Actually I don't believe I am being unreasonable. But wanted to bring it to attention.

MN seems to be a quiet on this today but I think the fight should still go on. I can't link to it as I am so not tech savvy enough but it is on change.org. (Same person whk set up the Sheffield Weds one so of you sogned that one it is pretty easy to locate).Already has over 9000 signatures so please please please continue to sign and share!

According to reports, the OA manager doesn't want to sign CE but the owner/sponsor Sports Direct are wishing the deal done and pushed through. The manager Lee Johnson will be fronting the press conference tomorrow. The owner of Sports Direct is Mike Ashley, who also owns Newcastle United and is a multi-millionaire. (and by all accounts I know of is a rather unpleasant man).

Its quite possible he could fund Oldhams corporate losses to make a point about supporting Evans, even if the club itself goes under.
Pessimistic.

TheMD · 04/01/2015 23:52

Signed.

Paddleslowly · 04/01/2015 23:53

I am so glad that DS is not a football fan. To think that this vile little shit could recieve hand clapping and cheering when running out onto a football field makes me sick. He is not hero he is someone that has violated another human being in the wrost possible way.Made her feel dirty and ashamed of herself from his perverted, arrogant wrong doing.
His lack of remorse should be his shame aswell as his convicted crime. His silly little girlfriend is blinded but may come to learn in time that her love for him is misguided. Maybe you could stand by your man if he broke down and cried that what he had done was wrong. But no he hasn't instead he is still an abuser because he has filled his gf head with his story to suit him and what she wants to hear.
I FUCKING HATE RAPISTS. And will gladly sign the petition. My thoughts go to the victim and her family.

WellWhoKnew · 04/01/2015 23:55

Done.

I agree he has a right to work, it's impossible to argue he doesn't. But most professionals, if they were a convicted of a crime, would be forced to return their licence, be disbarred or de-registered (think doctors, lawyers, teachers). The right to work in their chosen job no matter how talented or proficient they are, is nonetheless forbidden. I don't agree that he has a right to work in a job that requires him to represent his sport or "towns". Sport has a code of conduct just like all professions and a few footballers forget that, just like other professionals do sometimes let their profession down. Employing a convicted rapist would be the most damaging thing this sport could do for itself. It took years to try to get English Football to lose/calm its violent/hooligan-led reputation. Let's not allow it to be defined by rewarding sexual predators.

ASAS · 05/01/2015 00:04

The rapist Ched Evans probably truly believes he is innocent. It scares me to think it's highly unlikely the woman he was convicted of raping was his first and only victim.

Mike Ashley is hated in Glasgow, a great feat as this has united the old firm. Men and money. I despair.

VikingVolva · 05/01/2015 00:06

Pan what have you seen about Mike Ashley's role in any of this?

Icimoi · 05/01/2015 00:08

OK, if Sports Direct are pushing this, we need everyone to email them and let them know there will be a mass boycott of their shops. We also need direct tweets and posts on their Facebook page, if they have one. I can' think direct - can anyone else?

Icimoi · 05/01/2015 00:09

That should have been can't link direct. I hate the way predictive text can't cope with apostrophes

VikingVolva · 05/01/2015 00:11

"Mike Ashley is hated in Glasgow"

He's not exactly loved on Tyneside either.

clam · 05/01/2015 00:11

I just tweeted them and straightaway got a tweet back from some arsebloke (not from SD though) saying it was quite right that they would be sponsoring OA after this. Angry

SouthernComforts · 05/01/2015 00:13

I don't know if this has been mentioned already but Paul Scholes is a big latics fan and still takes his children to watch games (or so I'm told) if he has Twitter maybe someone could tweet him a link to this thread/the petition?

ihavenonameonhere · 05/01/2015 00:17

Footballers won't get involved in afraid even nice guy Like Scholes. Neither will SD who I am sure will have been consulted. It's the secondary sponsors such as car dealerships we want to hit.

Trust me, I worked in football for 5 years

SouthernComforts · 05/01/2015 00:29

You're probably right. To me and a lot of other people PS is a legend and would have a huge sway if he were to show his support either way on this tbh, I can see why he'd keep out of it.

TheOfficialPan · 05/01/2015 00:32

Viking - I haven't seen anything specifically about MA having a direct role in this BUT..this deal will have been worked on since at least the day OA denied reports they were going to be involved with CE. Since then they have lost all their games and scored only one goal. MA in effect currently bank-rolls Oldham, and a move like this can only have been done with his agreement, and in 'support' of the Chairman of the club who doesn't think he raped his victim, hence supporting CE. Sports Direct was named recently as a major user of zero-hours contracts for their employees. He's got form for being ruthless.

YonicSleighdriver · 05/01/2015 00:32

That's a real shame if true, Pan.

YonicSleighdriver · 05/01/2015 00:44

Looks like it is a single season contract giving them wriggle room
www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/oldham-athletic/11324641/Ched-Evans-warned-to-expect-backlash-as-Oldham-move-nears-completion.html

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 05/01/2015 00:45

Who was it that swung it for Sheffield? In vague time order, I can think of the petition, Charlie Webster, Jessica Ennis, the bloke from the Housemartins, I've probably forgotten some - as their patrons started to stand down, and famous sports stars started to ask for their name to be taken off the stands, they took notice.

YonicSleighdriver · 05/01/2015 00:47

Oh god, Gordon Taylor is also wrong about "served his time "

Taylor added on BBC Radio 5 Live: “We’ve made it clear in our statements that we feel he’s been unable to say much because of the appeals process, but he has served his time and the job of society is to look to rehabilitate.”

elfycat · 05/01/2015 00:50

He hasn't served his time, he's said quite enough, and he's not rehabilitated by any definition I can think of.

Honestly, there's still plenty of room on my brick wall for more heads.

TheOfficialPan · 05/01/2015 00:51

Head.Wall. Repeat.

ILoveOnionRings · 05/01/2015 01:03

I am sure I just heard on rAdio 5 news they are not signing him now and will release a statement later on today. Can anyone confirm?

ILoveOnionRings · 05/01/2015 01:05

*Radio 5 Live

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 05/01/2015 01:11

Is he really that good a striker??

I know (only from this story, mind) that Oldham are in a spot of bother - but no good can come of signing him now, can it? The publicity is just too negative.

YonicSleighdriver · 05/01/2015 01:14

Yy sabrinA. I assume he will accept low pay and a short term contract just to get back on though.

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 05/01/2015 01:18

Signed the one against Sheffield United.

Signed the one against being allowed to go abroad to play for, I think Malta.

Signed the one against Oldham.

Can't believe it needs repeating but ... Ched Evans was prosecuted and convicted because of his own statement.

There is no possibility of rehabilitation unless and until he recognises that he was wrong, and shows remorse for his actions.

And stops people hounding his victim.

If it wasn't so diabolical it would be funny that people can't see this.

elfycat I think we might need another wall.
