i'm itching to know why many mn's slag off the daily mail, what is their choice of paper to read, and why, just curious, considering some of the others on sale.

It has a very negative approach to representing society. I grew up reading it as my parents had it delivered daily, but think it's got worse as being sensational generates hits, and therefore profit through advertising in the digital age.
With a red top, you know you're going to get page three and some scanty reporting in basic language. It's obvious what they are, but the DM is more subtle and insidious with its flaws.

TheBatteriesHaveRunOut · 05/01/2015 23:14

I think the red rags don't pretend to be something they're not. It's a bit like Eastenders or Corrie not pretending they're Shakespeare. Page 3 obv vile but tbh I've seen pictures in the DM of teenagers in bikinis captioned with similarly disgusting - though more colloquial - language.

The DM likes to think it's intelligent, decent and relevant, when actually it's what you'd find lining the inside of Jeremy Clarkson's arse. Which is where it belongs.

random npc, not everyone is recycling ideas but some are, for all its faults gruntfuttock has made an excellent point, regarding stephen lawerence, so if the paper has only ever done one good thing it must be that. any mother/family would be grateful for that support.

Nah I can't be arsed with broadsheets either. Too hard to hold.
Doesn't mean I resort to THAT though.
I tend to just browse online on my phone, selection of different titles. I google the news story of interest then read around it on various different news websites.

Means I can't read the Sun's take or the Times due to the paywall but I seriously don't think I'm missing much!

smellyfishead · 05/01/2015 23:17

haha I will share these gems with youGrin

Even a stopped clock is right twice a day! It hardly makes up for the horrible racism that it pumps out the rest of the time. This is the paper that said 'hurrah for the blackshirts!' In the 30s, and it's politics really haven't improved much since then.

I am a Guardian on Saturday reader but I recognise people have a right to read whatever they like. I quite like reading different newspapers as it helps me to read something I disagree with just in order to understand my own beliefs better. Even a dead fish swims with the tide and if you only read stuff you agree with you can get bigoted. (note, its not just the right wing folks who are bigoted, yeah I said it, wot!)

Personally I find it interesting to wonder what the family of celebrities and film stars look like. This is the sort of thing the Daily Mail covers well. Just cos I am nosy.

OscarWinningActress · 05/01/2015 23:22

I LOVE the Daily Mail. It's not a newspaper though, is it? More a frothy guilty pleasure, like HELLO or People magazine. You don't read it for news Grin.

Princessdeb · 05/01/2015 23:29

Apart from being a misogynistic rag and a disgrace to responsible journalism their health reporting is shocking. As a HCP I have often had to deal with the consequences of their irresponsible approach. The list of things they have said cause cancer is exhaustive and contrary. See the link below and work out what you can do/ be/ drink or eat that doesn't cause cancer.

This again? The Why do you all hate the Daily Mail thread comes round every few months like clockwork ... Hmm

Cos it's there ... Alright?

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 05/01/2015 23:32

One persons "frothy guilty pleasure" is another's extremely toxic hate spreading dangerous progaganda machine which should be shut down.

Only people lucky enough not to belong to one of the groups it spreads hate about could find it frothy and a pleasure, or those who are too stupid to see that it is spreading bile about them.

It said once that you just had to claim your child had ADHD and you could get a free BMW. Which is entirely incorrect. To use the motabiiity scheme your child would have to need 24 hour supervision to prevent extreme danger to self and have extreme mental impairment and even then you'd have to pay a hefty deposit to get a BMW and then pay large monthly payments. It then printed a tiny disclaimer on page 20 something the next day but the lies were out there.

"Frothy" my arse.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 05/01/2015 23:34

It prints utter lies about Muslims wanting to ban terms like blackboards and people suck it up and become Islamophobic. Frothy my arse.

LeftyLoony · 05/01/2015 23:35

Bingo, Fanjo.
Under such scheme, two children need 24 hour supervision.
I still can't get the car suitable for our needs 'for free'. We have to give over the entire mobility component and stump up £200 up front to get a vehicle that they can't just climb out of the window of (lockable electric windows).

LeftyLoony · 05/01/2015 23:35

'baa baa rainbow sheep' sang no nursery, ever

53Dragon · 05/01/2015 23:38

There are loads of papers that I dislike personally, but only one that I'd despise you if I saw you buy it! Wink

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 05/01/2015 23:39

And people who say they won't click a link don't do it to show off their lefty credentials but because the more clicks the Mail gets the more money it will make from advertising and the more of its toxic propaganda it will spue out.

53Dragon · 05/01/2015 23:40

Immigrants are taking all our jobs...
Immigrants are lazy scroungers...

Etc.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 05/01/2015 23:40

Despite this OP I believe at least half of MN these days are daily Mail readers, which is grim and probably behind all the myriad of fat shaming threads and benefit bashing ones.

53Dragon · 05/01/2015 23:40

Immigrants cause cancer...

53Dragon · 05/01/2015 23:41

Fat people cause cancer?

merrymouse · 05/01/2015 23:41

It's the weird female opinion pieces with loads of odd photos of the writer next to a sofa with her children that confuse me. How desperate can they be for money?

53Dragon · 05/01/2015 23:42

Oh and people who say they buy the Daily Mail 'for the sport'
