MIL going to christening she is not invited to...

MIL is the true definition of overbearing, but today was quite a cracker, even for her!

So she was telling us today that she's off to a family christening that she's not invited to. Christening is due to be small and personal with just Grandparents and a few friends from what I hear. We know she's not invited because she has been quite vocal about how much she dislikes the mother of the baby and that she's 'a mental case'. She refuses to call the baby by the proper name as she hates it, and if she has to say it, it's said with a sarcastic tone, even in front of the parents. She's already been to visit the baby (4 hour round trip) after being asked not to as it wasn't convenient and received an icy shoulder from the mother, and awkward one from the father, much to her disgust.

The christening is in a different country and shes actually gone and booked flights and a hotel.

DH and I were totally Hmm and Shock.

AIBU to be giddily awaiting the resulting fireworks?! Grin

8 years of biting my lip at all the daft and insensitive things she's done for DH's sake. This is going to be good.

Most Christian churches require baptism to be public whether or not it is a separate ceremony or held during the normal service. They donor however generally condone shit stirring by the congregation ....

Discopanda · 17/01/2015 21:38

She does realise that you can't object to a christening like you can object to a wedding, right? She can't stand up in the middle of the church and announce that the baby can't be christened with the name that she doesn't approve of.

strawberrydaquari · 17/01/2015 21:42

My first ever place mark

NotYouNaanBread · 17/01/2015 21:46

This is brilliant. Is the christening tomorrow then?

JaneFonda · 17/01/2015 21:47

This thread is fantastic! Grin

OP I usually hate when people request updates but... You just have to, you have a responsibility to all of MN now!

cookiefiend · 17/01/2015 21:53

Ooh... This will be good.

LittleBairn · 17/01/2015 21:56

Grin Disco I could so see someone trying to do that now. I object!

CrapBag · 17/01/2015 22:08

Oooo I have to see how this turns out.

What an utter cow though, doing this purely for spiteful reasons one would assume.

What is she to these people that she doesn't like? I am assuming she is related and not just a 'friend' of the family?

Cheby · 17/01/2015 22:08

My grandmother regularly turns up to funerals uninvited. She scans for notices in the local paper. I know they are public events in churches so its semi ok but still weird. Recent she attended the funeral of one of the parents of one of my mother's school friends. DM hasn't seen the school friend for 35 years, and DGM has had no contact with the family since DM was at school. Worse yet she signed the condolence book in DM's name, so her school friend probably thinks DM turned up but couldn't be arsed to say hello in person.

ChubbyKitty · 17/01/2015 22:11

Oh my.

Why would you? It's one thing to wind someone up and generally be a bit of a cow but she's being very a tad extreme!

ChubbyKitty · 17/01/2015 22:12

*when I say it's one thing, I don't mean it's an okay thing, of course. Just, the sheer degree of being bizarre.

SaggyAndLucy · 17/01/2015 22:21

I'd warn the parents personally!
but only so I could be party to their reaction! Wink
she really does sound entertaining though!
mine is just grumpy! Sad

Jodie1982 · 17/01/2015 22:24

Omg do those sort of people really exist!? She sounds a bit Mentally Unwell. The nerve!!

lalamumto3 · 17/01/2015 22:28

Marking my place looking forward to hearing full story

pepperfish · 17/01/2015 22:53

Trying to read all the replies without DH noticing what I'm up to (I feel a bit guilty to have put this online).

We did get the dog, and MIL does come round, but always brings her hand gel with her which I find very amusing!

Not sure when the christening is, have a feeling it might be March. I'm pretty sure something will happen between now and then though!

They can't probably stop her going to the ceremony but I hope they get great delight in leaving her at the church and not letting her go to the meal or whatever they're having after

summersoft · 17/01/2015 22:57

How very odd.

StripeyCustard · 17/01/2015 23:13

Would it very bad to tip them off so they hold the christening a week early? Grin

EdSheeran · 17/01/2015 23:20

How is MIL related to the baby?

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 17/01/2015 23:28

I'd send the parents an anonymous note (cut from pages of a newspaper)
Something along the lines of "By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes."
Inconvenient is going to be my new code for "feck off"

marshmallowpies · 17/01/2015 23:37

I've seen it happen at church weddings where anyone can come in - at my friend's wedding we all wondered who the lady sitting in the back crying was, turned out nobody knew her, just one of those people who lies a good cry at weddings! But this one takes the biscuit.

Also had the flip situation last year with a wedding of one of MIL's friends daughters - we weren't officially invited, not sent an invite or anything, but suddenly MIL was telling us we should go, the invite was for the extended family, the bride (who I barely knew) really wanted us there...there was a lot of arm twisting but in the end we sent a gift & didn't go.

fishinabarrell · 18/01/2015 01:08

Poor parents, your MIL really is spiteful isn't she? Not invited, thinks the mum 'mental' and won't call the bay its name yet she imposes herself where she's not wanted.

MiscellaneousAssortment · 18/01/2015 03:47

Lordy, how bizarre! Please do update...

mcdog · 18/01/2015 06:23

This is brilliant, eagerly awaiting an update Smile

HelloItsStillMeFell · 18/01/2015 06:30

What is the connection to the parents of the baby and how does she know all the details if she's not invited? And why does she even want to go if she doesn't like the mother? Confused
