To want the dr to do more

bouncingbelle · 20/01/2015 19:39

I've been lying on my living room floor for 20 hours since bending down to pick up my phone and doing something to my back. I literally can't move-can't roll over, sit up, anything. Called gp and they have given me painkillers but they aren't touching the pain and I still can't move.

AIBU to want someone to do SOMETHING? How long am I expected to lie like this??!! (Self-pity alert!)

What exactly are you worried will happen?

they are professionals. They are not going to yell at you for daring to call them. In act they would rather you did.

You are not some drunk after a ride home. You are a a person in pain who can barely move. call them.

Gileswithachainsaw · 21/01/2015 09:47

x posts.

how can you be refused an ambulance.

They attend unnecessary call outs all the time. This is not one of them.

GraysAnalogy · 21/01/2015 09:48

If you had rang last night after 20 hours on the floor you would have gotten one. They would not have refused.

BigCatFace · 21/01/2015 09:48

What the hell? On what basis did they refuse you? So sorry bouncingbelle.

Nicknacky · 21/01/2015 09:48

The main thing is that hopefully you will get help, doesn't matter if it is an ambulance or a doctor who comes out.

I still can't get my head around your partners lack of action!

canyou · 21/01/2015 09:56

Shock On what ground were you refusedAngry Angry Angry Angry DP got called out to a tooth ache before Confused

GokTwo · 21/01/2015 09:58

They refused? Why?!

sparechange · 21/01/2015 10:02

You've slipped a disc...

Have you got any numbness/loss of feeling in your legs, bum or feet?

They'll take it very seriously if you have, but if it is 'just' a disc (and it is total and utter agony) there is nothing they can do apart from dose you up on the drugs you've already got. They will start to take effect soon, and I really feel for you. It is such a rotten pain

bouncingbelle · 21/01/2015 10:09

They said it wasn't an emergency situation! Explained I,ve now been in the floor for 31 hours, pain is now radiating down legs n I,ve been sick but they said they didn't want to interfere with treatment I was already getting from my gp (??!!) and someone from nhs24 would call to assess situation. I can't believe this is happening. Just as background info, I have a serious heart complaint and have had a stroke in the past. I know it's not relevant to my back pain but in the general situation I think it is relevant.

My dp really is nice, honestly. He just never goes to the gp himself.
Nhs24 have just called. Said they only deal with out of hours cases and to call my gp - who refused to come out yesterday.

I can't up my painkillers cos I,ll just be more sick, and still I don't know what I,ve actually done to my back. This is a nightmare.

ShockAngry

I can't believe they are just leaving you

iklboo · 21/01/2015 10:12

If you have any numbness at all in legs, bum or feet - or if it feels like you need to go to the loo but you can't you need to call them back. Cauda Equina syndrome is a possible serious side effect of a back injury like yours & I wouldn't take it lightly (if I were them).

Patilla · 21/01/2015 10:13

Can you ask the GP to wither come out and visit you or call an ambulance for you? Rather than asking each organisation this would place a decision with the GP about how to help you?

canyou · 21/01/2015 10:14

ring you gp now and talk to them or if they cannot speak to you dpeak to their ofgice/practice manager, tell them you are on the floor for 24 hrs, you cannot toilet yourself, move independantly, pain has movedand or changed, you are being sick. Ask for help, if it is refused ask for the contact for the complaints procrdure. Shock Shock What happens ehen DP goes out?

ohdearitshappeningtome · 21/01/2015 10:17

Sounds a bit like sciatica also if pins radiating down legs!

The meds should be working now if you have been taking them regularly Hmm

Dontstepinthecowpat · 21/01/2015 10:18

You DP needs to call your GP right now and demand care for you. You cannot take that amount of meds and not eat or drink anything. I bet your DP would phone is you moved your bowels! I would be worried sick if my DP was stuck on the floor all that time.

Please get in touch with your GP, this has to be looked at before you end up with serious damage.

bouncingbelle · 21/01/2015 10:19

Just phoned gp n DEMANDED home visit, they are going to call me back......

Meanwhile dp is hoovering round about me. If I could get up I'd kill him!!

shouldnthavesaid · 21/01/2015 10:19

Call your GP now and explain you have difficulty toileting, eating, drinking, have been on the floor for over 24 hours and have a history of serious health problems. I work for a neurosurgical ward and have seen people in better positions being admitted and assessed for emergency surgery. I'm not saying that's what you need, but I'm saying that's the standard of care you should be given. Not waiting on more phone calls!!

GraysAnalogy · 21/01/2015 10:20

Did you tell them that you moved from the floor to the sofa? Because that in itself would have descalated it from being an emergency in their eyes.

Did you mention you've had a stroke? That is a very very important piece of information and if they've refused you after you told them that I would be putting serious complaints in.

shouldnthavesaid · 21/01/2015 10:21

Could your DP carry you into a taxi to A&E?

GraysAnalogy · 21/01/2015 10:25

I would have OP strapped to a spinal board. The taxi drive would be sheer hell and could do more damage.

PausingFlatly · 21/01/2015 10:27

This is ridiculous.Shock

If all else fails, get a friend or neighbour to help and order a large taxi. Tell them you will need to lie down in it, so they can send one with enough space.

Get DP to remove a door from its hinges (this is easier than it sounds - the less painted-in the screws are, the easier it will be).

DP and friend move you onto the door and deposit you in taxi for a ride to A&E.

PausingFlatly · 21/01/2015 10:28

But that's very last resort, because of what Grays says about further damage.

Greywackejones · 21/01/2015 10:28

To my mind theres a pnuemonia risk (sic). I think an ambulance is justified, but you muddied waters by refusing to and calling GP.

I sincerely hope someone's picked you up now though. Sounds terrible. Flowers

GokTwo · 21/01/2015 10:29

Crikey, sorry op, that's shocking!!
