I've really tried to get into to lidl to help with the budget but I find the quality hit and miss and its just like a glorified corner shop with a tiny range. I went away with more on my list that I couldn't buy than I could!

No white or pink grapefruit
No purple sprout broccoli
No vanilla extract
No cinnamon
No cumin
No bay leaves
No galangal
No French parsley
No cumin
No scottch bonnet
No polenta
No freeka
No non stalted pistachio
No tri colour pasta
No gluten free bread

And the list goes on, I don't know how on earth they think they can get middle class people to shop there

Go, don't go.
Why is it such an emotive thing the choice of supermarkets?
I dislike the prices of waitrose, but it really doesn't give me enough rage to start a thread. Guess what, I just don't go.

SacredHeart · 25/01/2015 21:32

if they didn't how could they prove they are more worthy than other people?

If a person brags in the forest and no one hears it are they really better than you?

FreudiansSlipper · 25/01/2015 21:32

who buys freeka and scottch bonnet from supermarkets Confused

far better quality at shops that sell ethnic food, often run by Turkish or Asian shop owners

along with spices, herbs fresh and dry, vine leaves and olives

for half the price or less but not presented so prettily

tri colour pasta is so 80's I thought I was very sophisticated eating it Café Pasta

Vijac · 25/01/2015 21:51

What's working with tri colour pasta everyone? It's my very favourite! Seriously, I like the green bits best.

Idiotdh · 25/01/2015 21:55

Tri the price too

Moanranger · 25/01/2015 21:58

Napoleon Thanks !

ouryve · 25/01/2015 22:03

Must have taken you ages to look up all those supposedly exotic foods, OP.

Though you misspelt freekeh

reallyneedmoresleep · 25/01/2015 22:05

I think the OP has been inspired by the "this girl can" advert. Y'know "get your freeka.....get your freeka..."

MooMaid · 25/01/2015 22:05

What a pointless thread and, unless I missed it, OP hasn't been back?

Idiotdh · 25/01/2015 22:20

Define ' Exist'

Stratter5 · 25/01/2015 22:22

No galangal, no scotch bonnets, no, GF, no freekah stuff. Everything else, including the tri colour pasta, is stocked in my Lidls. The fruit and veg is significantly cheaper and fresher than the other supermarkets, and the parking spaces are wide enough for me to park my 4x4 in.

Better class of car in them too, compared to Tescos next door. I much prefer Lidls, and I'm not going to cry over a lack of scotch bonnets if I can buy 10 cans of tomatoes for £3.10.

Damnautocorrect · 25/01/2015 22:30

Mine has a lot of your list but the spices. I do a top up sainsburys shop every two weeks or so. But I will up that now I know how little they pay their farmers for milk.

Idiotdh · 25/01/2015 22:43

Anyway Lidl is just a normal shop where you can go round in fifteen minutes for everything you need, that's what I like about it.

mindthegap79 · 25/01/2015 22:53

You don't have a bay tree in your garden? sends withering look

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 25/01/2015 23:07

What's galangal? Can I sprinkle it on my Pot Noodle?

TwoLittleTerrors · 25/01/2015 23:13

Galangal is a type of ginger. It's literally 'south ginger' in Chinese. It's not exotic at all. But then my cupboards has sweeten wheat paste, fermented tofu cubes, toasted sesame paste, dried shrimps etc. All of which I have never seen in a cookbook written on non Asian cooking. Galangal is much more common. Like shrimp pastes and mirin which I expect you can find in waitrose.

Chippednailvarnish · 25/01/2015 23:22

Galangal is what happens to your toes when you get frostbite.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 25/01/2015 23:30

Chipped Grin

Misspickle1 · 25/01/2015 23:37

Maybe you just don't live in a very middle class area.
My lidl stocks just about everything on your list.
But then its probably a richer area.
Smile

Chippednailvarnish · 25/01/2015 23:39

Yuck what is that picture chipped? It looks like King Tuts mummified penis! Is that the latest middle class cooking trend?

Chippednailvarnish · 25/01/2015 23:56

It's galangal or Scott of the Antarctic's toes...

Verbena37 · 26/01/2015 00:02

Don't forget that Lidl is German and they like to sell seasonal produce. Perhaps some of the fruit and veg isn't is season?

Summerisle1 · 26/01/2015 00:05

Have a Twix, love.
