I'm sat here eating a naice ham sandwich, scrolling through & minding my own business when WHAM, a picture of a sleeping puppy being carved like a joint of meat on my newsfeed. Poster is an old school friend and a (recent) vegetarian.

I mean seriously, I don't share photos of great big juicy steaks to promote my status as a meat-eater? Hmm

carnists.

Arf.

OfaFrenchMind · 30/01/2015 14:15

Carnists. I feel like Hannibal Lecter now. But I get I could look worse than Mads Mikkelsen, so I am cool with it :)

AbbyCadabby · 30/01/2015 14:17

But you force your beliefs on us - meat advertising is everywhere. Why should I have to see that? I am as appalled by an animal being carved up as ham, as I am puppy meat, yet I am subjected to meat adverts day in and day out. Yet you don't seem to mind this. You only mind when it is a dog. Why?

WiiUnfit · 30/01/2015 14:18

Carnist. Hmm.

I hate it when people think all veggies do this. I don't! I don't care what others eat, I wsh ppl felt the same way about what I eat. 24 years of being judged as a vegetarian it does get dull

NoImSpartacus · 30/01/2015 14:20

AbbyCadabby totally agree. We are a nation of utter hypocrites, it's ok to eat pigs, who happen to be v intelligent, loving, sweet, affectionate characters, but not dogs. Both are animals, both are cute, both have feelings, souls, thoughts, senses, pain receptors, emotions, etc etc etc. but for some cultural reason, its not ok to eat dogs but its ok to eat pigs. Maybe they taste better, who knows. Humans are weird.

WiiUnfit · 30/01/2015 14:21

Abby, I don't force my beliefs on anyone. I am not responsible for what companies do, I cannot control what they do or don't show. This woman deliberately shared this image in an attempt to guilt-trip "carnists" like me.

This image bothers me in the same way it would if it were any other animal be carved up in their 'unprepared' state. There is no need for it.

Abby - don't pretend you don't understand, it makes you look silly.

Most people in the West eat meat. Most eat farmed animals. You have to accept that, no amount of ranting from you is going to change it.

NotSayingImBatman · 30/01/2015 14:21

Humans are omnivorous Abby, that means we're supposed to eat meat.

Also, what do you suppose would happen to pigs, chickens and beef cattle if everyone went vegetarian? And chickens and dairy cattle as well if we're all going vegan. Do you think farmers would keep them as pets?

NotSayingImBatman · 30/01/2015 14:24

Also, I suppose the distinction between why we in the west are happy to eat pigs but not dogs, it's probably because dogshave served us for thousands of years. They've protected us, hunted with us, herded our livestock.

Pigs have done nothing but be completely fucking delicious.

AbbyCadabby · 30/01/2015 14:25

Spartacus, indeed. Most have been conditioned to think eating pigs is acceptable, yet dogs are off limits. Yet they won't question why, and persist with thinking ham is naice and perfectly fine to consume. Most people do not care about animals, they just like to think that they do.
People who eat dogs think dogs taste lovely. It is pure habit, and social conditioning.

For the record, I'd eat dog. I wouldn't eat my pet though. Same as I wouldn't eat a pet pig.
I have skinned rabbits (despite loving snuggling with Ickle bunnies) I wouldn't have a problem killing my dinner.
Grin

Tyzer85 · 30/01/2015 14:27

Pigs are delicious, fact. I'd rather not eat a dog as I've not been conditioned that way.

SoMuchForSubtlety · 30/01/2015 14:27

YANBU.
Proselytising is annoying.

crazypenguin · 30/01/2015 14:28

Bacon... I'd give up chocolate and sex for bacon.

AbbyCadabby · 30/01/2015 14:28

Mintyy, I am not the one eating ham, bacon and beef out of habit. I have made the connection - that all animals deserve not to suffer because of my choices. Yet I'm silly. Ok.
I am not ranting. I am explaining. And people like me DO change the world. Veganism is on the increase.
People like me were the ones who spoke out against women not having the vote. We changed that. We were the ones who spoke out against slavery. We changed that. You get the point. Change is happening regarding animals.

