To be fair I was impressed with David Davis as well. He's not a man I've had much time for but I thought he was decent and honest in admitting that he'd changed his opinions on learning the facts of the case and he made it bleak that this rapist has no place in football.

I thought it was a good edition last night. JHB was a twat as she so often is, and showed that she actually had very little knowledge of the case and hadn't read the judgements. Maybe she got her information from the rapist Ched Evans' website? That would explain her stance and determination that she had read up on it. She needs to try to remember that one should really start at original sources... I too got the same impression of her underlying belief that many others here got.

Gordon Taylor has apologised for his utterly crass Hillsborough remarks.

Jux · 09/01/2015 08:50

Sensible Piece by Winter linked to ^^. I particularly liked this para

If Evans’s perception of the “mob” includes a Prime Minister, the leader of the opposition, a potential sports minister, a saintly athlete, a sensible Oldham fan, and a respected law enforcer then he is in even more denial than the public suspect. Law schools and colleges offering PR courses will surely stage Ched Evans seminars in the future, focusing on “how not to conduct a campaign for your client”, using all the myriad mistakes by Evans’s ‘people’.

Deux · 09/01/2015 09:36

That Independent article is excellent.

I know little about football but it seems to be populated by uneducated buffoons. I asked DH if anyone in football - players or officials - had had any kind of education. They just seem to be so thick and each time one of them tries to say something they just screw it up even more.

merrymouse · 09/01/2015 09:41

From bbc:

Taylor, who made his original comments in an interview with the BBC on Thursday, added on Friday: "Ched Evans is a totally different case, but he has the same belief of his innocence."

If that is the apology he is just making the same point again.

I'd ask politely that we refrain from tossing about comments about "special school" and people being thick. It's offensive. My ds1 attends a special school, and he is highly intelligent. He is disabled. There is a vast difference between disabled and thick.

Jessica85 · 09/01/2015 11:02

Jux, that's the scary part. There appears to be many people (men and women) who don't seem to get that it is possible to be too drunk to consent without being unconscious. They are wrong, and they need to be educated on the actual law.

ilovesooty · 09/01/2015 11:25

So now Steve Bruce says that there is in his opinion a doubt about the rape conviction and "Ched has a case"

So that's one premier league manager supporter in addition to Harry Rednap. Interestingly both are English. Now we just need to know who the third manager is who holds women in such contempt.

I suspect Bruce isn't too far away from being sacked by Hull anyway given their current form and I hope this hastens his dismissal.

Harry Redknapp knows how eccentric jurors can be. I was stunned when he was acquitted of tax evasion but I accept the jury must have got it right rather than falling in love with his cheeky chappy persona.

EveDallasRetd · 09/01/2015 11:45

Well I thought I couldn't be shocked any further by this case and the support that Evans is getting from the most unlikely places. But Jean Hatchet has been called a jihadist that wants to kill people by Allison Pearson (Telegraph) this morning.

In light of what is going on in France that must rank as one of the most inappropriate and idiotic insults yet.

Yeah I saw Steve Brookstein (I know, wwwhhhhoooooo?!) laying into jean Hatchet yesterday. He's got a a reputation as being a bit of a cunt anyway hasn't he?

That Allison Pearson comment is beyond the pale, what is wron with people?

Who is Allison Pearson btw, is she a columnist?

Willferrellisactuallykindahot · 09/01/2015 11:53

Although reading on, even Steve Brookstein told her the jihadist commen was too far.

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 09/01/2015 11:57

The world has tipped upside down over the last 24hrs - where women are calling campaigners against male violence "jihadists who want to kill people," and I'm nodding in agreement with Tory MPs (David Davis).

An unrepentant convicted rapist is being called the victim of a witchhunt, compared to Nelson Mandela and the Hillsborough victims.

The rape victim meanwhile, is in hiding, with a selection of new identities, and voiceless.

A political campaign, including petitions and pressure to sponsors- that has had the Prime Minister, Deputy, Leader of the opposition, Sports Minister, football fans, and many others, as well as feminist campaigners, speak up in support of it - is being called "mob rule."

The world has gone mad. I feel dizzy.

meditrina · 09/01/2015 12:04

From the excellent article by Henry Winters linked above:

"Try daring to include in that “mob rule” category the Greater Manchester Police and Crime Commissioner, Tony Lloyd, who surely spoke for the moral majority when he said: “All offenders have the right to rebuild their lives and make amends after they have served their sentence. But Ched Evans’s lack of remorse and failure to acknowledge his offence means it is simply inappropriate for him to be on a Greater Manchester football pitch week in and week out presenting himself as some kind of role model, especially to young people.” That is not the spittle-flecked outpouring of the mob; that is a considered appraisal from a professional crime-fighter with close-up experience of the grim tensions of modern life"

Yy Sabrina, this issue has really brought out the worst in our society. I'm so glad there are people who will carry on making the arguments, in the face of almost overwhelming rape apology and illinformed commentary.

merrymouse · 09/01/2015 12:30

I just love all these columnists (Pearson, woman on qt) who have been able to review the case for us and give their considered opinion that the appeal judge and the jury were wrong.

Whatever, gotta keep churning out those column inches. I suppose if somebody on the paper has already got dibs on the intelligent argument, what can you do?

AliceinWinterWonderland · 09/01/2015 12:32

Well, Katie Hopkins is in BB House, isn't she? Maybe they're all fighting over who is going to take over her title of Ms Nasty Female Journalist? Grin

Deux · 09/01/2015 12:36

My sincere apologies if anyone was offended by me referring, loosely, to those in the the football industry appearing to be thick.

However it is still my opinion.
