Emailed Verlin too.

At last an MP showing a bit of principle. It's not just the implications for football, or even sport generally, but implications for society as a whole.

clam · 07/01/2015 22:39

Good on herbsandhags.

I wonder if this 20% doubt is to do with the FA (or similar) bringing pressure to bear on the broader aspects of the decision then?

clam · 07/01/2015 22:40

And the petition is not far off 70,000 now. Not that it appears to matter to OA. They quite clearly couldn't give a fuck.

YonicSleighdriver · 07/01/2015 22:41

Jux, DC, NC and EM have all been unsupportive of CE being re-signed. Clive Efford has made a very articulate case though.

chantico · 07/01/2015 22:44

Who is the Minister for Sport?

Is there a proper epetition asking Parliament to debate precisely the issues in Efford's letter?

Sallyingforth · 07/01/2015 22:44

Corney told the Jewish Chronicle: ''We believe he has served his time."

How many more fucking prats believe that rubbish?

flyingmonks · 07/01/2015 22:51

Chantico I had the same thought and have asked Helen Grant - Minister for Sport - where is her protest? Clive Efford is showing her up.

Very well-considered statement from Zen Office

*ZenOffice have always believed that in order to be a successful business we need to give something back to the community.

We have strong background in supporting local, community, family based initiatives in the North West.

ZenOffice have been sponsors of Oldham Athletic Football Club for five years. This partnership has been based on mutual respect as OAFC did share the same values as ZenOffice, based on family and community.

ZenOffice do not agree that the current path OAFC are embarking on espouses these values.

Therefore it is with much regret, that ZenOffice would like to confirm that we will end our association with Oldham Athletic Football Club if the move goes ahead to sign Ched Evans.*

Am trying to get an email contact for them but the website page won't load

If there is no legal bar to him working again, as long as he can find someone to employ him, then is there anything that these heavyweights, like the FA and MPs, can do, realistically?

And in the absence of any such bar, then I suppose a club such as OA is entitled, if mis-guided to put it mildly, to give him a job. However, we are also entitled to express our views on the subject, either by signing petitions, or withdrawing our custom to companies who choose still to endorse the club and its decision. Not sure it's enough to change anything though.

you can tweet them. Their website seems to be offline.

YonicSleighdriver · 07/01/2015 23:07

Clam, I think the FA could change policy to not allow players with serious convictions to be registered with then. I assume registration is a pre condition of playing under their auspices...

PuffinsAreFictitious · 07/01/2015 23:10

The FA states that people with sexual convictions are not fit persons to run or own a football club, so it must be possible to extend that to players?

Personally, I would like to see the FA take some sort of leadership on this, and seek to rid the sport of all players with serious criminal convictions.

YonicSleighdriver · 07/01/2015 23:11

MPs can't do anything though.

Seriously, if the FA already had a policy that "no registered player can be on the sex offenders' register" or something, I doubt anyone would've batted an eyelid at that being introduced. Now of course it would be covered in the press.

TheOfficialPan · 07/01/2015 23:12

The FA have a code of conduct. I've just googled it and in the section for Adult Players (all FA registered players need to sign up to it by dint of registrtation) a condition is:
"Never engage in offensive, insulting or abusive language or behaviour

It doesn't specify where this may take place. Maybe Clive Efford refers to this, or could be doing?

timtam23 · 07/01/2015 23:24

Found it!

[email protected]

Sorry can't get it as a "mail to" link

lalalonglegs · 07/01/2015 23:24

My husband is a senior sports journalist and has told me that Rapist Ched Evans's father-in-law, Karl Massey, who is also behind the disgraceful victim-hounding website, offered to compensate Oldham fully were they to lose any sponsorship over this. No doubt that's what was behind the "We're signing him, oooh, maybe not, yes, we are again now" fiasco. Hmm

timtam23 · 07/01/2015 23:33

I don't do Twitter but have emailed Clive Efford, ZenOffice & Verlin to say thank you
Might do Nandos as well but it seems a bit more combative over there on their Facebook page Sad

BOFster · 07/01/2015 23:39

Karl Massey owns the famous-up-north diamond store Prestons Of Bolton, btw. If anyone was thinking of giving them custom for engagement rings or whatever, you might consider giving them a swerve.

PuffinsAreFictitious · 07/01/2015 23:42

lalalonglegs..

Your DH is correct. He's also put £2 million pounds on the table to mitigate lost sponsorship money and pay his pet rapist's wages. Ched Evans is a complete and utter turd, but, by all accounts, getting on the wrong side of Karl Massey is dangerous stuff.

Looks like they deserve each other.

clam · 07/01/2015 23:44

It's not just about the monetary loss though is it? There's got to be a loss of face for the club if more and more companies ditch them, making their reasons publicly known.

TheOfficialPan · 07/01/2015 23:45

I'm sure there's been an opera written centuries ago about this CE/KM thing. Just can't recall which it was....

clam · 07/01/2015 23:46

So puffins, that begs the question, what on earth does one have to be to get on the wrong side of Karl Massey? I mean, if cheating on his daughter clearly doesn't qualify?

VikingVolva · 07/01/2015 23:46

The Attourney General's office confirmed yesterday that it was investigating the website to see if it was a contempt of court and expected to announce its conclusions soon. The BBC article about it said that AG could order the site be taken down and could launch criminal prosecutions. They said an announcement soon. I wonder how far away 'soon' might be, and if that could be relevant to the timelines of a Massey funded deal?

Ohfourfoxache · 07/01/2015 23:47

Looks like the sponsors who are prepared to dump OAFC are actually going to do far better than those who decide to stick by them.....
