To be freaked out and panic?

Just popped to waitrose for some essential dinner ingredients (naturally), and got home to find the front door wide open... I know I shut it and locked it as the nail from the Christmas wreath attacked my gloves. Just done a tentative walk around the house armed with a schooling whip, and everything seems to be in order. WTF???

I'd call the police so they can just check it out and reassure you

Hatespiders · 10/01/2015 19:25

By the way, if you had encountered an intruder (and God forbid!) he would have possibly seized your whip from you and used it to bash you with.
I used to visit burglars (among other criminals) in Prison, and they all said if a house-owner approached with a weapon of any sort they'd have snatched it from them and clumped them with it. Worth bearing in mind!

fluffyraggies · 10/01/2015 19:27

I would ask the police to check the house over for you too.

I so don't want to say this as i don't you all scared, but might someone be able to hide easily in the house?

Keepswimming123 · 10/01/2015 19:28

Door was def locked, I have the hole in my glove to prove it. There have been a number of car break ins recently (mine was one of them Sad ) just rung 101 to let them know. They said someone would get back to me. But feel a tad silly if there is actually no-one in the house. Friend is here now to keep me company. All rather odd.

We have just gone round the house together... Loudly. Put all the lights on etc. So fingers crossed. I am still really freaked out.

lilyloo · 10/01/2015 19:31

have you tried locking it again ? Might be a faulty lock.

Bogeyface · 10/01/2015 19:33

This happened to me once in my old house. I had indeed locked the door, but what I hadnt done was shut the door properly so while the lock was engaged, it wasnt actually holding the door closed.

I was freaked out too until I realised what I had done.

TheReluctantCountess · 10/01/2015 19:34

That would really freak me out too. Get a dog, a big dog.

awfulomission · 10/01/2015 19:45

The police will know what to look for to see if someone has been in the house. They won't think you are being silly if there's no one there. They will look for signs of a break in; these can be really subtle.

Keepswimming123 · 10/01/2015 19:52

Tried locking it again, and all is working. Still waiting for 101 to ring back.... Sitting in the living room with my friend, with the tv on... Less freaked out now that she is here, but still Confused what could have happened?? It's not that windy here and I don't think that even a hurricane could unlock a door...

we woke up one sunday morning with our front door wide open
i remember closing and bolting it the night before (and no , no alcohol consumed)at 11ish when letting my daughter in.
we had to walk past it to go up to bed - we would have seen it open
but at 9am it was wide open- really shit us up.

Fairyfellowsmasterstroke · 10/01/2015 19:55

Have you checked the attic???????

JennyBlueWren · 10/01/2015 19:58

Once came home from a bike ride with DH who always locks the door to find that it was not locked and a bunch of flowers had been delivered and left in the porch!
He did very thoroughly check the house but as nothing had been disturbed can only assume he hadn't locked properly.

Keepswimming123 · 10/01/2015 19:58

No I haven't checked the attic, but for someone to get up there they would have to step over a fortnight's worth of washing, negotiate a washing machine, and possibly be bitten on the ankles by a neurotic house rabbit... That being said, I might go and find myreally heavy and industrial sized torch...

Wfrances what was the outcome?

BuzzardBird · 10/01/2015 20:01

Thought you lived with your DM keep?

TangledUpInGin · 10/01/2015 20:04

Yikes!! This is why I'm glad I've got a big scary dog!! If anyone wants to try get in when she's in, best of luck to 'em! And she's always the first in when we get back from anywhere!

Award for totally pointless post goes to gin Grin

wfrances · 10/01/2015 20:06

still a mystery.
to unbolt it ,it would have to be done from the inside.
so either someone sleptwalked for just that night and opened it.
some one managed to get in ,from another source -side door/patio door ( with a key)

Keepswimming123 · 10/01/2015 20:09

I do live with my 'd'm, but she has been away all day and is not back till about 11. Boy is away with work, so apart from friend, I am on my own. I need to trade the rabbit in for a big dog, clearly. 101 have just rung back and asked if I want anyone to come round. I agreed, just to check the place out... Even though there doesn't seem to be anyone here, and nothing had been disturbed... Am I wasting police time? I just (again) don't understand why the hell the door would be wide open?!?

OP posts:
Bair · 10/01/2015 20:11

Have you rang DM to see if she popped home? You said she had been acting erratically lately.

Keepswimming123 · 10/01/2015 20:12

Only three entrances are from the front or the back... French doors have not been opened since summer, back door was locked as I checked it before I went out... Front door, as I said, was wide open. It's not got a bolt on it, so needs the keys before it can be unlocked with the Yale and the generic top lock...

OP posts:
Keepswimming123 · 10/01/2015 20:12

Yep but she is on a train at the moment.

OP posts:
BitOutOfPractice · 10/01/2015 20:16

I think bogeyface has it OP. I think you locked the door but it wasn't latched.

Keepswimming123 · 10/01/2015 20:18

I did wonder, but I gave it a good slam before locking it...
