just that really. Obv I dont know him IRL so im only judging on what ive seen on TV. He just seems really rude to all his guests on the show... what does everyone else think? Grin

Yup, certainly didn't come out well out of it:

Oh dear, bless - well he definitely styles himself as older doesn't he?! Knows his target audience, same as Paul HW... And I do know of his background but tbh that's no indication of talent/experience as 2-4 yrs in a Michelin star environment (2 of which were actually in pastry) would barely see him out of the veg peeling.... Right place, right time - again just like Jamie - plus big enough balls/confidence (is arrogance/cockiness)... Still, gives me something to rant at of a Saturday! Love a verbal punch bag session to release all those week day tensions! :)

I hated Raymond Blanc for years when he bitched about British women feeding their kids on beans on toast instead of slaving over a hot cassoulet like his Maman.

Then I saw a programme where his kitchen staff seemed to genuinely like him. They even took the piss out of him and he went along with the joke.

So I think he's probably a good ouef.

chopinbabe · 24/01/2015 12:53

He is lovely, charming and well mannered in real life and has a very impressive cv before he became famous.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 24/01/2015 12:53

Clash , bloody hell I didn't know that, not good. Shock

MassaAttack · 24/01/2015 12:54

Actually BOF, what has happened to Gary Rhodes?

Mitchell and Webb surely didn't destroy his TV career Shock

MassaAttack · 24/01/2015 12:56

2 years in pastry is pretty good, I thought? Technical, innit.

wowfudge · 24/01/2015 12:56

JM is dyslexic and I heard him being interviewed once - he prepares and rehearses lots for Saturday Kitchen because he is terrified of messing up. He learns the scripts because he can't read the autocue properly. Perhaps that has something to do with how he comes across. That said, I don't see him in any bad light - seems like a nice guy.

SlaggyIsland · 24/01/2015 12:57

I watched a documentary about him a few years ago. He bought some hugely expensive classic car to drive in the Mille Miglia. He was AWFUL. His co-driver was a women, and a highly experienced racing driver, and he made so many vile sexist jibes to her. Was rude and arrogant and an all-round dick.
And of course ignored all advice and stuffed his expensive car and then cried like a baby.

limitedperiodonly · 24/01/2015 13:01

Gary Rhodes insisted on an artist to retouch the make up on his hands for any close ups because they're quite raw-looking.

I can't help you with his whereabouts though.

TheSpottedZebra · 24/01/2015 13:03

Doesn't Gary Rhodes have a cruise ship /Dubai restaurant empire now?

I've met Raymond blanc and he is very lovely. OBSESSED by food and the cooking and the growing of. And he had some seeds sent to a friend who had mentioned that she remembered a certain tomato. He had no need to do that.

James Martin has the most magnificent... greenhouse. On his show. I lust after it.

Sparklingbrook · 24/01/2015 13:04

The thing is with someone knowing JM and thinking he's nob, is that it's their opinion.
I know someone who I think is a massive nob and everyone else thinks they are lovely, and vice versa.

iklboo · 24/01/2015 13:09

It is lovely what Matt Goss is doing for the cancer patient though.

MassaAttack · 24/01/2015 13:09

That is true, Sparking. I'm a complete bellend, but several people seem to like me enough to want to hang out with me, and I recently got promoted at work.

I can think of a few who really, really dislike me though Grin

Purplecircle · 24/01/2015 13:11

I love James Martin. He's a genuinely nice bloke. And he's not full of all the fucking superlatives like Jamie Oliver and Tom Kerridge. I can't stand all the amazing this and brilliant that bollocks

thornrose · 24/01/2015 13:12

I always think he comes across as a bit awkward, almost amateurish (although he's been doing it for years) and quite clumsy when talking to his guests.

I think Simon on Sunday Brunch is similarly awkward.

Gary Rhodes was SO annoying and don't get me started on Tim bloody Lovejoy.

expatinscotland · 24/01/2015 13:14

I like him. Can't watch Jamie, ugghhh.

ClashCityRocker · 24/01/2015 13:15

True, sparkling.

I like Nigel Slater and his gourmet leftovers. I have never had 'a few bits of chorizo, manchego cheese, devilled prunes and leftover vine leaves' hanging about the back of the fridge.

Behooven · 24/01/2015 13:17

I like him. The hospital food thing he did was great and he cooks food that I could eat unlike some of the crap on the TV.
He has an interesting past wrt the beautiful Tiffany ring he wears.

Inkanta · 24/01/2015 13:17

He doesn't strike me as an obvious nob at all. Gary Roads does.

I don't want to watch him though every Sat and Sun though.

TheSpottedZebra · 24/01/2015 13:18

What's the Tiffany ring thing?

limitedperiodonly · 24/01/2015 13:19

I had half a tin of sweetcorn hanging around in the back of the fridge. I only remembered it when I opened the door and the smell hit me. Like vomit.

I bet that never happens to Nigel.

Bowlersarm · 24/01/2015 13:20

I like him. I like Jamie. I like Nigella. I like Delia. I like Lorraine. I like Mary Berry.

I can't stand Nigel Slater Grin (Although I like his recipes)

MassaAttack · 24/01/2015 13:22

I love Nigel Slater. That's his real kitchen and backyard isn't it, that they film. It's bloody lovely.

I need to know about the ring.

limitedperiodonly · 24/01/2015 13:22

Gary Rhodes is all right. We were doing a thing at Great Ormond Street Hospital about cheap and easy food to tempt sick children with.

He wasn't very friendly with us - not horrible, just distant. But when the children came to eat he was great with them.
