I'm in my 40s and yet somehow don't feel like I've ever got a handle on this.

What times/how often do you brush & floss?

Shower?

Wash your face?

I know there are no 'right' answers to these questions but I'm trying to figure out what it means to be well-groomed and to look after myself properly. Feeling a bit lost. What does it mean to you?

I brush my teeth every morning and night and use those teepee things when I remember because the dental hygienist told me to.

I don't shower because we don't have one. Pre-DS I used to have a bath almost every night but nowadays I am lucky if I fit two in a week. I do 't miss them though as a bath with a four year old in the house is never very relaxing.

I wash my face when I clean my teeth.

I shave my legs less than once a month if that, but never been very hairy. Armpits a bit more often.

I don't put body creams on but I do use e45 on my face or whatever moisturiser is on offer.

I wash hair every other day.

I wear bras for days but change my pants every day.

I don't wear panty-liners.

BMO · 17/01/2015 19:50

MrsHathaway - day 2 of not washing, you'd smell of sweat with Sure and Chanel over the top. Not a great combination imo.

HippyPottyMouth · 17/01/2015 19:53

Shower, moisturise face and apply deodorant every morning. Wash hair every other day. Clean pants, socks and top every day, jeans, jumpers etc are good for a few days or until baby throws food on them. Brush teeth first thing and last thing, floss once in a blue moon. Wash face with soap if I've had make up on, any other cleansers make me spotty.

goldopals · 17/01/2015 19:56

I shower daily or more often if I work out. I wash my hair once per week. It is fingertip length and does not really need washing more often.

I brush my teeth a minimum of two times per day and started flossing one week ago today :) I go to the dentist once every ten years.

MrsHathaway · 17/01/2015 19:58

BMO I really don't think so - not if she hasn't got properly sweaty (a hot day, a gym visit, polyester catsuit).

Besides, it isn't the sweat that smells, but the bacteria swimming in it, and the pheromones.

spiderlight · 17/01/2015 20:29

Shower and wash my hair every morning without fail. Even when I was seriously ill in hospital and couldn't stand for more than a few seconds at a time, I still managed every day - dragged a plastic chair into the ward shower and sat on it, and washed one-handed because the other arm was stuck out of the cubicle attached to a drip! I could not concieve of facing the world without having had my morning shower.

Teeth - morning, afternoon and evening as a minimum, but they also get a quick scrub every time I leave the house.

Face - wash in the shower every morning and use a cleansing wipe at bedtime.

I'll wear jeans for a couple of days but everything else has to be clean on daily, and clean pants at bedtime too.

Ivegotthree · 17/01/2015 20:35

Am interested in why ppl wear pants in bed? I only do when I've got my period and I'm worried I might leak.

GallicIsCharlie · 17/01/2015 20:55

Impressive! And completely bonkers Wink

paddy29 · 17/01/2015 21:08

Don't understand showering every day. The advice is not to. 3 or 4 times a week for me.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 17/01/2015 21:09

Who advises not to paddy?

dementedpixie · 17/01/2015 21:10

where is this advice not to wash every day as I have never seen it??

Dumbledoresgirl · 17/01/2015 21:19

I shower every morning unless I am in a hurry. I do feel grubby putting on clothes if I haven't showered but I am sure it is only an illusion as, once the clothes are on, I don't feel dirty and don't think I smell.

Wash face every morning.

Brush teeth twice a day, after breakfast and before bed. Floss when I can be bothered - maybe every other day?

Wash hair every 4 or 5 days.

Change pants and socks everyday.

Change shirts every other day unless it gets visibly dirty or smelly in one day.

Jeans? Gosh, I hardly wash them at all! I suppose I have found my skanky side.

has no one ever said anything to her laqueen?

vienna1981 · 17/01/2015 21:45

Shave every day. Bath or shower every day. Brush teeth twice daily, floss once. Fresh socks, drawers and vest (winter) every day. Outer clothes every five or six days.

MajesticWhine · 17/01/2015 21:45

Really? In your 40s and have not worked out when to wash.

Royalsighness · 17/01/2015 21:47

I shower every other day and wash hair every other day, always at night because mornings are too busy, any more than this and my skin bleeds.

I set hair in sleep in rollers to give it body so it doesn't look flat. I brush teeth once in the morning, wash and use an alpha hydroxy acid scrub on face once a day in the bath and night cream.

However I get bouts of depression where I won't shower for 3 or 4 days sometimes and won't look in the mirror.

Floppityflop · 17/01/2015 21:53

Bath or maybe shower in morning every day. Wash hair every other day. Clean teeth twice a day, floss not so often, maybe every three days but should be once a day, dentist every six months to a year and hygienist every three months. Wear pants once but bras twice. Tops once and anything else washable probably twice. Dry clean only stuff maybe a bit more unless it's a dress worn without anything underneath in which case wear only once. Gym stuff hmm best not say anything about that but it's only half an hour at a time!

I used to bath at night and wash in morning back in my early twenties and late teens. When I lived with my folks (until 17) they didn't have a shower and I was only allowed a bath every other day with an all-over wash in between. My major acts of rebellion since have been having a bath every day and turning up the thermostat to 18! But actually having an all-over wash in clean water is often considered cleaner in other countries, which is why, allegedly, there were no bath plugs in Soviet Russia.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 17/01/2015 21:54

I bathe twice a day.
Wash my hair every other day.
Floss my teeth every day
Brush my teeth twice a day.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 17/01/2015 21:54

Yuk!
I scrub after work, after getting up if the night's been sweaty, brush teeth after every meal, change work trousers every other day or after a diesel spillage (DW made me strip into a binbag more than once).
Some of my colleagues though...I once got into a lorry cab and then out again very quickly. Even so, everything I had on had to be boiled.

Floppityflop · 17/01/2015 21:56

Oh, also shave legs and pits every other day, cut and colour every ten days. Sort out hair down there when can be bothered or if it is so long it could hold smells. I work in a very image conscious profession though. I hate grooming as it is mega time consuming. I feel I should whiten my teeth but my major concern is for them to stay in my jaw!

paddy29 · 17/01/2015 22:00

Lots of research showing it's not great to shower every day. Wash every day is different, I wash every day.

Royalsighness · 17/01/2015 22:03

Gallic I just saw your posts and can relate, to other people I am a glam girl in early 20s with extensions, lashes and HD brows, all of that but when I feel a low coming, I notice that I neglect the small things first and before I know it I haven't showered for 4 days and I look like beetlejuice.

StaircaseAtTheUniversity · 17/01/2015 22:11

I shower always before bed, sometimes also in the morning if I have time.

Wash my face twice a day. Brush teeth twice a day and floss at night. Chance pants in morning and at night. Wash everything after one wear, which is potentially obsessive but my mum does too so I guess that's where I learnt it.

Used to wash my hair every single day but since I had my DD I have to admit it's more like twice or three times a week and a lot of dry shampoo!
