no one middle class can exist on a lidl shop

I've really tried to get into to lidl to help with the budget but I find the quality hit and miss and its just like a glorified corner shop with a tiny range. I went away with more on my list that I couldn't buy than I could!

No white or pink grapefruit
No purple sprout broccoli
No vanilla extract
No cinnamon
No cumin
No bay leaves
No galangal
No French parsley
No cumin
No scottch bonnet
No polenta
No freeka
No non stalted pistachio
No tri colour pasta
No gluten free bread

And the list goes on, I don't know how on earth they think they can get middle class people to shop there

Ignoring any weird class issues, as I haven't a clue what class I am, I think I'd struggle to do a whole shop in Lidl/Aldi, though they are great for some things. We live a couple of minutes walk from an Aldi, so use it like a corner shop, for odds and ends between shops. Everything is cheap and good quality, but the choice is more limited (than at Sainsburys) and there are some things they don't stock. I'm also not that impressed with their wines, though they do have quite a good selection of bottled beers.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 25/01/2015 19:18

No need for all that suff anyway because they have tinned hot dogs and batchellors super noodles in my local one this week Grin

RitaOrange · 25/01/2015 19:18

Is this a joke thread ?
Surely not?

I buy all my herbs and spices from a specialist shop.
I doubt Waitrose would have any of your ingredients.
lidl is good for wine, wine, cheese, ham, olives, bread and rolls(heaven),
wine, cheese, gherkins, wine etc.

Patilla · 25/01/2015 19:19

Mine has fantastic non salted pistachios in tubs like pick and mix.

It's brill.

WyrdByrd · 25/01/2015 19:20

I'm working on the assumption that the OP is taking the piss...Hmm

I've only recently started shopping at Lidl. It's far from perfect but I'd imagine I could get most of the herbs and spices on that list at ours (which is not big), or a fair substitute.

I certainly have a bag of their unsalted pistachios in my cupboard as I type!

HenriettaTurkey · 25/01/2015 19:22

If you can't find galangal, Ginger is a perfectly acceptable substitute.

morethanpotatoprints · 25/01/2015 19:22

I go to several and get what's on offer that week, then most days I go to Morrisons really close to us, buy the half price use by date for tea and whatever else they have that doesn't need cooking.
I then go outside and give a bag full of the no need to cook stuff to a couple of homeless guys, who are usually round the back.

fredfredgeorgejnr · 25/01/2015 19:22

Lidl's are hugely different sizes... it's no dried beans that really annoy me in ours, and the veg selection is very poor and badly stock maintained.

fatlazymummy · 25/01/2015 19:24

No tri colour pasta ? Who buys pasta? Make it yourself OP.

Alisvolatpropiis · 25/01/2015 19:26

I get all my spices from The Range as they sell them in massive jars.

Get fresh stuff from Morrisons, which is right next to my nearest Aldi's.

As you've put up a nice consice list I know which bits I can get from which shop. Helpful, thanks!

Waitrose is wildly overrated in my humble opinion. Wouldn't shop there if I was paid to

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 25/01/2015 19:26

Not lidl but you could at aldi Wink

I rarely buy packet food and they have usually had the spices/herbs that I need for recipes. They sell gluten free bread and rolls.

There are a few branded things that we prefer but we shop at aldi because we like it not for budget reasons. I just do a big monthly shop at ocado or sainsburys and have it delivered then carry on with the aldi shop.

MrsGolightly · 25/01/2015 19:29

Ha! you massive plonker OP!!

dalmatianmad · 25/01/2015 19:30

Surely this thread is a wind up? Grin

SacredHeart · 25/01/2015 19:33

No white or pink grapefruit - yes 20p each!
No purple sprout broccoli - Yes! and organic
No vanilla extract - yes!
No cinnamon - yes
No cumin - yes
No bay leaves - yes
No galangal - no, but ginger
No French parsley - yes and flay leaf
No cumin - yes again
No scottch bonnet - ohh yes

No freeka - no unfortunately
No non stalted pistachio - oh yes, packets and serve yourself bins
No tri colour pasta - yup
No gluten free bread - for sure

maybe it's not the shop but your location that's not middle class.

tobysmum77 · 25/01/2015 19:34

yanbu op when I last went in our local one the only meat they had was mince and chicken. But buy spices from an asian supermarket, much much cheaper anyway.

I think people who rave about lidl dont live round here.

KatieKaye · 25/01/2015 19:37

How terribly infra dig to have to buy one's bay leaves, OP.
The sign of a parenu, I'm afraid Wink
You simply have to grow your own if you wish to be taken seriously by the real middle classes. Preferably in the form of a pair of standard bay trees in Versailles planters, one on either side of your front door.

cozietoesie · 25/01/2015 19:44

I'm not so sure about the front door, Katie - you'd have to train the wolfhounds very well indeed.

woowoo22 · 25/01/2015 19:45

Oh believe me those pesky middle classes (proles! Chuh.) have it easy in Lidl. I was just in there the other day and COULD NOT BELIEVE they didn't have caviar! I had to get it specially shipped in from Tesco, otherwise my polo-playing landed-gentry lover Tarquin Thosstilthwaite-Crumpet-Jones would have been tres disappointed. Yah.

TwoLittleTerrors · 25/01/2015 19:47

Not trying to nit pick, but you should buy galangal in a Chinese grocer, not an Indian one. It's a South East to Far East asian spice. Mostly Thai, Indonesian but also Chinese.

It's common as muck in Hong Kong where I come from.

Don't think cinnamon and cumin is Middle class either ..

TiggerLillies · 25/01/2015 19:47

With some of those products, I'd say rather than middle class, the OP is in a class of her own!Grin
(Wondering how many people have heard of Freeka).

woowoo22 · 25/01/2015 19:48

Uhhhh... FREEKA!

woowoo22 · 25/01/2015 19:49

Or freekeh!

Le freak, c'est chic!

fluffyraggies · 25/01/2015 19:55

Ha ha This is so funny! Grin

Especially it's not the shop but your location that's not middle class. I think we've hit the very ironic nail on the head GrinGrin

DaphneMoonCrane · 25/01/2015 19:56

Their Malbec is amazing, and is on offer at the moment at under a fiver. If that's not middle class, I don't know what is.

Also, my local Lidl has purple sprouting broccoli.

woowoo22 · 25/01/2015 19:57

What is Malbec? Red wine?
