to think sharing explicit anti-meat eating photos on Facebook is completely abhorrent and unnecessary? [Title edited by MNHQ]

I'm sat here eating a naice ham sandwich, scrolling through & minding my own business when WHAM, a picture of a sleeping puppy being carved like a joint of meat on my newsfeed. Poster is an old school friend and a (recent) vegetarian.

I mean seriously, I don't share photos of great big juicy steaks to promote my status as a meat-eater? Hmm

No, French, I was not. I was pointing out that people speaking out against injustices DO change things. That times change. We look back on the times when slavery was legal, when racial segregation was acceptable, when women did not have the vote - and we are appalled. Yet it took people to make a stand against those things, didn't it, to get things changed. And now we see slavery as abhorrent, we view women not having the vote as very backwards. And so it will be re the consumption of animals. Future generations will look back on 2015 in disgust that we were still killing animals just because we had been conditioned to do so, that they tasted nice, and that it was just the way we were raised. And they will thank the vegans of 2015 for speaking out, and trying to raise awareness, of trying to get people to see that pigs are equal to dogs.

OfaFrenchMind · 30/01/2015 14:39

Trying to tie together meat-eating, wife beating and pedophilia...
This passive aggressive post is so ridiculous that it made me laugh after a while.
This is why I will never take you seriously, and have little to no respect for militant vegans (the other do what they want, their life their choice).

That biscuit is for you Abby, and is 100% vegan.

The vast majority of the worlds population will never be vegetarian.

crazypenguin · 30/01/2015 14:42

So people that eat meat never campaign for what they believe in because they are morally bankrupt?
hmm... Hmm

crazypenguin · 30/01/2015 14:44

By the way WiiUnfit you are my kinda person!!
Smile
Bacon sarnie?

OfaFrenchMind · 30/01/2015 14:45

People in the future will look at 2015 and do what? Be horrified that we were actually living according to our biology?

Should we be so loathing our own nature? Strip us from all modern trappings, factory, international commerce roads, Juice bars and fad diets... Can you survive in the natural environment you want so much to protect? Can you live on roots and leaves alone? Will you be able to reproduce, raise children and see them live over 30?

WiiUnfit · 30/01/2015 14:46

I'd love one crazypenguin Grin

Abby, animal personhood and the like are long argued philosophical questions, which can be debated in a fair way, but your horrible post above is completely unhelpful and inflammatory. I do agree some animals have achieved personhood and of course all animals have some form of intelligence, and it is a personal ethical question. You have strong views but seem unable to accept that others have actually considered the question and aren't just mindless barbarians.

A helpful perspective on personhood in philosophy in relation to why we value humans: here

I eat a mixture of Quorn and meat, depending on how I feel and I'm a bit picky annoyingly. My best mate did philosophy and politics, and he decided that after writing an essay answering whether animals were persons he did become veggie. I always supported him and never mocked him for making his decision that way, and he had previously loved meat. Worldwide meat production will not grind to a total halt overnight - it is very environmentally taxing and some of it is indeed grim, but there are other ways to do something about poor farm/slaughter conditions. Guilting individuals instead of lobbying isn't really going to work.

What utter bollocks.

Siennasun · 30/01/2015 15:15

I think YABU.
Facebook exists for this purpose - there's all manner of crap on my newsfeed. People share stuff they agree with. If her post put you off your ham, that's your problem. Do you seriously expect everyone to agree with the same stuff you do?
I don't eat steak (or meat in general) but there often posts and pictures of meat. People eat meat around me every day. It doesn't put me off my food because I couldn't give a shit what anyone else eats.
YA also BU for using the word "naice".

WiiUnfit · 30/01/2015 15:25

Sienna, I disagree that Facebook exists to post such horrific images, unless I've been using it incorrectly for years to keep in touch with friends & family.

I also don't expect people to have the same beliefs as me, I just don't want graphic pictures thrust at me. Hmm

The "naice" was an obvious Mumsnetism.

ThatBloodyWoman · 30/01/2015 15:36

YABU.
I'm fed up with the huge disconnect when it comes to food and how it gets on the plate.

Siennasun · 30/01/2015 15:37

In your opinion it's horrific. i don't really see how it's different to someone posting a picture of the roast dinner they've just cooked.

I think it's massively annoying and boring when people preach, about anything really but especially about what other people eat. But she's not thrusting anything at you. She's just posting something on FB that you don't agree with. Really don't get why you are so bothered.

ourglass · 30/01/2015 15:40

God there are some nutters about on MN at the moment.

WiiUnfit · 30/01/2015 15:40

A picture of a furry "complete" puppy curled up and being carved is nowhere near the same a photo of a cooked chicken. That's why I'm bothered. It's vile.

OP posts:
SoMuchForSubtlety · 30/01/2015 15:43

See, this is why I stopped supporting animal charities (and I used to work for one). Animal liberationists are bonkers AND also irritatingly holier than thou.

I think if you're going to try to hold the high moral ground you should at least attempt to make your arguments logically sound, otherwise you just come across as a zealot and everyone knows not to listen to them.

ThatBloodyWoman · 30/01/2015 15:43

Why?
I didn't see the picture.
Was the puppy uncooked?
I don't get it Confused

WiiUnfit · 30/01/2015 15:45

The puppy was curled up on a platter with slices being carved off it's rump, ThatBloodyWoman.

OP posts:
ThatBloodyWoman · 30/01/2015 15:48

I'm assuming it was computer generated,or the puppy wasn't alive then?
Sorry, just trying to get my head round it!

Siennasun · 30/01/2015 15:49

why? I genuinely don't get it. People eat complete roast piglets or fish etc, etc.
Is it because it's complete or because it's a dog or because it's not cooked?
I grew up in a country where it is normal to eat dogs so maybe that's why your rant seems so illogical to me. Confused

crazypenguin · 30/01/2015 15:50

I'm sick of people trying to "explain how it is" and "educate" me.
It's patronising.
Most of the militant veggies I know have actually gone back to meat. I also know vegans that feed their children meat as they feel it is the easiest way to get protein into them and they don't wish to force their beliefs on them.
I have more respect for these people than anyone that tries to force unwanted information on me.

Greydog · 30/01/2015 15:52

I'be been a veggie for years - my choice. But I've been subjected to horrible abuse by some meat eaters! No idea why as I've never tried to "convert" anyone. But I do think that people need to know what their food is. So many youngsters don't seem to realise that the burger they've eaten was once alive. I admit to laughing at Tescos Farm to Fork, because I very much doubt there will be any mention of slaughtering animals (may be wrong?) In case kiddies are upset by finding out that little lamb is being served in mint sauce! And, if you'll eat a cow - well why not a dog?
