i'm itching to know why many mn's slag off the daily mail, what is their choice of paper to read, and why, just curious, considering some of the others on sale.

What are you on about, Fanjo. Who cares? I like to have my morning coffee and see what Eddie Redmayne was doing at last night's film premiere. It's ENTERTAINMENT. You're an idiot if you read any of the articles that refer to any subject meriting gravitas.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 05/01/2015 23:46

Who cares?I care.

Sometimes thinking beyond the shallow is good.

iamtheeggman · 05/01/2015 23:47

Similar vein to Stephen Lawrence, but they are surprisingly very critical of The Rapist Ched Evans.

lem73 · 05/01/2015 23:47

It really makes me laugh when people on MN post links from the DM then apologise for it.
Personally I like to buy it on a Thursday for the Femail pages but these woman who make a living writing about their families (ie Shona Sibary) astound me.

LeftyLoony · 05/01/2015 23:48

You can read that without the side order of slut shaming though.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 05/01/2015 23:48

Carry on having your exciting frothy celeb fix though.

LeftyLoony · 05/01/2015 23:48

This wonderful rag gave us Liz Jones and Samantha Brick.
Nuff said.

LoisWilkerson15 · 05/01/2015 23:50

I read the i paper op. I don't read the DM because they hate working / lower middle class, liberal arty farty lefties like me. They liked me when I was a sahm though! Now I am a wohm its back to sheer hatred!

AWholeLottaNosy · 05/01/2015 23:52

I used to teach a course about racism and one of the exercises was to look at articles in newspapers to examine how they perpetuated stereotypes of different groups. I always asked one of my colleagues ( an ex police officer) , to bring in his copies of the DM as they had the most extreme examples of this, especially anti Muslim stories. The drip feed effect of these kinds of stories is virulent and pernicious IMO...

AWholeLottaNosy · 05/01/2015 23:54

Also if you want to know why the DM is vile, just read the comments underneath the articles, that will tell you everything you need to know about the bigoted, hatefilled twats that read this shit.

magimedi · 05/01/2015 23:57

Mysogynistic, racist, homphobic................ need I say more?

Patrickstarxx · 06/01/2015 00:00

I like to read the comments Grin

Balloonspaghetti · 06/01/2015 00:06

I'm oddly in a love/hate relationship with it.

It's like an accident, or a fight, you know you shouldn't look, your ashamed that you do, but you really want to know what the drama is about...

I know it fuels heaps of my OCD/anxiety/depression fears and yet still check the app for comments - more fool me

Amethyst24 · 06/01/2015 00:11

All the above, and that they post deliberately upsetting stories about animals with horrible pictures for clickbait.

PhaedraIsMyName · 06/01/2015 00:17

smellyfishhead sorry but have always thought Amanda Palmer's estimation of her talent and wit far exceeds its reality.

The Mail is such an easy target, especially when you know you are performing in front of an audience who will be 100% in agreement with you (or even if they aren't are going to pretend to be)

LikeABadSethRogenMovie · 06/01/2015 00:24

Patricks me too! The frothier the better!

I personally think it's good to read a whole host of different news sources and make up your own mind. This includes reading the opinions of others that you don't agree with. It gives you a far bigger sense of what the world is like and huge the difference can be in opinion.

The most brainwashing I see in rl and on here seems to come from The Guardian tbh.

LikeABadSethRogenMovie · 06/01/2015 00:25

*how huge the difference

BOFster · 06/01/2015 00:38

This is a great article I remember from the time of the Olympics opening ceremony which criticises the Daily Mail's coverage. You have to look up a few gaps, because the Mail backtracked a bit, but I read their coverage at the time, and it was HIDEOUS.

TooOldForGlitter · 06/01/2015 00:39

I don't read this filthy rag because it is filthily misogynistic. The sidebar of shame makes me cringe. Page 4 will be slutty teen pregnancy, ooh look at these filthy slags...Page 4 of sidebar will be some celebs 13 yo daughter "displaying her curves/pins/figure". Vomit inducing.

ZingTheGreat · 06/01/2015 00:40

i saw an item in Lakeland catalogue today. next to it an arrow and little note saying "as advertised in Daily Mail"

made me smile thinking "not vipers-approved then!" Grin Grin Grin

TooOldForGlitter · 06/01/2015 00:41

Not to mention all those nob stealing filthy Romanians.

TooOldForGlitter · 06/01/2015 00:43

Oh crikey, job stealing...not nob. Although I bet they are after all that prime British nob as well the scrounging gits.

BOFster · 06/01/2015 00:46

Also, take a look at this piece which shows the vomtastic and creepy reporting of their showbiz pages when it comes to adolescent celebrities (female, obviously). As you'll see again, they are quick to remove their odious online content when the realise they've gone Too Far. Just ewwww.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 06/01/2015 00:49

People who say they love reading the comments are just lucky enough to not be personally affected by the comments or a targeted group. I prefer not to enjoy bile directed at others and do believe the maxim there but for the grace of God go I

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 06/01/2015 00:52

Very interesting articles BoF. A good insight into why the Mail is not a "frothy bit of fun".
