To not let DD demand money with menaces?

DD is 9 and is pretty obsessed with loom bands!

DP is 50 and pretty obsessed with rugby!

So far, so driving me crazy good!

One day DD asked if she could take her loom bands to the rugby club, so she had something to do. The kids have all been going to the club since they were tiny, so are pretty much free range!

It took quite some time for me to realise she had been selling her loom bands to the big hairy arsed rugby players. All fine, all fairly drunk good natured!

The next time we were at the club she did it. Again, fine! She told me after she waited till the men had had a drunk and were 'being silly', before selling them! My thoughts were that Alan Sugar would be proud!

We have come again and told her she can bring her loom bands and do them but not harrass people! Not really sure she was actually harassing people but just in case!

She had brought them, showed off over the £2 she made selling a couple! Then been rude to the steward/barman, saying 'See,I told you I could sell them' in a mocking tone of voice! She has been put in time out, loom bands surgically removed and locked in the car! She has also been made to apologise!

She thinks I am being unreasonable! What do you think?

I'd let her get on with it. What is the problem?

TidyDancer · 10/01/2015 14:05

I actually can't work out if you're being lighthearted or not. if she was really rude to the barman then of course yanbu.

simbacatlivesgain · 10/01/2015 14:08

you child is unsupervised with drunk rugby players?

Well I have spent a lot of time with drunk rugby players- they mostly involved games that I wouldnt let my children see.

SIMPLESAM · 10/01/2015 14:08

Yabu, she's not demanding money, she's selling a product.

IAmAllImportant · 10/01/2015 14:09

She actually was rude!

I kind of feel a little uncomfortable with her selling them, as they really don't want them, so it feels a bit like begging! On the other hand, they are grown men and could say no!

The rudeness is not acceptable at all, especially to someone who is paid to serve drinks, not to take abuse.

VanitasVanitatum · 10/01/2015 14:11

Oh, I thought this was going to be lighthearted, then you got mean!

Had the barman been bantering her about not being able to sell them? Nothing wrong with selling them if people are willing to buy. Doesn't sound like she's charging much!

IAmAllImportant · 10/01/2015 14:11

You child is unsupervised with drunk rugby players

It is very much a family environment! The true rugby player type stuff happens much later, well after those with young families have left!

I'd rather leave my child unsupervised with a group of drunk rugby players than a prim and prissy mumsnettter any day

OstentatiousBreastfeeder · 10/01/2015 14:11

Had the barman expressed any sort of disbelief in her ability to sell them? Seems a strange comment for your DD to make.

Hassled · 10/01/2015 14:14

I sort of admire her entrepreneurial spirit but yes, you can't be letting her flog things to people who are too polite or drunk to say no.

ChippingInLatteLover · 10/01/2015 14:15

I think that you are quite possibly being mean. If she's there a lot without you (no problem with that), then they have their own relationship don't they and you don't know how much he's been teasing her saying she wouldn't sell them.

I would have talked to her about it. Had a word about her tone, but that's it. And I'm normally considered very strict.

simbacatlivesgain · 10/01/2015 14:16

We just have to hope that the coins haven't been up their foreskin first- as I recall trying to get the entire coins of the realm inside was a communal rugby game when drunk.

ChippingInLatteLover · 10/01/2015 14:17

Of course she can sell them, if the guys don't want them all they have to do is say 'No thanks love' or 'I've already bought enough to build a house, I'm good now thanks!'.

wish I was alone with some drunk rugby players.

IAmAllImportant · 10/01/2015 14:24

It sounds, from what DD has told me since, that he had directly told her not to sell them at the bar! Fair enough but she misinterpreted that as she wouldn't be able to, a sort of challenge! Not unusual, as she had ADHD. Not officially diagnosed, but I know! Life is a constant battle to rein her in!

She is the kindest person, but a bit too 'enthusiastic' for most to handle!

OP posts:
Vvvoom · 10/01/2015 14:28

I would stop this - sounds like she's irritated the barman, and I'd imagine the players' amusement will be wearing thin.

Fairenuff · 10/01/2015 14:32

She has said sorry, you have taken the loom bands away, that's the end of it surely?

Find something else for her to take with her next time and tell her she is not allowed to sell anything because people have had enough of it now.

Yes tell her to stop. It's sweet to indulge an enterprising tween one week but tiresome to be expected to buy their tat week in week out.

IAmAllImportant · 10/01/2015 14:42

if it's a constant battle to rein her in and she is over enthusiastic for people to handle, why arent you supervising more?

This is the child who never sleeps! This is a child who challenges the need to wear a coat, wear a jumper, go out in actual clothes, not pull her brother about! Borrow her for a week, no, make that two days and see if you are up to supervising her 'more'!

"It sounds, from what DD has told me since, that he had directly told her not to sell them at the bar!"

She's being a pest and the barman has likely heard moans/complaints from members about it. That's a good enough reason to confiscate her precious loom-bands and not allow her to take them to the club again.

gamerchick · 10/01/2015 15:04

It does sound as if people have complained to the barman and he's told her to stop. She's pointedly flicked the Vs at him by the sounds of it.

Stick to your guns and if she doesn't stop then no more rugby club.
