I've really tried to get into to lidl to help with the budget but I find the quality hit and miss and its just like a glorified corner shop with a tiny range. I went away with more on my list that I couldn't buy than I could!

No white or pink grapefruit
No purple sprout broccoli
No vanilla extract
No cinnamon
No cumin
No bay leaves
No galangal
No French parsley
No cumin
No scottch bonnet
No polenta
No freeka
No non stalted pistachio
No tri colour pasta
No gluten free bread

And the list goes on, I don't know how on earth they think they can get middle class people to shop there

What is this waitrose place you all talk of? Confused

I jest, I've been to one 'in that London' Sainsbury's and M&S is deemed middle class here.

Personally, to mix it up a bit.. Oooh get me! Shock I shop at the local farm shop, it's fab and good quality, it sells meat, deli stuff, wine, veg ect and I buy certain bits from b&m bargains and pound land, and the supermarkets.

Don't rate lidl I actually spent more last time I went there, much prefer doing the farm shop/bits from other places thing

No pretentious middle-class foodie twats and cheap food too. Shopping in Lidl really is a win-win.

I haven't got a fucking clue what class I am, but I like this thread as I've learnt that I can use ginger as a galangal substitute which is good to know.

I once got ID'd buying vanilla extract in Morrisons . It does contain a tiny amount of alcohol but you'd need an awful lot of them to get pissed.

Maybe my area is full of extremely wealthy and resourceful teenagers who have spotted a loophole in alcohol purchasing regulations.

You couldn't get round our Lidl in 15 minutes, Idiotdh. It's like a giant food version of a jumble sale, iyswim. There absolutely no logic to the layout - e.g. some soft drinks are in one aisle, the rest scattered randomly about the shop. Other products are the same. And don't get me started on the lack of space at the checkouts ...

Dawndonnaagain · 26/01/2015 09:02

Oh, op didn't come back, what a surprise. Hmm

OnlyLovers · 26/01/2015 09:16

Loving Hmm the reverse snobbery/working-class chips on shoulders here.

And those saying 'Oh just go to your lovely local Asian supermarket' are just as bad. Not everyone has one.

There's nowt wrong with vanilla extract, BTW.

Idiotdh · 26/01/2015 09:20

Maybe OP works for Waitrose?

I like the checkout mayhem.. Much prefer it to being asked if I want a bag, 5 p or 10p, have I had a good day, do I want cash back, oh you've got a voucher, do you have a points card conversation type interaction. I like to think I can manage my own shopping and groceries!

Idiotdh · 26/01/2015 09:21

Would have to travel two hours to start looking for a Chinese or Asian supermarket from here

bigbluestars · 26/01/2015 09:22

Are carrier bags free in England?

OnlyLovers · 26/01/2015 09:43

bigblue, there's no countrywide legislation. Some shops charge for them and some don't. You get a 5p refund in Whole Foods Market if you use your own bags and none of theirs; I don't know if other shops do this too.

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 26/01/2015 10:22

I think we will have to pay for carriers in England from October this year.

krolletRodtHar · 26/01/2015 10:47

I can't believe UK some shops still giving away free plastic bags. I've spent a fortune on bags for life.

Have they brought in the getting cheaper water if you bring back the water bottle yet?

OnlyLovers · 26/01/2015 11:15

I think all shops ought to charge for plastic bags too.

Didn't know about the water thing! That sounds good.

StarsOfTrackAndField · 26/01/2015 11:22

They do charge in Scotland, ahead of you backward buggers down south (again!)

SaucyMare · 26/01/2015 11:43

i think if you shouldn't have to pay for bags for the shopping you want, the supermarket should pay for the bags for the extra crap you buy because they tempted you with bogoffs

bigbluestars · 26/01/2015 12:29

It's a pain having to pay for bags. I always reused my carriers around the house, for dirty jobs, storage, bagging up cat litter etc. I am now having to buy extra plastic bags to use for these jobs.

StarsOfTrackAndField · 26/01/2015 12:32

Or get three or four bags for life and use them? Maximum cost of a couple of pounds.
