He just thinks it was harmless. 'If you don't like it, don't look.' I'd like to educate him but I can't seem to find the words.

He's intelligent but can't seem to get this one.

Are you familiar with Godwin's law at all, Norland?

Calling people Hitler/Stalin just because they don't agree with you and are arguing their case on t'internet makes you look a bit of a fool. HTH.

Norland · 22/01/2015 18:41

Sorry girls, got to cook supper now. Chicken breasts with garlic and lemon on rosemary mash. Probably do a reduced white wine jus to go with them.

Will pop back later to see if common-sense has broken out.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 22/01/2015 18:45

Well thats the most intelligent thing youve said on this thread
Might we talk amongst ourselves while we wait for your return?
Hmm

YonicScrewdriver · 22/01/2015 18:46

None of us are girls, dear boy.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 22/01/2015 18:49

Really.
What a croc of shit.
No answers to any questions posed. Not one simgle meaningful response or remark but still has the audacity to suggest the feminsits will come round to the misogynists way of thinking.

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 22/01/2015 18:57

Honestly, the boys these threads attract.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 22/01/2015 19:05

Off to have supper. DH has made chicken tits with a white wine jus.

Floisme · 22/01/2015 19:05

I would let them all have their day. Page 3 will go eventually, I'm sure and when it does, it will take the whole paper down with it.

If The Sun executives had any business sense they would have grabbed the opportunity to reinvent themselves and broaden their client base - because god knows they need to. Instead they blew it all for the sake of a Jeremy Clarkson-esque joke. Their choice but you reap what you sow.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 22/01/2015 19:08

My concern though is that this whole debacle simply underlines what a sexist society we live in, that we cannot have equality.
The patriarchal system is too strong.
Sad

8000 new signatures today and there's a new fb page, Men Against Page 3.
Want the link Norland

Floisme · 22/01/2015 19:59

I know what you mean amandaclarke and today is a disappointment, there's no getting away from it. But I still believe things are a lot better than they were. (It helps that I'm ancient!) And talking with my son makes me feel optimistic for the future - although I might just be a blindly doting mum of courseGrin

Patsyandeddie · 22/01/2015 22:07

It's not wrong, just outdated! We shouldn't bring up children to think that naked bodies are wrong! We are one or the other, so what, all this pixelation drives me mad, I feel we are going back to the dark ages!!

Jerseygirl70 · 22/01/2015 22:10

So women are made to feel ashamed of breast feeding in public when the person next to you could be looking at page 3 of The Sun? I'm sorry but that is a double standard. I say ban the cosmetically enhanced, spray tanned blond bimbo boobs and lets see real people's bodies of all sizes, races and genders. If that doesn't sell papers then scrap the whole idea. It's a rubbish paper anyway IMHO.

Patsyandeddie · 22/01/2015 22:11

I wish I had been Sam fox, great boobs, pretty face, by the time she was 27 she was one of the wealthiest women in Britain - exploitation, bring it on!!

Patsyandeddie · 22/01/2015 22:14

Don't even bother, page 3 was never wrong! Most of us holiday abroad, som go topless, some don't, what does it matter. These girls are pretty and young, is that what bugs people?

Willferrellisactuallykindahot · 22/01/2015 22:21

Wow patsyandeddie you certainly are a master debater. How can anyone disagree with such an articulate argument?

Sallystyle · 22/01/2015 22:22

Or you could read the thread Patsy and you wouldn't need to ask if the women being young and pretty is what bother us.

OmnipotentQueenOfTheUniverse · 22/01/2015 22:34

Patsy if you'd like to see 16 yo back on page 3 you probably need to start by writing to your mp as i don't think that would be legal now.

I'm sure you'd get quite a bit of support from the sun itself if you shared your idea with them. I don't think you'll get much support here though.

Willferrellisactuallykindahot · 22/01/2015 22:35

It's not wrong, just outdated! We shouldn't bring up children to think that naked bodies are wrong! We are one or the other, so what, all this pixelation drives me mad, I feel we are going back to the dark ages!!

So you would be quite happy to see Jack, 19, from Wolverhampton's naked arse in your daily paper then? Super, why don't you pitch it to The Sun to do alternate day male and female page 3 photos, if it drives you so mad that blokes bodies are always so damned covered up?

MistressDeeCee · 23/01/2015 03:23

Well - he may feel its harmless thats his point of view. As long as he's not buying the newspaper and making a point of commenting about the tits. I mean, of course you can have a discussion perhaps even come to a common viewpoint eventually but men often dont think exactly like women about these things, initially. Why would they?

Threads like this will result in quite a few people taking pleasure in calling your DH an unintelligent idiot and far worse, which isn't going to be nice for you to read is it? Unless of course you wanted that in which case, you're all good.

Ask a mate's advice fgs

Romann · 23/01/2015 03:55

The page 3 issue is a tiny part of a big problem. elporto posted a youtube video that illustrates part of it. Women are underrepresented in serious media and disproportionately depicted as objects: decorative or sexual. The fact that all the photos showed men engaged in active pursuits and women passively posing was interesting. Many women perpetuate this. So many female singers perform nearly naked (like Rihanna) etc as though their amazing music wasn't enough by itself. Male singers are practically always dressed! I always tell my sons I like Adele because the songs are great and because she wears clothes on stage!

It's good to recognise this, and even better to follow up by e.g. not buying the Sun and not visiting the Daily Fail website and clicking on that stupid sidebar.

I don't think it's the Sun's fault particularly, but I would be delighted to see the end of Page 3 and I signed the petition.

Media debate about these things is good because it highlights the problem. It seems to be very deeply ingrained in people that what women look like is at least as important as what they do. Remember that commentator thinking it was OK to talk on national TV about Bartoli not being 'much of a looker' when she'd just won Wimbledon FFS?! It should be shocking that he was even thinking it let alone saying it.
