no one middle class can exist on a lidl shop

I've really tried to get into to lidl to help with the budget but I find the quality hit and miss and its just like a glorified corner shop with a tiny range. I went away with more on my list that I couldn't buy than I could!

No white or pink grapefruit
No purple sprout broccoli
No vanilla extract
No cinnamon
No cumin
No bay leaves
No galangal
No French parsley
No cumin
No scottch bonnet
No polenta
No freeka
No non stalted pistachio
No tri colour pasta
No gluten free bread

And the list goes on, I don't know how on earth they think they can get middle class people to shop there

OP posts:

Definitely huge tub of Pistachios non salted just scoop them out
Also better veg..more like market veg but cheap and v fresh

Did you accidentally go to Kwiksave?

writtenguarantee · 25/01/2015 20:57

I should add I live in London and see similarly great local veg shops all over.

TalkinPeace · 25/01/2015 20:58

I'm just waiting for the three Lidls I frequent to restock the big jars of Anchovies.
But I'm sorted for pimentos and grilled aubergine in olive oil for a few months.

GreenPetal94 · 25/01/2015 20:59

If you want to save money on groceries then don't buy the items on your list and sub basics, e.g. normal pasta.

However I would agree cumin is an essential item, but then I am prob middle class but I only shop in Tesco.

anothernumberone · 25/01/2015 21:04

I adore Lidl, in and out in 30 minutes with 90% of what is needed then once a month get the other 10% in another supermarket for twice the price unless you use cumin in everything ever that you have cooked for the week a weeks shop takes half the time.

Idiotdh · 25/01/2015 21:04

I cook quite boring stuff and don't use Freeka Polenta or Scotch Bonnet . My Lidl shop seems to cost about forty quid and I just make masses of soup and casseroles

Idiotdh · 25/01/2015 21:05

Sacks of potatoes ..they're my kinda thing

Mousefinkle · 25/01/2015 21:05

I agree and I'm not middle class, I don't think... maybe I am and didn't realise.

Went once, never again. Ended up spending £50 in there, fresh stuff went off after two days and there was a much smaller amount in the containers than other supermarkets so had to buy three punnets of cherries for example to get the amount I needed... And they didn't sell half of our shopping list anyway so had to spend about £70 on the rest in tesco thus saving NOTHING. In fact we spent more that week because we had to replace the stuff that went off.

We're veggie so things we noticed: no meat alternatives, also noticed the lack of cumin and turmeric, no almond milk (only dairy free milk was their own brand soy but own brand soy tends to be shit in coffee), no dairy free spread, no organic eggs, we also love tricoloured (rainbow as DC call it) pasta so that as well, no wholemeal burger baps and there was a few other things I've forgotten but that seemed like basic things IMO to have that they didn't. We also like Nakd bars and obviously they don't stock those.

Just a big bag of wank. Polenta is pretty gross though Wink. I think it was bigged up too much by people we know and we just felt really rather deflated.

Moanranger · 25/01/2015 21:06

I went to Lidl as a test with my extensive shopping list & got everything on it. Even vanilla extract. I am middle class, I guess, but my tastes aren't as rarified as OP. Couldn't get Freekah at local Sainsbury's either, & polenta is something of a challenge. Not much brand choice at Lidl but v good value & I think quality is good.
I only go to Waitrose for Dorset Farms cereals, but last time I went to Lidl, they had a job lot of these - various porridges, mueslis & granola so for £1! What's not to like?

Iveabsolutelynofekkingideadoi · 25/01/2015 21:09

Oh darling this list screams Nouveau riche.

Ps I thought it was tri-color? Hey ho whatever suits you I suppose.

GlitzAndGigglesx · 25/01/2015 21:10

My nearest Lidl has many middle class shoppers going in with their Waitrose bags to carry it all out Grin.

I love Lidl I find things I didn't even know existed. Their freshly baked croissants are delivious and soo cheap compared to other shops. And their spinach and cheese pasties are equally beautiful for only 50p!!!!!! FIFTY PENCE!!!!!

WhereIsMyFurryHat · 25/01/2015 21:13

My lidl (in a naice area, the middle classes here LOVE lidl) has most of those things apart from galangal.

WTF is French parsley?!? Is it even a thing.

mickeyfartpants · 25/01/2015 21:13

You must be mental if do decide to buy all that in Waitrose instead. You can get kilo bags of the stuff in my tesco world food aisle / turkish food shop for pence.

Polenta is nasty so all in all, YABU.

WhereDoAllTheCalculatorsGo · 25/01/2015 21:14

Grin at German pickled things in jars

KarmaViolet · 25/01/2015 21:14

Tesco sell freekeh.

WhereIsMyFurryHat · 25/01/2015 21:16

Also, why would you need Freekha AND gluten free bread?!? That makes no sense.

Iveabsolutelynofekkingideadoi · 25/01/2015 21:17

Well spotted furryhat

QueenofLouisiana · 25/01/2015 21:19

I don't live near a Lidl Sad. Can't say I spotted freekeh or galangal when I did my Ocado shop yesterday- clearly I am not middle class to know I needed it.

Goldenbear · 25/01/2015 21:20

What 'middleclass', I thought it was just the 'elite' and the 'rest of us' now?

southeastastra · 25/01/2015 21:21

my lidl is five minutes away yet i only get bread and wine in there.

krolletRodtHar · 25/01/2015 21:21

you can get gluten free bread in my local aldi but i'm not in the UK.

part of being middle class is sucking it up without a murmur of discontent. (in my book)

VivaLeBeaver · 25/01/2015 21:21

Lidl do the best museli in the world.

So I can forgive them for not having an extensive stock.

I get my fruit and veg in the local greengrocers or farm shop. Spices, herbs from the Asian grocers.

nevergooglebrandybutter · 25/01/2015 21:22

The lidl I go to in Dartmouth (very naice) is great, but it doesn't sell san pellegrino. Blush

NapoleonsNose · 25/01/2015 21:23

I luffs Lidl. You can get most of OP's list in our local one, except the freekah and galangal whatever they are. moanranger, I'm sure I read an article not very long ago about Dorset cereals making the Lidl Simply Sumptuous muesli. I'll try and find the link and then you could abandon Waitrose alltogether!

NapoleonsNose · 25/01/2015 21:24

Here it is.
