To get irritated when people who wear expensive clothes sneer at those that don't?

I just think it's so rude, snobby and nasty. We can't all afford designer and high end clothing, and it doesn't make someone a total scumbag if they choose to/have to wear cheaper clothes.

DH's friend and his wife both wear designer and high end high street clothes, and dress their 3 year old daughter in the same way. Fair enough, that's their choice and they all always look nice. However it irritates me that they look down on others who don't dress as they do (such as me, DH and our kids!). It's little things like asking where an item DD is wearing is from and if we reply it's from Asda/Next/Tesco they pull a bit of a face and say how they would simply never shop there. They also make a big deal about how they would never shop in Primark as they think it's horrible and that they'd hate anyone to see them going in or coming out of there. They were also once totally disgusted when I said DS's trousers were from a charity shop, and one of them made a jokey gagging noise.

I also used to work with a woman a few years ago who referred to lots of high street shops as "common" and "disgusting" and made a huge thing about only shopping at places like Reiss, Selfridges, Karen Millen etc. She always talked about how great her wardrobe was and how she could never bring herself to shop in the shops that the rest of us shopped in.

These kinds of attitudes really bug me. It's just so nasty and unnecessary. By all means buy clothes wherever you want to and can afford to, but don't assume that anyone that doesn't go to the same places it beneath you!

Blair I got my dd a lovely little Ralph Lauren jacket from TK Maxx in sale.....£14 it cost me!! Iirc the rrp was near or over £100

londonrach · 06/01/2015 18:01

Never heard of this. I have a reiss jumper and love it. (Bought in the 50% sale years ago and still going strong). Tbh no idea reiss was a designer till you put in op.

BlairWaldorfHeadBand · 06/01/2015 18:03

Glitz I love tkmaxx! I used that as an example because although my relatives could afford to buy expensive designer clothes they choose to buy discounted from tkmaxx, which in my opinion is the sensible thing to do

judydoes · 06/01/2015 18:05

YANBU these people are dickheads . Snobbery is not classy, classy people, TRUE classy people, are not snobs. I know rich people who love a bargain, I also know people who skint themselves to buy designer gear because It's important to them, It's often a personal choice as much as necessity.

I don't think I'd buy designer clothes even if I was very rich, I'm simply not that interested in clothes.

Inkanta · 06/01/2015 18:07

" I'm a 10-12 but I need dresses to be knee length."

Yes you're right - very hard to find at the moment on the high street.

Theboodythatrocked · 06/01/2015 18:08

What strange and boring tossers!

Change your friends.

Who gives a crap about designer clothes. How commen

montysma1 · 06/01/2015 18:08

I tend to despise people who wear expensive clothes.

tiggydiggydee · 06/01/2015 18:12

They don't sound like friends to me op...just snobs! I buy clothes from anywhere that suits me and my shape Grin from Next to Joules to Fat face to Tesco! If I like it and can afford it then I'll buy it...I don't care what shop it's in. I have a lovely handbag from a market stall that cost £12, it's fun and jolly!
I don't think I could hold my tongue if so called "friends" of mine made a jokey gagging noise in response to where an item was purchased from! Revolting people!

StarsOfTrackAndField · 06/01/2015 18:12

I'm having a little laugh at your mate thinking Karen Millen is high end, its WAG stuff

Vauxhall Conference WAG stuff at that.

hiddenhome · 06/01/2015 18:26

Dh used to do the accounts for a big estate and the Lord used to look like a tramp. Dh thought he was a scruffy labourer when he first met him Grin

It's very rude and demonstrates a distinct lack of class to put others down for any reason.

Enormouse · 06/01/2015 18:47

YANBU op, nice clothes do not make you a nice person.
I enjoy fashion and looking at blogs, pinterest, magazines etc. And recreating what I like whilst spending as little as possible.

Like tyke I get comments on how well dressed my DSes are. It is mostly asda, canny sales shopping and eBay. DS1 has a black Ted baker coat with a red lining that gets a lot of comments when I'm out and about. It was an eBay bargain and I didn't buy it thinking 'oooh label'. I bought it because it was a) a bargain b) DS1 needed a new coat and c) he'd love it because it looks just like Peter Capaldis Dr coat.

