To be freaked out and panic?

Just popped to waitrose for some essential dinner ingredients (naturally), and got home to find the front door wide open... I know I shut it and locked it as the nail from the Christmas wreath attacked my gloves. Just done a tentative walk around the house armed with a schooling whip, and everything seems to be in order. WTF???

Are you sure everything's in order? Drawers not been touched and neatly closed? iPads/laptop/jewellery/purse/wallets etc still there? Spare sets of keys where they should be?

Yes Sad at least I think so... No keys by door, and everything seems fine. But I was gone for at least 45 mins... Lock doesn't seem to be broken. But I definitely definitely locked it!!!! Checked under bed (!), too much crap under there for anything else. But I am on my own til about 11, and I am a bit Hmm

And when I say wide open, it was completely wide open... Unless someone has got the key (which no-one does apart from neighbours, and locks recently changed anyway), then how could a door unlock itself?? I am freaking myself out.

Sadly not, although that might actually scare any would be intruders off... I have horses and that was the only thing closest to the front door that I could find that I could feasibly use as a weapon...

Can you get the locks changed, pricey maybe but it will put your mind at rest. In the meantime is there a friend who could come and stay?

I once went into my house with a schooling whip when I had been burgled. I was armed and prepared to use it.

Burglars tend to enter behind the house and exit at the front. They don't bother to shut the front door after themselves! If (and I sincerely hope not) you've had a burglar, check all the windows/doors/entrances behind the house.
It has been very windy today. I know you say you definitely did lock the door, but could the high wind be a factor in any way?
As someone above has said, could somebody from your household have come home and not secured the door properly?

This happened to us a few weeks back-arrived home from 10 hours at work to be met by neighbour telling me he'd closed our door as it was wide open earlier-was very much a WTAF moment... Can only assume DH got sidetracked by DC & forgot to lock it-it has a tendency to open by itself if you don't give it a good slam yes DH, an actual slam & I don't give a shit how many times you tell me not to

I have called a friend who is coming over to keep me company... It all seems ok, but I just don't get how it could have unlocked itself and then opened itself?? Ps schooling whips when used in self defence can deliver a nasty shock to the recipient of the blow...! Obviously not my horses. I have double locked the front door now, and checked the back, but still freaked out.

Yep, schooling whip and waitrose, I am clearly the very stereotype of a middle class person! Like I said, nothing has been taken, and all seems quiet and ok, but eeeeeeekkkk! Freaked out. And like I said also, I know I bloody locked the bloody door!

Sorry op, I'm not diminishing in any way your unease. I'd be very wary too. Have you definitely ascertained that nothing has been stolen?
If there's no sign of any breaking & entering, and nothing taken, the Police would probably not see any point in coming round.
Very good idea to have someone round to keep you company.

You could've shut the door but whilst locking it/holding the handle it may have been open a bit an you'd have locked an open door if you get me? Was the lock still locked? if so, that's what's happened.
