OAFC statement now up on the Guardian page. No mention of any threat of rape against OAFC staff or their families. It seems to have gone quiet on that front very quickly...

twitter.com/danroan/status/553227358455742464/photo/1

On the plus side, it seems that the decisive factor was the decision of sponsors to pull their support.

So, in short, WE WON.

meditrina · 08/01/2015 16:37

I don't think anyone is a 'winner' here.

The OAFC statement is very explicit that it was the sponsorship/financial issues that made their mind up. The reference to violent threats (without any mention of sexual violence) was in a separate part of the statement.

And House - this isn't just women's voices!

iamtheeggman · 08/01/2015 17:03

Can anyone understand why the Guardian are saying 'The club said the decision was made because of threats, and as to do so with incur “significant financial pressure”..'?

I can't get this from their statement at all?

LineRunner · 08/01/2015 17:05

There is no appeal.

Ffs.

TheOfficialPan · 08/01/2015 17:06

It's refreshing that so many male footie people have made their feelings known in support of ending violence to girls and women - bravo too to the Shadow Sports minister and the Zen Office spokesman - excatly what needed to have been said.

Jux · 08/01/2015 17:07

I'll pay 2 quid to do a bit of training on the astro but I'm not quite close enough Grin OK I panicked and I am very grateful to you all for your patience for what was clearly (though not to me) a ridiculous idea. Mind you, Massey could bankroll them....... Wink

merrymouse · 08/01/2015 17:09

According to the Guardian there were death threats.

We deplore and condemn the vile and abusive threats, some including death threats, which have been made to our fans, sponsors and staff whilst this process has been in the public domain

In the circumstances I think the police need to investigate.

BOFster · 08/01/2015 17:10

Yes, I saw Sky News saying the threats were "clearly" the decisive factor, yet have seen elsewhere that the police have asked the club about it and they replied it was some low level abuse on Twitter.

I do know that this abuse goes on far too often, but as yet I have only seen it from supporters of Ched Evans on Twitter, and directed at women tweeting in opposition to his signing.

I hope the police get to the bottom of it.

Tyzer85 · 08/01/2015 17:13

I'm glad that Oldham have seen sense but the rape threats need to be investigated. A staff member was told that a named relative would be raped if the deal went ahead.

PuffinsAreFictitious · 08/01/2015 17:14

The GMP have approached the club and asked about the threats, and were told that no threats had been made other than some low level Twitter abuse, according to a few journalists.

iamtheeggman · 08/01/2015 17:17

The statement is very odd, the more I read it, in fact. They say they were "always...prepared to withstand the barrage of abuse" and that deal did not go ahead because of financial pressure (from sponsors, one infers). So they are saying that they believe they were right, even if their sponsors disagreed? Hardly likely to endear the good people at Mecca, Verlin, Nandos etc?

Linerunner - "appeal procedure" is just about weasly-worded enough to be a reference to the CCRC process, but it is frustrating.

As the G points out, the expression of gratitude to fans etc "during this difficult period" is a bit odd, given that it was the board who put them all through this.

OAFC have received some very poor PR advice through this.

^It has been widely reported that Oldham Athletic will not be signing Ched Evans, which we can now confirm. The whole issue has divided opinion and the club has been put under unbearable pressure as a result.

Proceeding could have placed significant financial pressure on the club and continued to be a divisive influence. As a consequence the deal could not go ahead.

As a club we condemn all crime including rape and irrespective of any appeal procedure it was always the case that we were prepared to withstand the barrage of abuse that is evident within the country and on social media.

We deplore and condemn the vile and abusive threats, some including death threats, which have been made to our fans, sponsors and staff whilst this process has been in the public domain.

Finally, we would like to place on record our gratitude to all who have supported the club during this difficult period, including the club staff, who have retained their focus throughout and in addition to Ched and his team who have acted with professionalism at all times.

We understand Ched has released his own statement on his website.

The club will not be making any further statement on this matter.^

BeyondDoesBootcamp · 08/01/2015 17:20

Twitter threats count as real threats, if they were made in any form, they need investigating. Especially if there was a board members daughter specifically named and threatened with rape.

Sallyingforth · 08/01/2015 17:21

And House - this isn't just women's voices!

This isn't a men v women issue. It's decent people against rapists.

merrymouse · 08/01/2015 17:22

Well that isn't what they are saying on their website. In the light of current events it is either very tacky to imply that their decisions were influenced by death threats - or there were genuinely death threats and the perpetrators need to be identified and prosecuted.

merrymouse · 08/01/2015 17:23

(sorry - that was in response to PuffinsAreFictitious Thu 08-Jan-15 17:14:26)

LineRunner · 08/01/2015 17:27

These threats need to be identified. And the Police need to investigate and the CPS prosecute.

BOFster · 08/01/2015 17:28

So, does "We deplore and condemn the vile and abusive threats, some including death threats, which have been made to our fans, sponsors and staff whilst this process has been in the public domain" refer also to the threats made by Ched Evans' supporters?

It must do, surely? Because they have been everywhere. It's a bit disingenuous if that's the case, as I simply cannot believe that any threats from people who opposed the signing of a rapist would have been anywhere near as numerous, if they happened at all. It just doesn't make sense.

Do you think that some people have said stuff like "How would you like seeing CE signed it if it had happened to your daughter?" or something like that?

PuffinsAreFictitious · 08/01/2015 17:29

We deplore and condemn the vile and abusive threats, some including death threats, which have been made to our fans, sponsors and staff whilst this process has been in the public domain.

And yet, when the Police asked them about these threats, they said that none had been made, other than some low level Twitter abuse. Not Twitter threats.

I find it really odd that they have released this part of the statement after confirming with the Police that it didn't happen.

The only death threats that I have seen made have been ones directed at men and women who didn't support CE's move to Oldham. Including one I saw where a man's children were threatened.

If the club were economical with the truth to the Police earlier, I hope they have now decided to take their complaint to them, that it is fully investigated and the criminals brought to justice. It would be nice if that were to happen to the people who threatened people who didn't support his move, but apparently, only threats made to fans, staff and sponsors count, and they don't deplore the threats made by their fans to others.

Rebecca2014 · 08/01/2015 17:44

I was smiling when I read that Oldham decided not to offer Evans a contract.

This sexist article complaining about us feminist makes me even more happier that we have won. www.spectator.co.uk/columnists/rod-liddle/9410182/the-utterly-ludicrous-and-petty-campaign-against-ched-evans/

PuffinsAreFictitious · 08/01/2015 17:48

Rod Liddle is a wife beating nonentity.

YonicSleighdriver · 08/01/2015 17:51

The phrasing is broad enough to cover any kind of threats made during the last few days, whether they were to pro, anti or neutral parties.

All threats of violence are deplorable.

LineRunner · 08/01/2015 18:16

Rod Liddle has written several articles lamenting the demise of football as the people's game.

He forgot the bit about keeping rapists away from it.