Openup41 · 06/01/2015 18:52

I think it is bad manners to tell people how much your clothes cost or boast about which shop you purchased them from. Expensive clothes/bags/jewellery does not make one a better person just more expensively dressed. Unfortunately society equates wealth with importance and some are fickle enough to believe that clothes alone mean wealth.

I laugh when people boast about having one or two designer items. It hardly puts them in the same category as millionaires who could purchase a whole store.

I like nice clothes and will admit to feeling down when I am restricted to shop in New Look and H and M. I frequented these shops as a teen! I would love to buy in Reiss, All Saints, Jigsaw, Jones Bootmaker, Kurt Geiger none of which are even designer but far better quality and more suited to women of my age group.

iamusuallybeingunreasonable · 06/01/2015 18:53

And you say they are friends?

Yanbu

EbwyIsUpTheDuff · 06/01/2015 19:56

I can't stand it when people judge others for any superficial reasons, be it clothes, hairstyle, weight. Surely it should be about who they are, not any of those things?

mrscumberbatch · 06/01/2015 19:59

They're idiots.

I despise primark but only because I can't 'see' anything. I get overwhelmed by it and can't find anything at all.

Whereas my sister can pick out an outfit from there and look a million dollars.

Clothes are clothes. Wear what you like. Who gives a shite what everyone else is wearing?

Sparklingbrook · 06/01/2015 20:08

I couldn't spot a 'designer' anything, or know whether it was 'this season' or three years ago. I couldn't tell you what brands/labels the DS's friends wear. i will try and take more notice.

If anyone is wearing ££ stuff to impress me they are wasting their time as I really can't tell.

TheFairyCaravan · 06/01/2015 20:17

What Sparkling said, and don't start with handbags I couldn't tell the difference between Primarni or Mulberry.

My kids like labels, I think they're mad, DS1 thinks nothing of spending £80-£100 on a shirt! He's young and has no outgoings so he can, for now.

Sparklingbrook · 06/01/2015 20:29

I was at a child's birthday party. the children were about 5. I sat next to a Mum who had an orange face was very glam.
A child threw up right next to her handbag, and it turned out it was an '£180 handbag' and she was absolutely horrified. It was hideous and if she had said it was Primarni I would have been less shocked.

BrightestAndBest · 06/01/2015 20:41

DD (10) and DS (8) happily exist in Primark clothes. As do most of their friends. Just as well - their school uniform costs a bomb (they are both at private schools).

I have a mixture of stuff. I will spend quite a bit on smart clothes for work. But equally I slob around in cheap stuff at the weekend.

TheIronGnome · 06/01/2015 20:46

I'm all high Street but have a mix of stuff! I like more higher end stuff for a few bits and pieces and then more 'bog standard' for most of it. My fave outfit at the moment is clarks ankle boots, gap jeans, warehouse top, gap Cardigan, next coat and mint velvet scarf!

Bought a beautiful Karen millen top the other week, WAG clothes? Really?!

It's not normally the clothes people wear, but the attitude they have. I love fancier clothes but budget doesn't allow. I like the uniqueness of design and the quality of the fabrics as well as the attention to detail like fancy linings etc.

Totally loving my Next coat this winter, I've been wearing it with everything!

TheIronGnome · 06/01/2015 20:48

I would LOVE a mulberry bag, doubt I'll ever have one though. H&M do amazing children's clothes, especially for boys. Really good prices too. And supermarkets often do great clothes for children and adults. Not keen on their baby stuff though.

Petradreaming · 06/01/2015 20:53

Daft people. Ignore them. People who are truly wealthy look after their money....bill gates flys economy....steve jobs wore simple turtlenecks.... folk that do the 'only designer; only the best' tend to be very insecure.... I used to be one of them... :-)

revealall · 06/01/2015 20:54

TBH there area so many clothes out there that judging you buy how much you've paid ,makes you look a complete cock.
Nothing wring with high end but since you can buy designer or expensive clothes from sales, outlets, ebay,TKMAXX charity shops etc for a fraction of a normal shop price, money doesn't come into it anymore.

ephemeralfairy · 06/01/2015 20:54

I always think that a truly stylish person is someone who can put together a really banging outfit from high-street and charity shop clothes, rather than someone who has gone into an high-end shop and just bought what's on the mannequin.

LetticeKnollys · 06/01/2015 21:22

Of course YANBU.

I thought NEXT kids stuff was expensive. Blush
