no one middle class can exist on a lidl shop

lmontmont · 25/01/2015 18:56

I've really tried to get into to lidl to help with the budget but I find the quality hit and miss and its just like a glorified corner shop with a tiny range. I went away with more on my list that I couldn't buy than I could!

No white or pink grapefruit
No purple sprout broccoli
No vanilla extract
No cinnamon
No cumin
No bay leaves
No galangal
No French parsley
No cumin
No scottch bonnet
No polenta
No freeka
No non stalted pistachio
No tri colour pasta
No gluten free bread

And the list goes on, I don't know how on earth they think they can get middle class people to shop there

OP posts:

Google doesn't now what freeka is.

Ah, you probably mean freekeh. So working class to misspell it.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 25/01/2015 19:05

Im not sure any supermarket provides everything tbh.
I always need more than one.
Lidl are great value. And i love loads of their products
Asda do a baby bath that we love
Waitrose do baby bottom butter. Lasts for ever.
The greengrocer outside my office seems to have great plums atm Blush

Lweji · 25/01/2015 19:06

They are also great for large tubs of candy for parties, which also double up as food storage boxes.

I wouldn't describe any of these as 'middle class'
vanilla extract
cinnamon
cumin
bay leaves
French parsley
cumin
scottch bonnet
tri colour pasta

Mainly because they aren't and secondly because I'm not a twat.

WorraLiberty · 25/01/2015 19:07

No-one middle class would create such a naff thread surely?

TheRealAmandaClarke · 25/01/2015 19:07

Oh and i love lidls maramlade. Mmmm

Endler32 · 25/01/2015 19:08

Lol at your list of foods, they are hardly 'food you can't live without', some I never knew existed Grin.

I'm not middle class, I don't really like LIdl, I do go in there to buy Salmon, bin bags and Orange tooth paste. I have tried to make do with a big shop in LIdl but just didn't like the food or the quality of their veg ( would rather pay a little bit more so it lasts longer ), maybe it's just our local store that's rubbish.

makeminea6x · 25/01/2015 19:09

What's French parsley, and more importantly WHAT is baby bottom butter? I thought I was middle-class but clearly not better cancel the veg box

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 25/01/2015 19:09

I can never be middle class.

I understood less than half of the things on that list.

LadyJinglyJones · 25/01/2015 19:09

I can't get everything I want at any one supermarket. I always mix it up. Don't go to a Lidl because I don't have one handy, but I would if I did, then I'd just get the other stuff somewhere else.

When I am near a Lidl I pop in for the chocolate and to check out the random toolbox/camping stove/diving hat section.

Not fussed about much of the "middle class" list, but I do get through loads of cumin.

MrsPiggie · 25/01/2015 19:10

Damn, I thought I was middle class, but must have been wrong all along, since I can survive without tri colour pasta and galangal, whatever that is.

BMW6 · 25/01/2015 19:10

Op - you are not middle class. Just a pretentious twat. Jog on now.

Fizzyplonk · 25/01/2015 19:11

In fairness I was disappointed that Aldi didn't have thai curry paste (only jars of thai curry sauce). They did have fresh lemongrass, garlic, ginger, chilli and coriander though so I'll make my own.
They didn't have many tinned pulses either. Only chickpeas and kidney beans.

Charitybag · 25/01/2015 19:11

ManAliveThisThingsFantastic · 25/01/2015 19:11

You spelt "freekeh" wrong...

TheRealAmandaClarke · 25/01/2015 19:11

Baby bottom butter is a bit like vaseline in texture. Its a barrier cream for baby bots (and a good moisuriser) made with olive oil and vanilla. It smells scrummy.

tinklykeys · 25/01/2015 19:12

Er,

I thought the list was really funny. Does that mean that a sense of humour can't be purchased at lidl either? (Based on the serious responses!)

purplemeggie · 25/01/2015 19:12

If you shop there regularly, you will find many of these things. They operate stock circulation, so not everything is every week. Not sure I've ever found vanilla essence (which is not nearly middle class enough for me Wink, but I have found very good quality vanilla pods and vanilla paste. Their smoked salmon is better and cheaper than Waitrose and they do fantastic deli foods.
You need to go there and buy what they have, rather than trying to tick things off a list. If you need a list of ingredients, you probably are better off going somewhere else.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 25/01/2015 19:13

french parsley
Dunno. Other than it might be from France.
Is it another name for flat leaf parsley?

Oh and lidl nappies are brilliant.

thelittlebooktroll · 25/01/2015 19:13

Cinnamon is middle-classHmm

NotCitrus · 25/01/2015 19:14

Lidl has vanilla pods, risotto rice, organic vegetables, mini veg, olive oil and jamon serrano and dried chantarelles...

Think of it as buying whatever is available in a charming posh market!

ShouldiWork · 25/01/2015 19:14

Ummm - you sound chained to your Nigella- and not confident to adapt recipes.

No white or pink grapefruit - maybe they're out of season
No purple sprout broccoli - substitute with regular broccoli
No vanilla extract - mine has this
No cinnamon - mine has this
No cumin - mine has this
No bay leaves - mine has this (did you just miss the spice aisle?)
No galangal - not exactly life's essential! Anyway - spices are best bought from Indian grocers.
No French parsley - mine has fresh and dried. What's 'French' parsley?
No cumin - mine has this
No scottch bonnet - sub with chilli
No polenta - mine has this
No freeka - lots of freakers here
No non stalted pistachio - you'll live
No tri colour pasta - because it taste like its been extruded from an anus
No gluten free bread - mine has gf bread mix - which is frankly a superior product.

boodles · 25/01/2015 19:15

My lidl sells purple sprouting brocolli, it is with the mange tout :)

Eyespy24 · 25/01/2015 19:17

I use aldi & lidl to try & economise too. Then I get ocado along a day or two later with all the bits I couldn't get. Works pretty well. It definitely sounds like you missed the spice section!