Batman, I suppose the world would be overrun with pigs and sheep. OR, we would just stop breeding them to buggery, yes, I think the latter is the most likely, do you not?

crazypenguin · 30/01/2015 14:29

So veggies got the vote? Hmm

WiiUnfit · 30/01/2015 14:31

Vegans stopped slavery? Hmm

AbbyCadabby · 30/01/2015 14:31

I don’t have any problem with your way of life. I respect your point of view. You are entitled to your opinion, and I am entitled to mine.

Don’t get me wrong. I admire people with strong moral values. I just don’t like them being shoved down my throat.

I, for example, see nothing whatsoever wrong with slavery. Some people were born to serve others. It’s just the way it is. You don’t have to own anyone, if you don’t want to. I don’t take any issue with that. But don’t tell me that I can’t.

And don’t tell me that I shouldn’t hit my woman when I have to. I don’t tell you that you have to hit yours. It doesn’t bother me one way or the other. If you want to abstain from hitting your wife, that’s a personal choice. But don’t tell me that I should.

I live my life according to my own values. I understand that we all see things differently, and I embrace the diversity that makes people individual.

I’m sick of self-righteous people going on about things like how they think it’s wrong for adults to have sex with minors. You might think that children shouldn’t be forced into sexual submission, but that doesn’t mean I have to see it that way. What right do you have to tell me what I should and shouldn’t do? What’s so bad about nonconsensual sex anyway? Rape might be considered wrong by some, but that’s not the case for everyone. Non-rapists shouldn’t expect the rest of us to live according to their rules.

What business is it of yours?

So don’t tell me how to think, or what to eat, or what to wear, or how to live. Don’t attack me with your accusations about right and wrong, justice and injustice… Those concepts are open to interpretation, and no one has any right to assume moral authority over anyone else. Just do your own thing… Go about your life the way you think you should.

You believe that we ought to live without oppressing other animals. Great, good for you.

You believe that we shouldn’t breed sentient beings into existence for the purpose of exploiting them, and that it’s immoral to use violence to bend them to our will. You believe that branding and castration and mutilation of other body parts is inexcusable. You believe that it’s wrong to exploit the female reproductive system, to snatch newborn babies from crying mothers, and to slaughter infants with umbilical cords still attached. You believe that it’s a barbaric and foul practice to chew and swallow flesh and blood, and that skin ripped from the back of one should not be used to dress the body of another. You believe that these are archaic practices that wouldn’t exist in a truly civilized society.

You believe that 56 billion horrifying deaths every year is morally reprehensible, especially as this ongoing massacre occurs for no purpose other than to fulfill the human appetite for specific tastes and textures. You believe that one person’s desires and preferences shouldn’t override another’s basic moral rights.

I get it, I really do. And I respect that you live according to your principles. But you need to have respect for me. You can’t force your beliefs on others. No one is in any position to decide what’s right and wrong for the rest of us, so for God’s sake, please…

Don’t tell me what to do.

AbbyCadabby · 30/01/2015 14:32

No. People like me who spoke out about injustices of the time. But I think you knew that.

WiiUnfit · 30/01/2015 14:33

I'm sorry, did you just compare eating meat to condoning slavery and paedophilia, Abby?

OP posts:
NotSayingImBatman · 30/01/2015 14:34

Abby, you do know that there's a difference between cows and people, don't you?

Fuck, you do, don't you?!

Mintyy · 30/01/2015 14:34

Dear Lord. Absolutely impossible to take a single word you say seriously!

OfaFrenchMind · 30/01/2015 14:34

AbbyCadabby So you are comparing Feminism with Veganism... Grin Love it when people got their head so far up their seat.
Keep on fighting your basic human nature, that's admirable. For me, I guess I will be very reactionary and keep on being an animal, eating other animals with no regrets.

SoMuchForSubtlety · 30/01/2015 14:39

This might help you Abby.
