AIBU?

to suggest that if we start to hate eachother, the terrorists have won?

Having glanced at some of the threads on here since the Paris attack, I can't help feeling we are eating into their hands. Their actions, while tragic in their consequence only become far reaching if they increase suspicion and hatred between Muslims and non-Muslims. I'm amazed by the suggestion that many Muslims support these attacks. Dh and I are Muslim and we have never met a single person, here or abroad, who has agreed with the terrorist attacks of the last few years. If I did meet someone like this I would tell the police.
Could I ask everyone to remember that most humans want to live in peace and know that they and their children are safe and want the same for others too? Thank you.

Shame about the nice thread Sad

Extremists will always interpret 'holy' texts whichever way suits their twisted goals - in all faiths.
I am not worried about muslims, or christians or jews or people who pray to the golden calf - I worry about extremists.

machair, quoting those passaged could so easily be countered by quoting passages from the bible What are you trying to say? That it is an ancient outdated text that does not show a way of life that most of us want to lead? You're right.

MehsMum exactly.

There are quite rightly laws to protect from racist/homophobic/slanderous attacks but religions and institutions must be open to scrutiny and piss take.

Terrorists and murderers have no place in any religion. These latest bastards are no more Muslims than hitler was a Christian.

I think the marches in Paris and London were wonderful.

Most terrorist attacks are committed abroad and kill Muslims. This country killed millions in Iraq for oil and infrastructure deals. Israel who the west support killed hundreds upon hundreds of little children and blew the legs of f hundreds I. The summer and we continue to arm them to the teeth...people just don't see this stuff in context at all.

"connected to an actual legitimate religious group"

(ISIS/AQ can't be considered that, surely.)

I also, confusingly, agree with a poster above who said we need to look into why this radicalisation is happening, not necessarily to do with religion itself but the culture of the area where this radicalisation is flourishing, why so many young people of so many varied walks of life are turning to it. I probably haven't explained that very well Blush

Machair, you better believe I am comparing them to people prepared to kill doctors and nurses working in legal termination clinics.

Night Fanjo. And thanks Slaggy.
Oh and I don't apologise for agreeing with the OP.
How is the OP objectionable in any way whatsoever?
There are other threads where certain posters can froth and foam to their hearts' content, but this is a nice thread so feel free to fuck off if we are being too harmonious for you

Pacific, show me where in the Bible Jesus carried out such atrocities. I don't want to get into a Christian v Muslim belief argument but there was a lot of violent stuff sanctioned by the Prophet. And if you take a look at what happens in Muslim countries, well let's just say they aren't the most tolerant of places.

Pacific, have never heard of any doctors and nurses being killed for working in abortion clinics. And I'm pretty sure it's not just people who call themselves Christians who campaign outside.

Machair - just google. Lots of examples. But I would never tar all Christians with the same brush as those people.

I agree, many primarily muslim countries are not particularly peace loving or stable.
But there are many reasons for that, far more complex than 'the prophet said'.

I am rubbish at quoting the bible (or any other text) and I did not say that Jesus carried out anything, did I?

Oh for goodness sake.

This tantrumming that certain posters post the same things on threads! Of course they do if that's their belief!

All this banding together to show unity bollicks reminds me of the playground!

This is an open forum not a club for girls who all agree with each other and all think the same on every subject.

This is precisely why mumsnet gets ridiculed for being left wing north London guardian readers.

AS far as I read there were no outright offensive posts about any religion/race over the last threads and if there were then report them.

I started a similar thread 2 days ago but it turned into a bunfight. I agree we need to stand united in this.

Was very heartened in watching the match in Paris and around the works that there had been a huge demonstration in Kashmir ( a predominantly Muslim state in India) against the attacks. People need to remember that the vast majority of Muslims, whilst they do not like the offensive ( and often racist ) portrayals of Muslims and Mohammed, absolutely do bit condone these murderous attacks.

Not quite up to speed on what Jesus said, but there's plenty of smiting going on in the Old Testament.

SlaggyIsland · 11/01/2015 22:17

Jesus was pretty peace-and-love, but Paul brought some good old Testament unpleasantness back into the equation in the new Testament.

There have indeed been a fair few shootings of doctors and nurses in abortion clinics.
