies with milk allergies too I guess

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 30/01/2015 16:32

Future generations will look back on 2015 in disgust that we were still killing animals just because we had been conditioned to do so, that they tasted nice, and that it was just the way we were raised. And they will thank the vegans of 2015 for speaking out, and trying to raise awareness

This is utterly bizarre.

it's because it's a complete puppy. As I said earlier, I would be equally as disturbed had it have been a complete cow, lamb, chicken, etc.

This is also really bizarre.

There is no sensible way to draw a line between "food" animals and pet animals. If eating an animal is ok, then eating all animals is ok. And animals may or may not be "persons" but people need to respect the fact that an animal has died, probably not very nicely, for their "naice ham sandwich".

And enough of the vegan baiting. We are not all bonkers.

FightOrFlight · 30/01/2015 16:33

This is the sliced fingers picture I was referring to.

I've seen it posted as a response to the "if we weren't meant to eat animals why are they made of meat?" comment that veggies always have throw at them. Point being that humans are made of meat too but cannibalism isn't seen as normal/socially acceptable.

WARNING: Could put you off your sandwich

And some of us are, but we keep it quiet instead of advertising it on t'internet Grin

Oh don't be so silly. But surely I don't need to point out that the vegan ideal of no dependence on animals has flaws? Huge great massive big ones? It will never happen.

ThatBloodyWoman · 30/01/2015 16:46

I agree ItsAll that people need to respect that an animal has died for that ham sandwich.
And disconnecting entirely from the animals journey prior to the chilled shelf in the supermarket doesn't do that.
If you're an adult,if you can eat it,you should at least be able to look at it while its guts are being removed imo.

HappyGoLuckyGirl · 30/01/2015 16:56

Abbey, in the west dogs are kept as family pets who are looked after and given medical treatment throughout their lives, cherished and allowed to sleep in the same room, sometimes bed, as their owners. They are loved.

Cows, pigs and sheep are bred for food. There is a difference.

cakedcrusader · 30/01/2015 17:00

Abby , you're wasting your time trying to explain it here! People know but they actually don't care. Exploitation and murder is only disgusting if we actually have to see it don't you know?!

Op and loads of others yabu!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 30/01/2015 17:00

Bit that's the whole point of the controversial image!

Its a completely artificial distinction. They are all mammals. They all contain meat. Some we choose to eat and some we don't. There is no logical reason for those choices.

Skinning and eating a puppy is no more or less repugnant than skinning or eating any other animal. Just because something is bred for meat does not mean it is somehow less an animal.

ThatBloodyWoman · 30/01/2015 17:01

My chooks are loved, given medical treatment if needed, and wander at will in the same garden (sometimes in the same house) as my family.
They are fussed over, given names, and have their own little personal quirks and likes and dislikes....
